Wow, look at the ramification on this thing. I've got a bunch that I've started from cuttings that need some early styling work, so I'll be referencing this video moving forward. Loving you vids Xavier, thanks for all your knowledge!
That is so kind of you to say. I am just enjoying the fronds as they extend right now. Just waiting for them to turn ruby red before I get the clippers out :)
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I find it odd that England and deep deep south Georgia are pretty much the same climate and the same stage of general stage of growth.
Love your back up singers, birds make the best background music. Great instructional..you explained everything perfectly...no wonder your Redwood is so perfect, stunning!
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Excellent. I can't wait to get to where I'm going so I could stretch out and begin a collection..again, thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks for that very useful information. I have some redwoods and kinda struggled last few years working on the ramification of it. Now I know what I was doing wrong.
Watched this video some time ago, but I‘ve missed to comment. 😅 So I‘m taking the opportunity now, to congratulate you on that gorgeous Metasequoia! 👍😍🙋♀️
Thank you so much The tip about pruning in first part of June I didn’t know I have a redwood that’s not looking its best this will definitely help next year to Improve it
My garden is so noisy - I only realised when I started listening to the edits. It sound slike they are laughing at me sometimes when i say things! Enjoy it when it arrives. just keep it in a shaded area and well watered.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I know the problem. In fact, the problem RIGHT NOW is so bad I have decided to make a short video on how to tackle that problem. Shooting them has been suggested, but that is not for me!
Roger you just made my Monday - thank you so much. I had a rough night as well after spending too much time in the sun at Tony's extravaganza. Totally unexpected but definitely appreciated. Cheers
Another great video , ive just been trimming back randomly with mine , so its probably time that i started doing it properly to get a nicer shape , as you have 😊
To be fair, they are difficult to get them to do what you want. Often I am dictated by how the fronds grow and where those new shoots point. This is why I love the challenge and often go for quirky designs. This year I am doing a 'spooky' redwood because it has such an awkward branch structure. Keep enjoying it :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat oh definitely , the fronds are quite long and very soft and delicate , its difficult to get any shape from wiring , but as you showed , you have to plan ahead , ill certainly take your advice when trimming for shape , thanks again
Hazarding a guess I am saying no. Ryan Neil does a couple of great videos at Bonsai Mirai on both of these trees. If you are not a member you could always join free for 7 days and watch what you need. I dont have either of those trees so cannot give you any personal views - sorry Andy. Cheers Xav.
bought my first bonsai today and it is a dawn redwood. honestly terrified to cut anything off before i consult someone at my local nursery but this gave me a little more confidence
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat quick question though. If there is a branch or green growth that I want to get rid of can I cut it off completely without worrying about ruining anything? Might be a silly question but I’m new to the hobby
Hi fella good vid mate. My dawn redwood has only growth on the top everything below has dropped off it’s about 1m tall if I cut it low down in spring will it be ok
Following a heatwave, I was away a couple of days away and some of my leaves, mostly on top of my Metasequoia have wilted. To the point where I dont think they will find their vitality again. Should I leave them or remove them. The branches there are still green. Thanks for your help
That happened to me last year. Just leave them and keep the tree in a shady spot. Once everything drops in the autumn you can then make decisions on what to keep. Cheers
Oh dont I just know that feeling. This year is all about review and tree 'reduction' for me. Honest - I am actually going to try and reduce my levels down...
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I would like different trees. I got overwhelmed with the pomegranates. I still have many. I'd like to try different trees. Get more experience. Although having all those seeds sprout was an experience and a half.
Oh yes , that's me too, I still have very little knowledge on all the different species but I'm still buying them and learning how to keep them alive to start with, and watching as many videos as possible 😅
