A couple of weeks ago I accidentally snapped my Wychwood Flow 6ft 3wt fly fishing rod in my shed. I was mortified to say the least! So I contacted Wychwood about replacement sections but unfortunately this rod never had spare parts manufactured for it and the rod has been discontinued. This only leaves me with one option and that is to by a new rod as I can't find a used 6ft Flow anywhere online and shops are sold out.
After many hours of not being certain which rod to buy as a replacement I came across the Wychwood River & Stream 7ft 3wt rod and my heart was set on this. Lucking for me I purchased the last one...this was meant to be!
I had the rod about a week desperate to get out with it so during the afternoon, before school run, decided to tie up a few nymphs to try out down the river. The simple pattern was tied to a size 20 jig hook using only red thread, peacock hurl, tail fibres from a black and white feather I have and a 2.5mm silver tungsten slotted bead.
When I returned from school run I grabbed my bag, rod & dog to head off down the local river, The Afon Lwyd. This was Jasper's first time fishing along a river so I felt a little anxious as other dogs are renowned for entering the water.
I planned to fish from Burton's Biscuits bridge up as far as Cwmbran Boating Lake. Approaching the river I could see that the water level was running low. Much lower than my previous video.
Early on in the session I noticed a fish feeding under the bridge to my left. I quickly changed from a nymph to a dry fly but the fish and I were soon disturbed by a swarm of noisy kids so I moved up stream and decided to let kids be kids.
From here on up I fished with the nymph pattern I had tied earlier on this afternoon. I really wanted to put into practice some of the things Nathan taught me. I tried to cover as much water as I could in the timeframe I had throwing the nymph to as many places as I could as you never know where a fish may be laying.
I caught 4 fish altogether but due to not realising my memory card became full my biggest fish of the evening was not filmed. The fish was no more than 1lb but still sad I didn't get to show you the golden buttery belly on this fish.
I managed to get some underwater footage in this video so I hope you appreciate that. In future videos I will do my best to get some more footage to share with you from under the surface.
All in all I enjoyed the session despite losing 2 other fish up to 1lb. As for Jasper well I feel he got a little bored having to wait while I wade up the river. Furthermore, Japser was really well behaved and followed me all the way up while behaving impeccably around other dogs...ATTA BOY JAZZY!
