An Encounter With a Black Widow Spider | The New York Times 

While I was moving some old flower pots one time, I felt something crawling on my hand. I lifted my hand and saw a black widow. So I slowly laid my hand down on the ground, and she crawled off my hand and went on her way. Then I went inside and changed my underwear.

I have a black widow that I’ve come to consider my pet and she’s very docile. She would rather play dead and roll into a ball then be aggressive.

Spiders only bite as a last resort or if they're feeling crushed. Spiders typically go for dark places as soon as you get light on them.

My nextdoor neighbor who was a 65 year old man died from a Widow bite last year. They can absolutely be deadly to the elderly and are even more dangerous to young children.

There’s a park near my house with a huge pile of rocks, and TONS of black widow nests. I love to go and take pictures.

Look out for them in fresh produce, like grapes. I found a brown widow in my grapes. (she is now our pet) In the past year there were about 3 or more reports here in the US of people finding black widows in their grapes as well.

the males are smaller than the female, the female will only bite from being attacked, their hearts are in the bulbous region. The main reason why they approach crickets and grasshoppers or other predators backwards is to attaching web to entangle their opponents from kicking a hole in the tail and killing them. I currently have one and it hatched eggs overnight. I need to find a better place for the slings (babies). 🕷

I live in VA and last summer there was a Black Widow on the underside of a folding chair in the backyard and I was told that this encounter was the result of having a strawberry patch.

If you live in the south, even in a large city, you can find Black Widow Spiders any day of the week. Just look under porches, piles of wood, under the rim of trash cans, under window sills, etc. Basically any place in the shade where she can hide and be undisturbed. Just yesterday morning, I was emptying a trash can full of grass cuttings onto my compost heap and noticed three rather large egg-sacks under the cans' rim, a closer look, and there was a huge Black widow nearby. I collected the spider and her egg sacks and relocated them to one of the vent holes at the crawl space in a corner of the house. When i went back in the evening, she had re-attached the egg-sacks and spun a small web to hide in. There was already a grasshopper wrapped up for her next meal. My neighbor was appalled that I did not kill it. Since I don't use any bug sprays, I need all the help I can get. I can never understand how people who live in Florida are so squeamish about insects, arachnids, snakes, and yes, even lizards and frogs/toads. I am glad to have all of these in my yard. If they are healthy and thriving, then I know the food I grow is just as good.

well, that answered my question. I live in south jersey very near cape may. after moving here almost 20 ears ago I really didn't think too much about spiders until three years ago when I saw a black widow after turning over an old landscaping 6x6.since then I have seen more that 8 or 9 in the last 3 years. should this be a concern to me and what if anything can I do to make my yard and garden less black widow friendly????

There are black & brown widows all over the greenhouse I work at in coastal Alabama. I just l turned over plastic pot and a very pretty black widow is in its web. I always wear thick gloves when touching any plastic containers or moving anything. When people come to work I have a plastic tray on top of a trash can which houses a brown widow. This is the model spider I show them because many have never seen a widow spider, let alone a brown widow. I show them that the brown widow has a spiky egg which is the difference from the black widow and a positive ID. At first I killed them all and was scared of them. I've never found them to be aggressive however they are dangerous and to much of a risk so sometimes wipe them out. I'm concerned my dogs will mess with them like they do with all bugs and get bitten too.

It looks like The Australian Red Back Spider to me at 0:54 (seconds), which is a very close relative of The Black Widow.

Once I went to a camp and we were being dumb with mattresses and jumping on people under the mattresses and I was the under one of the mattresses and I actually thanked this dude because he jump on me the moment the spider tried to get on to me because I was moving a lot it's pretty obvious that it wanted to bite me so I saw it moving and I threw the mattress of of me and another kid jumped on the mattress I was on landing on the spider killing it we then got the staff to tell us what type of spider it was and it turned out to be a black widow and then he tried to keep us from leaving the camp by telling us it can't kill you.

If it has a stripe on the back, red, it is not a black widow, red back, not native to usa, australia spider. Usa has no red stripe, just the hourglass on ventral side.
