It is with immense pleasure that Sciences Po and CEVIPOF welcomes Michael Sandel, world-renowned Professor of Political Philosophy at Harvard University, to discuss his book The Tyranny of Merit: What's Become of the Common Good? (La tyrannie du mérite, Albin Michel)
Following the enormous success of Justice: What’s the Right Thing To Do? (2017) Professor Sandel now explores the central question of our time: What’s become of the common good? He argues that in order to overcome the various crises that are currently upending our world, we must rethink attitudes toward both success and failure that have accompanied globalization and rising inequality.

On the contrary, I'd argue that meritocracy (If it's done right) is the only way we can have common good. Try imagining a society where people without merit run everything from schools and hospitals to the government or one where the lazy are judged equal to the industrious. It's not the idea that needs to be changed, It's how we implement it; like the professor said, we don't live up to it.

Na but also meritocracy is something that takes much longer than a single generation. We have to stop thinking only about ourselves. You fight for your children, not just yourself. In short, too many people love to complain. Life is hard, but it's even harder when all you do is complain.
