This apartment isn't obviously fancy, but it is right in the middle of Oslo, at Tjuvholmen, where you probably pay more per square foot than you do in Manhattan... and according to newspapers at the time was purchased in 2020 for $2 million (21 million Norwegian Kroner) including a parking spot. Also, Magnus' actual net worth is around $20-25m, that includes his company's assets, this stuff is public info in Norway.

He has won a little over $10 million in tournament prizes (this doesn't account for appearance fees, but you have to consider that a lot of that money comes from FIDE championships, and tours that don't pay those). We also know that his 8% stake in Play Magnus got him about $6.5million when it sold in 2022. Though technically his father got 20% of that, since he has a stake in Magnuschess, their holding company. Then comes all the other income, but you have to consider the relatively high tax rates in Norway here. There is a reason Naka lives in Florida :p And, while it is true that he has the sponsorships, we aren't talking fotballer or tennis money here. I doubt the Puma deal was that lucrative compared to what most of their athletes get, for example. Norway is a bit extreme in its transparency. Anyone can look up anyone's taxes. But it does give you a sense of equality. Your boss probably won't pay your colleague a lot more than you since you can easily check. In addition to this apartment, Magnus owns a large house in Oslo, but he doesn't live there. I believe his parents rent it from him.
