11:27 - Should we try to model current pu-erh productions after past "classic" productions?
12:51 - "The Journey, not the Destination"
13:48 - Why would someone choose your YS Brand Pu-erh instead of a large tea factory Pu-erh like Menghai (Da Yi) or Xiaguan?
18:12 - When we work with small producers and family growers the money goes directly to them
19:25 - Family and village growers are typically growing in bio-diverse conditions, not monoculture.
21:29 - 20 Years in the future, which brands that produced raw pu-erhs in the 2010's will be considered "classics"?
23:53 - "Boutique" labels produce high quality teas with very low production quantities, which means they will be rare and sought after in the future.
24:51 - What are the advantages or dis-advantages for a pu-erh vendor to produce a "non-region specific" tea cake.
29:20 - Sharing region specific information aids the consumer in their education and aids them in developing tools that allow them to hone in on other teas that they might also like.
30:13 - Even teas from the same village can still be quite different!

Thanks Scott. I've come to view Yunnan Sourcing's offerings, be they blends or single estate, as a guarantee of quality for type, grade, and freedom from pesticides. This trust remains whether or not a given product suits my personal taste or price point. Newcomers to this fascinating, complex, and enjoyable market of Pu-erh can do a lot worse than sampling a number of YS products, which are the manifestation of Scott's considerable personal knowledge and experience, thereby exploring the Tao of Pu-erh for themselves.

I was hoping you would give your opinion on this, as I think the questions were good and right, thought provoking. Your video gives a very nice overview from a different perspective. Your answers were available already, most of what you talked about you've talked about in other videos but in bundling it up you developed the theme further, if not for yourself, then definitely for me. As a newcomer to Puerh tea myself this explains some of the quirks of the market and spells out what is expected of me. This is truly helpful.

Very interesting video, cheers Scott. Looking forward to part 2 (and hopefully 3,4,5,6 etc). I think "now" is a great time to be tea nerd and I credit a lot of my tea appreciation and enjoyment to you. I'm grateful you've helped open a whole world of tea and made it accessible.

I've seen 2 of your videos and now i have a good felling that you are knowable and trustworthy. I will shop with you for my puerh needs. I'm new to tea in general and just recently bought my first raw cake. My interest in puerh stems from research in to being health. I read some where that puerh has the most health benefits.

Hi Kevin, I'm glad that you found us. Pu-erh is in general a healthy tea to consume. Like anything else too much caffeine might make you feel weak or tired (but unable to sleep soundly). But just the right amount is nice for day to day life and functioning on a higher level.

The "brand specific" tea producers who give little or no (cryptic) region of origin information have turned me off recently. I like to be able to think about the tea rather than the hype pumped into a production. The transparency of YS pulls me back time and Again. Not that I haven't enjoyed a fancy named cake of mystery in samples, but I'm not going to drop bank on something I know nothing objective about. Proprietary blends are something different, but single estate teas deserve to be proclaimed. The learning associated with recognizing regional characteristics is lost (to me) in the mystery cakes and I derive much pleasure from that aspect.
@Yunnansourcing
@Yunnansourcing 5 лет назад
Yes that's how I feel about it too. I think alot of people just want to ooo and ah at pretty things and they don't want to be bothered with learning about regions and what not. Each to their own. I am glad you "grok" my approach. Thank you!

Splendid video. I'm watching the old ones as you haven't posted in a bit. Here's my question. I got into pu-erh just before the "bubble." Back then, everything was sold based on age with. obviously the older the better. But it seems to me that people in the '60s never envisioned this tea as an investment. Back then, what teas would have been put in the attic? It's my theory that most of these "wonderful aged teas" were really teas that weren't very good to drink. So I wonder, if a cake has no apparent flaws, in 30 years, might it all just be "classic?" Of course, I'll be dead then, but so it goes.
@Yunnansourcing
@Yunnansourcing 5 лет назад
Correct... virtually nobody in the 60's had the idea to age long-term. The teas were probably purchased in large lots and then sold off gradually over several years. The teas produced then were all blends and typically done in fairly large batches. Of course nobody really knows exactly where all the mao cha came from and how much of it was plantation and how much was old arbor. Just because all the classics were blends doesn't mean anything since all that's all there was. What we know is that those teas were good and with age some were even great. The idea that we have to try to clone the past approach is absurd, not to mention it's totally impossible.

Thanks Scott. Pu-erh is still quite confusing for me. The video helped a lot. I rely on you to help me with clean, bio-diverse, tasty tea. I greatly appreciate your support of small farmers. I also love you green teas but want to get away from mono-cultures. I look forward to more general educational videos from you.

Hello, Scott. I would like to ask you a question for your further videos: which years(of puerh production) you wouldn't recommend to consider for purchasing?Thank you for your videos by the way
@Yunnansourcing
@Yunnansourcing 6 лет назад
Every year has some differences, but there is no year that I would tell you to avoid. If we pressed it under the YS brand label then I am confident that it was a good tea. Yunnan is a big place so that means alot of variance in the climates. Hard to say all tea harvested in a certain year or harvest was bad.

13:48 - one clear advantage of big companies over YS which you do not mention is their buying power which makes a high quality tea cheaper than small producers. Big tea companies can buy bigger batches for cheaper due to economies of scale and thus have more flexibility in adjusting their prices lower to meet market conditions. A smaller producer, while having more flexibility in picking a maocha (and rejecting it if need arises) - will be far more constrained in terms of price and will have to sell the finished product at a higher price. Business & Economics 101
@Yunnansourcing
@Yunnansourcing 4 года назад
The problem with your assessment is that they ONLY buy bigger batches. ALL good tea from clean and natural tea gardens (aka not plantation) is by definition small batch and not ultra-cheap. If I was trying to reproduce a 7542 or a Xiaguan Tuo with same material and produce 30,000 kg of it, then yes it would be very difficult for me to accomplish (not that I bother to undertake it).
@michaelovtchinnikov9649
@michaelovtchinnikov9649 4 года назад
@@Yunnansourcing yes thank you for the remark. I am pointing out to the fact, if all things were the same in terms of quality between the vendors, the big guys have the ability to offer same quality at cheaper prices - and this is not to say that probably the bigger portion of what they produce is of mediocre quality anyways. However they do have that edge permitting them to be more flexible with the price and sustain a price war if need be. Though I can understand that this probably does not arise since they are mostly focused on big plantations rather than smaller tea growers.
@Yunnansourcing
@Yunnansourcing 4 года назад
Sure... but it's an impossible scenario. Typically large tea factories are in competition with themselves. If they produced tea much cheaper 2 to 4 years in the past, and can't product that cheaply anymore, nobody wants their new productions.

I know that pu-erh is a region specific designation and a type of heicha, but are there pu-erh style teas being produced in other regions of the globe say; Japan, India, Southeast Asia, or even South America or Africa? and if not, why not?
@Yunnansourcing
@Yunnansourcing 6 лет назад
No idea about that. Those areas are beyond the scope of my knowledge.
