Serie lies to herself a lot but the truth shows through in her actions. She said that Flamme doesn't matter to her, but she invited Frieren to go on a walk with her so they could reminisce together. She said that she doesn't want to take any more human apprentices because they don't live long enough to reach the heights she desires, but she keeps doing it anyway and in the very next scene she was almost begging Fern to apprentice under her. She talks about the flower field spell with disdain but she chose to proctor the third test surrounded by flowers.

Yeah and it goes beyond that i believe that the true reason she was dissapointed to the old first-first class mage its because he was going to die eventually she is dissapointed because she wont be able to see another student again. Thats why (or one of the reasons at least) she says it is useless to teach to humans later, cause they die. I believe she is sad but she process it as dissapointment.

@@fauzin3338 It's more of lack of ability to understand emotions rather than a cope. Serie is someone who is very objective-mind on getting 'successful results', thus she collects all spells thinking that to a mage being spell hungry that's the strongest ambition. Our actions show our true alignment, she is a good person after all, but doesn't quite understand that would there be powerful mages that doesn't think like her.

indeed it does. After all, Serie is far older and more powerful than Frieren is. Such power though...often leads to boredom, if not loneliness. That said, she has carried on her disciple's (Framme's) last wishes admirably. The age of humanity has finally come, and what a glorious age she, Frieren, and even Kraft, now stand in. Everything that Serie did for Framme, was worth it, even if she'll never admit it.

Its like when Rimuru entered in the demon lords meeting, Guy and others lets their mana burst and fluctuate every time so the other demon lords and newbies cannot know their real strength. Unlike Rimuru who suppress his mana, others caught on instantly and now has a vague idea on how strong he is.

From another person’s comment and I totally agree and love it: Serie's probably the most complicated character in this series, she kept speaking out straight-forward harsh words, but unintentionally, she's doing exactly opposite of her words. 'Suppressing your mana is a waste of time.' Doing exactly that and far more suppressing skill than Frieren. "Flower field magic is absolutely ridiculous.' Having a massive greenhouse with flowers, admires them. 'Really shouldn't take on human apprentices.' Get excited to recruit Fern when she realizes Fern is the talent she had been seeking. ...And finally. 'Flamme dare to ask me to guide human magic?' Create the first class magician, teaches any talented mage one magic they desire, adore mages with talent. The most heartbreaking thing about Serie is, she's probably really, really lonely and seeks people who able to understand her while keeping up to her pace. Frieren is one of them but their idea goes separate ways that it's nearly impossible for these two to ever get along. Which exactly is why I believe Serie misses Flamme, even after centuries. She don't need to suppress her mana, but she did it anyway. She pick mages in a greenhouse full of flowers, instinctly caress them as she was getting excited for getting a talented apprentice.

Look back on Qual, he created a so powerful spell, everyone was in fear and they all worked together to overpower him. This could happen to series too if they see her power and finally know how dangerous she could be in the future if she would turn on them...

This comment is not mine but i think it summarize well what happened. "Serie is absolutely correct not to pass Frieren as a 1st Class Mage. Not because she can't compare with other 1st Class Mages because she certainly does, she surpasses them in most cases. And if she was using their abilities as her scale then no it's not fair....but that's not what she's doing. She is acknowledging that Frieren is nowhere near where she should be at this stage in her life. She spent most of her life after Flammes death as a forest hippie, tripping on mushrooms and suppressing her mana. All while doing nothing else until the heroes party found her 80yrs back. Then, and only then, did she start practicing magic. But even then it was on a limited and hidden scale so she could deceive demons. So compared to what her capabilities are she is an untapped ocean of potential that has just gone to waste. That doesn't mean that she didn't accomplish great things or that she wasn't needed by the world, it's just disappointing to know there's so much talent there that has never been tapped into. It's rather sad if you think about it from that perspective. Imagine having a kid or being the teacher of a kid whose talent was endless and having to watch them throw it all away. Yes it would be their right to do so but I don't have to be happy about it, that's their job to be happy about not living up to their potential. "

In addition to that, Serie is ambitious person and beyond genius so that, to her, magic is special privilledge for special people and she don't want to teach anyone that she deemed untalented.; she's that typical person who want to accomplished something huge in life, like starting an empire of mega corporation, and when she succeeded, she expected people like her should live an ambitious life like her; Frieren has that potential and talent which Serie acknowledged but she didn't have that pov like her, that's why she just doesn't like Frieren, just as you said, in her perspective, having a kid with such a talent throwing away, but for Frieren, enjoying life is much better in the end so it doesn't matter to her as she's living the life she wanted. => They knew they don't like each other guts because of the pov in life, but not stupid to dimished other specialities. Basically, Serie is that too special which made her too ambitious who believed everyone born talented should pursuit and accomplish big things in life

@@chaoschalice no, she spent a good 500 years seriously being a forest hippie although she did not give up on suppressing her mana. But those 500 years did go to waste where she acquired no combat experience. The reason for that will only be revealed later (I don't want to spoil), but she spent way more time just suppressing mana so her skills are underwhelming for her age - in Serie's words - and she's lucky that she has had a long life and that in facing demon king, she had a team to rely on and help. Serie expects that a genius elf mage having lived that long should be able to solo the Demon King, not having to do it four-on-one. That's probably why the Demon King wanted all elves killed so that they never rise to that level. Think about it this way, the second that the Demon King spotted Frieren suppressing mana, all the value of her main strategy disappeared, and she had to rely on her other real skills - which Serie considered underwhelming giving her age. Lucky she had the others.

@sweetpixiesmile
@sweetpixiesmile 3 месяца назад
We actually don't know if Frieren was JUST being a forest hippie. She was studying magic, but not offensive and flashy spells that Serie would have preferred, as an elitist warmonger. Frieren kept Flamme's instruction of keeping a low profile in order to fly under the radar so while she wasn't as powerful as she COULD have been for her age, she was powerful enough to do what Serie could never do - find trustworthy companions and defeat the Demon King. RE: your comment about Frieren's mana suppression being pointless, I disagree. Frieren's mana suppression got her and her friends to the final boss... and so, her training wasn't in vain. It got the party that defeated the Demon King in position to do so. Defeating the final boss, you pull out all the stops, so her suppression wasn't needed. It WAS needed after Himmel's death as demons once again began to increase activity. Serie didn't pass Frieren, not because she wasn't powerful enough, but because Frieren is the type of mage that flies in direct contradiction to Serie's preference. That and being a first class mage to Frieren is meaningless, and just something she would never pursue as an "unambitious" person unless driven by necessity. It's probably true Frieren is a disappointment to Serie. In her own words, she is way underpowered for her age as an elven mage. Frieren even acknowledges it... and she doesn';t care, becasue what Serie values is not what Frieren values. What Frieren means by saying she was lucky, is low key an incisive rebuttal to Serie's perspective that it was "luck." Serie's deliberately insulting use of the word "luck" triggered Frieren's memory of Himmel telling her about how they really first met, and it's a difference in perspective; Serie USED TO value independence through power, but after seeing how Flamme was right that Frieren defeated the Demon King with her party, realized that her approach was flawed, and after around 1030 years acquiesced to Flamme's dying wish for her to take over training human mages and to run a magic academy of sorts. Serie did comment on how even after the 50 years of her tutelage, the current crop of First Class Mages lacked adequate co-operation, which Frieren was saying was the key to the success of Himmel, Eisen, Heiter and Frieren. Serie is the hard path of power - Frieren is the soft path of relationship. Flamme trained Frieren who defeated the Demon King; Frieren trained Fern who ushered in the Era of Man. It's something Serie could never do, even after all the years she's been a mage - her vast magic is meaningless because of her approach - it has immediate effect, but nothing really lasting. Consider all the heroes that actually made a difference (Himmel and his party, Kraft ans his yet nameless friend, The Hero of the South), - Serie isn't one of them despite her strength. Some have speculated that Serie is an elitist tsundere, because her actions bely her words. Some food for thought - Frieren's words are really interesting, that Serie's intuition is always right, because what that means may not mean what we think it means. Serie is like Prometheus, who gave magic to Flamme, who disappointed her (and yet exceeded all her expectations in ways she doesn't understand), she was also right to reject Frieren even though Flamme predicted Frieren's future role. Frieren is now paradoxically training the new Magical Era of Humanity through Fern, and Serie has no choice but to acknowledge that.

Serie is a classic tsundere. Serie: *Rips up Flamme's will.* Also Serie: *Thinks about it for a millennium, then honors it anyway.* Serie: "Perhaps humans shouldn't be taken as apprentices" Also Serie: *Has ONLY human apprentices* Also Serie: *Remembers how Lernen was as a boy and expresses pride in how far he's come* ALSO Serie literally an hour later: "I would treat you well. I could take you to heights no other mage has seen" Serie: "Flower-making magic is childish" Also Serie: *Literally surrounded by huge flower arrangements on all sides, lovingly glides her hands across them as she walks* Serie: *Implies Sense's test was too easy and a little soft* Also Serie: "I shall screen them peacefully" SPECIFICALLY because Sense wouldn't want any of them to die.

Serie is disappointed in teaching her human students because she sees how much potential they could have if they lived longer. Learnen is skilled enough to notice something that only the Demon King had noticed before, but now he's an old man and doesn't have much time (in Serie's eyes) left. It's the latter of the options you suggested. Her mana is suppressed in that room. She does the same thing as Frieren. She just has that much mana that her suppressed mana = Frieren's total mana. She's tens of thousands of years old or older. How else would she know almost every spell in human history? Also, while it's very understandable to be frustrated with Serie, keep in mind two things. 1. She's not being entirely truthful when she speaks. Just think back to that flashback when she's talking about Flamme and remembering her playing as a child. How she, in general, has to repeatedly say disparaging things about her students almost like she's trying to convince herself that she doesn't care about them. spoiler(not really, just what i think): she does. 2. Frieren, who seems absolutely ancient to most people, is more or less an infant compared to Serie. Can you imagine how many humans she's cared about over the course of her life? It's not like Serie was always this way. How many Himmel's do you think she's had and then inevitably lost? Do you think Frieren will be exactly as she is now when she's experienced another 1000 losses equally as devastating as Himmel's death(or as Fern's death when the time comes). She won't. It's not as if Serie's outwardly cold and uncaring disposition just came out of nowhere. It's a much needed defense mechanism.

That makes sense, and is reflected in how she speaks of her human students. From her perspective, teaching them feels wasteful in that anything they become will be gone so quickly. It's not superiority, it's regret. I think it hurts her to see all these people and their efforts fade away. Frieren is good for her, in this way. She's one constant that can understand her perspective, yet Frieren constantly reminds her that humanity's short lives can be a beautiful thing, that an existence so temporary can help you reevaluate what really matters. I think Serie and Frieren respect each other greatly because of how their differences compliment each other.

12:10 Serie is not just restraining her mana "somewhat", she's restraining MAJORITY of her mana, just like Frieren does. We know that Frieren restrains her mana down to 10% of her total, because that's what Flamme taught her, and Flamme must have learned this technique from someone else.. Serie was her master. If she uses the same method, and her RESTRAINED mana is already equal to Frieren's TOTAL mana, this means that Serie's total mana is actually 10x bigger than Frieren's !!

I understand when the show just TOLD and not SHOW it, it can pass the wrong impression, but here's why i think Serie IS THAT BIG OF A DEAL in this world. *she has been here before human began civilization *she was THE ONE who started teaching magic to humans *she was Flamme's teacher, the core of human mages *she is LITERALLY THE ONE who created the magic association, so the test is hers as well *she's the one who's gonna give them the spells they want *she is compared to a freaking GODDESS *her intuition is always right *Frieren is basically nothing compared to her in terms of power and importance So basically, to summarize all this: THIS SHOW WOULDN'T EVEN EXIST in the first place in it wasn't for Serie. Serie has NOTHING against human mages. NOTHING. You just need to throw that idea away completely. You began with this when you thought she was scared of humans, but she was NEVER scared of them. Serie's whole philosphy is that only people with talent should be able to use magic. She never had anything against humans, she'll teach any human mage if she deems them talented enough. Her saying it's a waste of time to take on human mages is NOT her "looking down" on humans, it's just how frustated she is at the fact that all of her human apprentices die so quickly. Even when they reach such a high level of magic like Lernen, they'll just be gone in the blink of an eye for her ans this is FRUSTATING to her.

Serie sees humans like adults see children. She does not hate them, does not see them as trash, does not see them as competition. Just children that cannot live long enough to truly achieve greatness. Serie is just like an Asian parent/master that's passive aggressively trying to push their children and disciples to a higher standard. (And people will see in the next episode that it worked on Lernen). That sort of nuances seems too hard for many young Americans to get.

To my interpretation, Serie outwardly presents like one of the Old Gods in fantasy tropes. She very much believes and lives by the principle of "might is right" and that guides her morals and stances. To her, magic is a tool like a sword to be polished and refined. She believes that mages should be ambitious and constantly strive to improve themselves and their spells. She believes that only the worthy should be able to achieve the pinnacle of magic. Of course Frieren doesn't live up to her standards. Frieren spent all her time after Flamme's death in relative obscurity, neglecting any training besides mana suppression (which Serie herself points out is a massively inefficient use of time). Even now, the spells Frieren is most interested in have nothing to do with battle- she finds joy in spells that make grapes sour, that clean bronzed statues, that make shaved ice. She isn't searching for powerful relics in dungeons, she delights in magical items others consider junk. That being said, that is not the only side to Serie. This show makes a point to show that characters aren't only how they present on the surface- you have to dig deeper. Stark presents as a useless coward but he is hardworking and brave. Fern presents as cold and emotionless but she is sensitive and caring. Serie outwardly projects a visage of aloofness and dismissiveness, but she deeply cares about her students. We see that she remembers everything about Flamme- to the point where she visualizes her younger self and remembers her favorite spells and personality. We see she clearly remembers Lernen's younger self and knows his characteristics. Are those the actions of someone who truly doesn't care? We see even more of that in the environmental storytelling. Serie leaves her throne room to meet the prospective mages. She could have opted to have them come in and prostrate themselves before her but no- she is the one stooping on the ground to meet them. When she meets potentially powerful mages- she stands up and converses with them as equals (Frieren and Fern). Let's also take a closer look at where the interview is held. Serie conducts her interview in a cathedral like greenhouse. A stained-glass mural of a flower is the main defining feature of the building. There are plenty of windows that allow in ample sunlight and the place is full of flowers. Judging from the variety of flowers present, the fact that they are neatly arranged in vases and plots, the way Serie is carefully examining them and the fact that this building's function is clearly a greenhouse- these flowers were grown the natural way. Despite calling Flamme's spell useless- she is here physically gardening flowers something that takes time and effort to do, she is enacting Flamme's will of running the Magic association despite tearing said will apart. She is willing to take a human student merely minutes after she says "I should stop training human students". Heck, she even proctored the exam rather than let unqualified mages end up dead in an exam they are clearly not ready for. Despite everything, Serie cares.

The thing is Serie sees things with a pratical eye, she does see value in the humans (she never denied their talent) but she feels desapointed because their lives were too short, they almost never reach their full potential meraly because of time, she see their talents she train them but their are gone before they fully grow, the desapointament of see their talent fall short makes her regret a little had pick then in the first place, because she knew their wouldn't last long but still she tried and got "hurt" again

@AwakeProductions! She didnt pass Frieren for the same reason she passed Fern , because she doesnt like that Frieren hasnt lived up to the potential she has as an elf mage, she believes Frieren could have been way stronger than she is if she dedicated herself to more serious magic spells and trainning instead of roaming around gathering spells that sometimes (or maybe most times) are kinda uselless (at least for fighting) , so she finds her way of living wastefull and in the same way she saw that Fern was living up to her potential as a human mage especially since she saw that even all tha huge man she has around her isnt the true extend of her mana but its the suppresed version of it. PS: Frieren already understands and knows that but she doesnt really care so she had axcepted that she wouldnt ever pass.

Serie does see the value of talented humans. She was just disappointed that humans have a very short life span. It reminded her of Flamme & her current apprentices. Her perspective changed. She doesn't even want to honor Flamme's will to teach humans magic yet now she is leading them. I hope you don't underestimate Serie that much. Serie and Frieren are much alike, they lack comprehension of emotion but currently they are both trying to understand. All these thanks to Flamme.

Serie just comes off as being uncaring just like Frieren did in some of the earlier episodes. Just the fact that Serie made the test to foster growth in human mages is a reason to believe that she cares about the future. If I'm not mistaken it was in Flamme's will that Serie tore up. Serie did exactly what Flamme wished her to do by administering these tests.

17:12 "Maybe someone else would"... ah yes, but Serie is the one proctoring, not "someone else". And since she is th examiner, it doesn't matter what some other random dude may think about it. I mean, if a teacher grades you in school, are you also going to say: "Who is (s)he to grade me? Maybe someone else would give me a higher score!" Maybe so, but that is irrelevant. There's always SOMEONE who has to grade you, and there could always be SOMEONE who would grade you differently, so your notion here doesn't make sense, since it has no argumental value. In an exam setting, it's clear that it's the one grading you is what (and who) matters, not what your best friend or some stranger thinks of it.

yea you missed the point here lol 11:30... Serie IS suppressing her mana lol Also she isnt looking down on humans, her saying she shouldnt take human students is because they have such short lives its hard for them to test their potential because they grow old so fast. I think it is spite, not out of hate, but out of disappointment. I also think that Serie is a possible version of what Frieren could have been, an elf who loves magic and to collect spells. She has the luxury of time and they don't but they seem to get attached to meaningless stuff that reduce them to their mortal self , but in truth she love them . She is the one that declared the Era of Human would come due to the action of her disappointing and dearest apprentice Flamme . She's disappointed such being suffer mortality and the whims of their heart whether fragile or strong . maybe she dislike Frieren because despite being an elf with all that comes with it , she is closer to a human than she lead on idk

serie is probably the most misunderstood character in frieren, shes even been doing right by flamme's will this whole time by eventually giving in and starting the first class mages. her outward behavior is really more of a coping mechanism to deal with the fact that she far outlives any human student she takes on, how she knows so many (surely) incredible spells that many begin to seem boring or useless. shes at a place far beyond what fern referred to as the "height of magic" and is incredibly bored and loney in her life. i personally think the true reason she wants frieren to become a mage like her is simply so she has at least one person she can relate to in life and one that wont die in the blink of an eye from her perspective.

Serie lawyer here 👨‍💼 1. Mana suppression is useless for Human because it take hundred of years to do it properly. Its only feasible for long lived race. Only Flamme -edited- and later Fern shown capable of it so far. 2. Learning mana suppression hinder your development. A bad trade-off in Serie eyes. 3. Serie probably started suppressing her mana later in her life, so it doesn't hinder her development as much. But for Frieren, she done it early and for the most of her life. So Serie probably doesn't spite mana suppression IF its done by long lived race and learned later in their life. Which probably what she do.

The flashback with Himel and the flower spell was so great. The “useless” flower spell is what got her with Himel and the rest of the group. Again Frieren useless spell is what got her where she is and got her team to defeat the demon king. Serie could not have done it. Serie could never go with Himel’s group. Flamme was right all along. Serie doesn’t have the personality to defeat the demon king.

Out of all the reactions I have seen (from you or otherwise) this is a sad, sad reaction to the whole matter. It's some sort of young American woman's entitlement mentality that we see so often nowadays. "Who are you to tell me I'm not good enough? I know I am good enough and that's all that counts!" "Do I care that it's *your* resources that I am looking after, and it's of course up to you to decide who to give it to? No!" "I'm the main character! You are just support! Stop talking down to me!" "I judge characters based on whether they are nice and I only want things from nice people!" This is Serie's association. This is her First Class qualification. You need that to go further north and cannot overcome the challenge yourselves. So you play by her rules unless you want your journey to stop here. End of story. She does not owe you crap. Stop saying things like "who is she to decide! this is not fair!" That's laughable. By now all the audience can see who are the strong ones and who only got lucky or got carried, and Serie corrected weeded them all out. As Frieren said, Serie is always right. I'm glad most other reactors seem to get the point... Serie wants to train war mages that are so powerful that they can solo the Demon King. But Frieren turned out a disappointment for her because although she managed to do it, she had to rely on teammates which in Serie's books that's almost cheating. Serie is upset that Frieren didn't turn out strong enough, that Flamme never visited her in life but left the burden of continuing human magic training to her at her death, etc. just like an old grandma upset and disappointed with her daughter and her granddaughter. She expressed her disappointment to Lernen in a passive-aggressive way to push him to be stronger and more courageous (and as you will see, it worked). But the love she has for all these people is there. Serie sees humans as adult see children, rather than looking down on them or seeing them as threats or competition. Serie is just too proud to show it. And this sort of nuances are apparently too hard for young Americans to get. Especially a young American woman who has already made a decision to dislike her and evaluate her from the most negative light possible.

Yes, exactly. The implication was that Serie is always suppressing her mana, just like Frieren is. But Serie is so ancient and powerful that even her _suppressed_ mana range is as massive and overwhelming as Frieren's is when she _unleashes_ her own. Serie is truly unimaginably powerful - as is fitting, for an elven mage who was alive to see the era of myths, the time where the Goddess herself supposedly walked the earth. Serie is, perhaps, the closest thing this world still has to a god living among them.

I actually love Serie. She's so blunt and real, yet also a complete hypocrite. It was so obvious that she was coping hard when she learned about Flamme's death, saying all those cold things while reminiscing with a sad smile. She remembered everything about Flamme. It was a parent-child relationship until Flamme surpassed her in a way (not in power but arguably in terms of achievement). Serie doesn't agree with Flamme or Frieren, but she thinks at least Flamme was ambitious and achieved great things in a very brief window of time. Whereas, to her, Frieren seems lazy and rudderless. She knows Frieren was a member of the Hero's party but can't understand why. Frieren has no ambition. She just wants to travel, collect useless spells, and sleep a lot. Also, I don't blame Serie for not wanting humans to have magic. We ruin everything we get our hands on. Gatekeeping magic is common sense. But she clearly does not hate humans or even look down upon them, IMO. She just copes hard because caring for them makes her sad. That attempt to steal Fern was dirty though. She knows Frieren put mad work into Fern and tries to snatch it without hesitation. That's the only thing I fault her for.

Lol, you are so blinded by your weird hatred towards Serie that you can't see the fact that she's correct every single time she makes a decision. And yes, she's also correct about Frieren. You just don't like the decision, because you don't like the truth regarding the level she's at right now. Fern is at a completely different level from her given her young age and little experience. The difference in talent between Frieren and Fern is frightening, actually. So it's not weird she passes Fern and fails Frieren.

Pretty sure Serie suppresses her mana as well just doesn't make it look as "small" as Frieren. The 1st class mage said that Frieren's mana is equal to Serie's but if Serie is actually suppressing her mana as well, it means she has A LOT more than Frieren - but then again that's just a theory
@Bayard1503

Serie has such great instincts that she could do only interviews each time but she goes with the test exactly for the sake of human feelings. Otherwise they would call it unfair. Frieren is very powerful but she doesn't deserve the rank of first-grade mage. These mages are the protectors of humanity, they are literally sent to fight the biggest demon threats when they arise.... and what does Frieren do for the last 80 years? Nothing, collect folk spells. The demon threat is so huge in the North and yet she's not doing anything. If she happens on a demon she will deal with it but otherwise?? She doesn't really care, even now she's on a very selfish quest. So as Frieren tells herself, Serie is never wrong, she's not worthy of the title... Maybe later if she takes a more active role in this world.
