Portia is the name of a jumping spider in a book called "Children of Time" by Adrian Tchaikovsky, it was the winner of the Arthur C Clarke Award for science fiction book of the year in 2015. It's a great book and Portia is awesome in it :)

I had a jumping spider who adopted me in Arkansas. He was about 1.5 inches across with a black and white checkered body with blue turquois eyes - (they weren't really eyes, because he had 8 others, in addition. I put him in the yard, and 2 days later he was back in my living room. They I put him in the back yard, and 2 days later he was back in my living room. So I told him, "you can stay here, just watch out for the cat". So he did, he lived with us for 3 years till I moved. Every once in a while I would say, "I wonder where the spider is?" and he would pop out and show me. Very quiet and well-behaved houseguest! LOL I will never forget him.

There’s a cute cartoon series on RU-vid about a little spider named Lucas, who was created specifically to help people overcome fear of spiders because he’s so adorable and sweet. Another thing that helped, for me, was to befriend an orb weaver spider that set up a huge web on my back porch. I named her and tossed crickets into her web. And I was sad when she passed away as winter approached.

We have 2 types of jumping spider in our garden and they really do have amazing eyesight. You can make movement 90 degrees to their front, and they always spin round to look at what made the movement. Then they'll either come and investigate, or they run off a short distance, then spin around to see where you are now or if you are still where they left you. 1 type of spider is small and has little compact legs, and the other type has longer legs except for their front legs which are extra long. I later found out that only the males have the longer front legs as they use them to do a dance and tap out a rhythm to entice a female to mate. I used to be heavily arachnophobic, but little guys like these with little attitudes have dulled the fear a bit. If a large spider is on me though, a spontaneous slap dance might still occur. Accompanied by little girl screams from a 50 year old man

@ Insects will walkover anything to find food themselves, obviously that's how thy hunt in the wild. Go out into nature, if you sit still enough for long enough, nature will happen around you. Sitting in a forest, birds and insects casually passing by, sitting in rockpools and small fish swim over your feet/leg/hands. The lights won't be close to the ground, there are plenty of wildlife photographers/cinematographers that would find an ideal spot that has activity, set up their gear, camouflage if needed, point their camera and wait. But lets jut discredit them by claiming it's all faked eh? After-all, if a few are staged then that means most are, as you claim. It is a very very low percentage, if being done probably meant thy ran out of time or were unsuccessful with the in-location shots.

Sir David Attenborough is a global treasure and he should be treated as such. I feel like they do such a better job with the narration, the script, the sound effects and music, the timing of said music, and the absolutely perfect camera angles than any other nature documentary out there today. @@Cecilia-ky3uw But the theory of evolution would dictate that over time all animals and plants adapt to their environment based off of coping with predators, prey, environmental obstacles, ect. So you can say they dont use math or evolve by learning from other animals however that ideal is simply false. Not only have they learned from Hundreds if not thousands of species they have encountered over time, those that build homes show a natural talent in engineering and structural integrity. A spider can make a web able to trap creatures many times its weight. A group of beavers can stop a raging river. A group of killer whales can work in tandem while using sonar to map the environmental data in their head and instantly process how to respond to it. None of these are small feats, and though mankind can easily beat most of these achievements, the reality is it's a small number of people who accomplish these feats. Most in the modern era have trouble with basic survival is my point and I stand by it. Have a nice night though ^_^

There was a spider - not sure of the type - very small - used to be in a crack in the wall at my work. And every day at about 3:00 he would come running out, run all around in weaving, circling patterns and then return to his crack in the wall. Not a hairy type, small as the "a" on my little phone keyboard, and the legs were about as long as a comma, and all around his body, like a little star pattern. Very strange little thing.
