An English country house. 

In the 1940s there was a youth hostel on part of the Castle Carr Estate, it was run by my Grandparents. When the owner died in 1949 they tried to Auction the Castle off to pay death duties. It didn't sell but most of the other farms did, my Grandparents bought there Farm, my Mum was brought up there and they lived there until 1990. We have loads of information about The Castle, and I've collected alot of photos of the place over the years, I'm happy to share them if anyone's interested.

There's a much less arduouse route to Castle Carr. I walk there every year, when a local charity walk sets off from the nearby 'Cat I T'hwell' pub. That's the walk where the fountains are raised by Yorkshire Water, to release pressure in the system. A spectacular event and a great day out, ending up back at the pub.

Martin you guys go to so much trouble to bring us worldclass adventure content, I just want to say a very heartfelt thank you. One day you guys are going to be famous. Love to James, his smile is gorgeous.

With all the demolition in the 50s, 60s and 70s, it is a wonder that anything is still left standing, today, in Britain.

enjoyed the video. We first came across Castle Carr in the early '60s as young teenagers, when exploring the moors around Halifax. Looked down on it on a dark afternoon. saw figures on the battlements ( turned out to be statues!!) Went back on our bikes later just as demolition had started and crept in! There was a large baronial hall with statues of knights in armour. Behind one was a 'secret' passage, a section of wall with an iron door made to look like stone leading to steps down to the outside. Explored the cellars and part upstairs which was in a bad state. Were we the "ghosts" that the workmen heard. I remember reading the report in the local paper. Many thanks for what you do, as we did in the '60s , old mines, brick works and any holes in the ground,but we did not have fancy cameras ( and could not afford them!), just memories.

That arched ceiling inside you saw at the end was absolutely covered in bats. I have been in there before at dusk and they had just started waking up!

In the picture with all the cars there can be seen what looks like a Bedford CA van, these were introduced from 1952 and made until 1969 so that should give an indication of the time. Great interesting video Martin, thanks again.

Another Fantastic video ! The engineer, John Fredrick La Trobe Batemen, was the engineer responsible for much of the Victorian water infrastucture of the North. He was the consultant engineer to the Manchaester Corporation Water Works an also designed the Longdendale Reservoirs and aqueduct to East Manachester (Denton) and my favourite the Thirlmere Reservoir and Aqueduct. There is a commerative fountain in Albert Square celebrating this monumantal acheivement .

Another brilliant film. Another hidden gem. And wasn't this hidden! I've often thought in this country you are never too far from civilisation, but that place really was in there middle of nowhere. What a story, love the history. I wonder who owns it now?

So, recently when I think that I've seen your most interesting adventure, you present a new one that becomes my favorite! I really enjoyed this one and at first I was wishing that it wasn't so close to the end of the day, but then I really felt the diminishing light added to the atmosphere. Such incredible water works seemingly in the middle of nowhere! And I've now started saying, "let's crack on," so far only to myself. Not something we say in Massachusetts but it's become my favorite! Thanks for all your fascinating adventures. 🌞

Stunning. wish they had of left the castle alone. As a school kid I did the calderdale way. Would of passed thru around here somewhere. Yorkshire is a beautiful place!

I stumbled across Castle Carr about 8 years ago whilst walking that area, i knew i was sort of trespassing to get to it but i was so intrigued by it i continued, i remember getting a feeling of being watched all the time but there wasn't anyone around, it's like an abandoned movie set, such a weird place but beautiful

Beautiful but tragic place! Water garden's were amazing! They couldn't sell it, or probably afford to pay the taxes on it, so they pulled it down! Little regard back then to save something so nice! Great to see Connor out with you again too! Thanks Martin!

The thing that always amazes me with these places, is the pre-planning to design all those by - waters and culverts etc. to manage the fountains,waterfalls and cascades. Another great vid. glad you all made it out o.k. Thanks for taking us on yet another adventure to somewhere we would never go to, but we have now seen a bit before its lost forever. I have enjoyed all the "LOST" factories, workshops, industrial sites, tunnels and generally places i could never get to.

I must admitt what a marvelous piece of engineering in reference to those water gardens. At first i thought those gardens were constucted in the 1890's. i really enjoyedn this video

Fantastic video martin by eck you took the long way round there is a rd thats within 5 minutes walk of the castle it is now a pheasant shoot hence all the blue barrels you saw and sadly yes it is private ground and on the maps as so did u manage to see the water towers above the castle well worth a day out when they turn the fountains on

Great video and story Martin, nice that you made it back to Yorkshire. Navigation on those moors is an artform particularly when the mist comes down, and yes I've made a right pig's ear of it over the years!

A fascinating place :) It is truly a shame (and truly stupid) that the house was pulled down! I'm glad the water gardens remain. It is wonderful that the person chose to create something lasting and beautiful with the money that they were given. That doesn't happen much these days :(

It's easy to see how legends grew up around those peat bogs - really scary places. Glad you went back a different way.

I am so glad to be able to enjoy your work about a place that has captured my heart. It is not just the upper crust that have value,I love the history of factories and working class. Somehow remnants of these places,the mansions too,keep us respectful of those who worked hard before us. I sincerely hope once things are I hope fairly normal to finally be on the ground in Manchester seeing two things I love. Manchester has kind of adopted me in a way I am grateful for,sure one can find flashy places,but to me this city and region are good people. Survivors Manchester brought me back from hell,and your videos allow me a connection to the city I love. And yes ,the offer of pints on me has no expiration! You always smash it mate!! When I finally can travel,I shall definitely let you know ,and before landing in Manchester shall be sure to set up a meet. If we get to explore,not too many spiders! Lol

What a wonderful place - truly a 'hidden gem', sadly through sheer ignorance, many ancient buildings were demolished in the 1950's and 1960's - a great shame !

Martin & Co. deserve more than 90k subscribers. Great job to find this place, it amazes me that in these times there are still so many derelict structures in GB. There may be a bit of fact about the place being haunted; I've heard of other abandoned places GB and America with the same situation, it's as if the previous deceased owners disliked anybody trying to vandalize their properties!

Watching this on a Monday morning with a cup of tea. I get to the bit with the fountains and water gardens and it was like being in the pub after five pints. And - Lo! - the peeing began. It was like Niagra Falls! This was an absolutely beautiful video - but it's the first one I've ever watched and thought I'd better rehydrate after it finished! Apart from that, it was a really great video - and I just want to echo the others who are commenting that your videos are getting better and better and better every time you post one. They're brilliant.

The Cat-th-Well pub at Wainstalls is decorated with some of the wood panelling from the Castle, which was purchased at the time of demolishing.

Those water gardens are stunning! You'd have thought that the could open them to the public all year round and make some money to help with the upkeep!

Imagine being so bitter about the low bidding price that you decide to demolish a building rather than trying again to sell it. I wonder if it was already listed as inhabitable before the auction. Perhaps they were only selling it for the land.
