His Final Appearance on stage at The Athenaeum Melbourne 23 Sep 2013
On the 9th October 2013, Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read, one of Australia's most notorious criminals, passed away quietly at home. Sixteen days earlier Chopper took the stage at Melbourne's historic Athenaeum Theatre in front of a packed audience to talk about his life - a life of crime yes,
but ultimately Mark's is a story of personal redemption against all odds.
Interviewer - John Mangos
Produced by David Roy Williams for Tombowler
Directed by Mark Bakaitis
Researcher and writer - Simone Ubaldi
Chopper Management - Andrew Parisi

He stretched the truth; he was really a failed criminal that indulged in self-promotion. Why Chopper got so much attention from the public has always fascinated me. He was more of an entertainer than a underworld figure.
@saigoneze4465

Agree .For sure he exaggerated his exploits and could tell a yarn .But it doesn’t mean he wasn’t a tough crim and did some real heavy dirt in his day .Someone that cuts his ears off just to move yards is no joke lol

He talked shit but you don't spend close to 28 years in maximum security for being an entertainer.

Agree with all the comments here. As a crook himself, he found a way to make money in the unconventional sense and that is by telling fictional crime stories, indulging in self promotion. However, saying that, it was only for the money so he can live a normal life without working a 9 to 5 job. I don’t think he was a fan of the attention and glorifying himself. He simply discovered that others found him entertaining, dangerous and charismatic, so he exploited that to make a buck. A fact to prove this is that his last interview with a current affair where he confessed to four murders was actually all fabricated, except killing Sammy the Turk. He knew he was going to die and approached A Current Affair, stating that he would like $250,000 for the confession of 4 murders. His bodyguard said that he wanted the money so he can look after his wife and children when he was gone. So just goes to show you that his incentive for dispensing fictional stories was noble to to some extent.

They broke the mould when the made this bloke, that's for sure. I'm glad he got some years of a loving family life like proper before he died. Because that's all we have in the end isn't it no matter what sort of life you have or do live. who you love and who loves you back is all that matters. Plenty judge, but few understand another persons journey and experiences, some whom have an idea generally wont judge. Not just Choppers life and choices, but all types of people whom live or have lived a totally different life to yours. Anyway thats my two bob

Mark, as, He preferred to be called by his name, not the Concrete dog tag, was an enigma of the social aspects experienced in 1970’s Australia. War torn peoples judged by the Class, Race or Religion of an Individual.

1st of all, he's funny. That makes all the difference in aus. Secondly, if he was "just a criminal" he would have prayed upon anyone and everyone to meet his needs but he didn't, he prayed on criminals and that's a huge difference.
@tim7052
@tim7052 11 месяцев назад
@D0WNSINNER Son, whether he preyed on everyone or just other criminals, he remains a convicted murderer and criminal. Don't try to BS me that if a non-criminal had info the police wanted, he wouldn't try and stop that person!! Get real son!! He was a career criminal, son, no matter how you try to spin it - because a turd will always remain a turd, no matter how you try to dress it up!!
