The story of Tenzin Palmo, an Englishwoman, the daughter of a fishmonger from London's East End, who spent 12 years alone in a cave 13,000 feet up in the Himalayas and became a world-renowned spiritual leader and champion of the right of women to achieve spiritual enlightenment.
At the age of 18, she read a book on Buddhism and realised that this might fill a long-sensed void in her life. In 1963, at the age of 20, she went to India, where she eventually entered a monastery.
Being the only woman amongst hundreds of monks, she began her battle against the prejudice that has excluded women from enlightenment for thousands of years. In 1976 she secluded herself in a remote cave 13,000 feet up in the Himalayas, where she stayed for 12 years between the ages of 33 and 45.
In this mountain hideaway she faced unimaginable cold, wild animals, floods, snow and rockfalls, grew her own food and slept in a traditional wooden meditation box, three feet square - she never lay down. In 1988 she emerged from the cave with a determination to build a convent in northern India to revive the Togdenma lineage, a long-forgotten female spiritual elite.

I, for one, cannot wrap my mind around how a person who gives birth to man can be deemed lower than man. It makes absolutely no sense. The woman is the creative force and is necessary to continue this human experience. I deeply respect Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo for her life work. It is ushering in a much needed paradigm shift.

I am watching from Bhutan and I can say that Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo is the real deal. We have many male teachers nowadays who are very very materialistic with wives and children and mistresses and making lot of money and enjoying and living very worldly lives who never pratice and meditate even for a month . I would choose Someone like her who has actually meditated in a cave and practiced the theory as my teacher anyway from the many fake male teachers these days just doing it for the fame and money . Thank you for all that you have done for the Dharma Jetsunma and for speaking out against the discrimination of women and especially nuns in the Tibetan system . Thank you for standing up for women and our spiritual potential ❤️

Agree. Why are monks doing that? What i got from this film is that the monks "prevent" nuns from becoming Buddha and perhaps because of a Tibetan writing describing women as unclean. This treatment of text>extensive application of viewing all women ever born based on a man's written description of a woman has impeded humanity's development via exclusivity in more than one culture or country. Just Sad.

Last week I posted one of her video as I thought it would be inspirational and motivsting for those interested. However,yesterday I received notification, from FaceBook that the entire video had been taken down for 'Copyright' reasons. My conclusion is that Tenzin Palmo does not want to share her experiences unless she receives financial compensation for so doing. Such an attitude flies in the face of the Lord Buddha's Dhamma. What then has this woman learned in all her years spent as a Buddhist nun? Apparently very little if anything at all!

If you are a serious about spiritual practice you would choose to be reborn male. If you’re female you haven’t done the same amount of practice in past lives that a male has. @Maria Kelly Pure awareness is non-dualistic and transcends concepts such as male and female. If you are clinging to the concept of being female then you will never realise a state of liberation from the suffering created by your own inflated ego. This is one of the principle reasons why feminists are so unpleasant.

It’s like she has had to go through more hardships than Sakyamuni Buddha with there no end in sight as yet. All for the benefit of women as sentient beings. She is so humble and shares her doubts which shows how true and authentic she is as a human being. May SHE live beyond 108 ❤️💛💚

I’m 45 and I’m not sure why but lately I been thinking about learning to one day becoming a monk. I’m not sure what the criterias are, or if I’m too old to start.. but it’s something that I’m really really want to do for the rest of my life.. away from the superficial painful world.

I strongly advise anyone NOT to watch her video!. I am an English Buddhist monk who hosts a Facebook page devoted exclusively to promoting the Lord Buddha's Dhamma.

Great inspiration I too in search of such lineage. First I took refuge in iscone then suddenly one day went to Ramkrishna ashram on that day there was a function celebrating birthday of Ramkrishna i got blessing. I asked Swami jee show me the track on which I can attain the blessing. Few months after I got a book an autobiography of a yogi that book changed my life completely. I threw myself on the foot of guru paramhans yogananda since 2010 practicing kriya yoga. Several times I went in search for place for me in the himalaya though I trekked almost whole the himalaya. I went to sri Badrinath to sit in solitude but because myself married in hidu marriage I took oath to take care of my family. Myself turned back to home doing practice. Guru paramhans yogananda written married person practice at home. Ok let us see what happens next. This body is property of guru what hi gave us is best suits for us. Jai guru

I think Jetsun Palmo's words were taken out of context. Nagarjuna didn't say women are filthy and lower, it was the Nagarjuna who gave advice to those men who can not control their sexual desire and that becomes a great obstacle for spiritual growth. to those students, he said look at the beautiful woman you find attractive is nothing but your own imagination, which is blocking your path in seeing truth as it is. if you visualize the skin of that beautiful woman being removed than there is nothing but muscles, blood, and bones. it was a technique Buddhist use to liberate themself from unnecessary sexual urges. Nagarjuna may not have said women are filthy and men are superior. I hope not

If you are a serious about spiritual practice you would choose to be reborn male. If you’re female you haven’t done the same amount of practice in past lives that a male has. Also, there are no victims in Buddhism. The principal barrier to liberation for a woman is the clinging to a female identity.
@deboraquinaud6026
@deboraquinaud6026 4 года назад
I was tought the same. It was for training the mind, not that the woman are less capable. Tara itself is the example, who chooses to reborn always in female forme to show that one part of the teachings were beeing misunderstood by the cultural male sctructure, that the spiritual path there is nothing to do with that. We are not this flash, and all the ideas that perpetrate difference in capacity because of the body we were incarnate as human beings have no reality itself.

There is nothing about sex that blocks ones path to enlightenment. As a matter of fact..it can enhance the journey. Anyone who tells you otherwise is wrapped up in old and ignorant dharma.
@Bjarku

Nightbird eating doesn’t stop you from getting enlightened either, but if you become gluttonous and obsessed with eating you have a problem. This visualisation technique is clearly aimed at people who have a problem with sexual desire

@@TruthBeTold121212 There are multiple reasons why it is advantageous to be born male: women are more attached to their identity as women (as evidenced), the principle reasons why you would be born a woman is because (a) you are attached to beauty and (b) want to have children, a woman's body is physically weaker and less suited to intensive practice and physical labour, a woman's body has the monthly cycle where you loose Qi (chi) automatically as part of menstruation (men can control the loss of sperm by abstinence and you need a lot of energy to rise up spiritual levels), and it is easier for men to leave home for spiritual practice (there are more social bonds for women through having a greater emphasis on relationships). I could go on - but fundamentally emptiness is non-dualistic and you need to stop clinging to a dualistic identity. However, instead of actually contemplating why it might be advantagoues to have a male body you just resort to "misogynist". One of the admirable qualities of Tenzin Palmo is that she is actively choosing to take rebirth in female form to inspire and help women. Clearly this is even more necessary today given how we are living in the age of the inflated female ego - as you so ably proved. I suspect all this will just be "pearls before swine..." though.
