AN EXPENSIVE ACCIDENT (The Wild Atlantic Way || Ring of Kerry)

Van life on the Wild Atlantic Way becomes very expensive this week as one of our most pricey possessions meets his grizzly end.
We are Tom and Iz - a couple from Cornwall who decided to hit the road and embrace a new way of life , trying to escape the rat race and aiming to embrace adventure and soak up nature every day! We're currently traveling around Ireland in our transit van along the Wild Atlantic Way. Ireland has really stolen our hearts; come along with us on this week's episode to explore the Ring of Kerry with us. If you've missed our travels along the WAW so far - check out our previous episodes, we upload weekly on a Sunday at 5pm :)
We start our week in Derreennageeha, a beautiful tranquil spot not far away from the busy spots of Killarney. We drive a few minutes up the road to the Ballaghasheen Pass, a windy pass twisting and turning up a steep mountain road.
We take a quick unplanned 5km stroll around Lickeen Wood. We move on to Lough Caragh, a spot we had to stop at and admire the views. We move on to Ross Behy Beach, a small strip of beach coming out opposite from Inch beach, the coast is lined with beautiful mountains. The drive up from Ross Behy is just spectacular, if not a little iffy in the transit van, its very steep but we made it and boy did we enjoy the views!
Our next stop is Tailor's House in Co. Kerry, a cottage that we had been kindly invited to stay at by one of our wonderful subscribers, Sandy! Thank you so much Sandy! We loved your place. It was gorgeous, with a turf fireplace, it was the perfect base to explore the surrounding area. The view from the front window was just something else! We do an excited tour, then Tom gets settled in with LOTR. We set up a Lost In Transit HQ at the dining table and get on with some work.
The next day we head to Cahergal Stone Fort. Unfortunately this is where our very expensive mistake occurs...we try to stay positive despite it being a big blow to our savings. We continue to enjoy the ring fort and head to a second one 100m down the road. It's here that Tom discovers another Souterrain and Isabel is beside herself with nerves waiting for Tom to emerge from metres underground.
We decide we need a swim in the sea, its very overdue, so we run in and feel great from it as usual! It always feels like a challenge going back in but you never regret it!
The next day we take a long and very expensive trip to Killarney...to replace our very expensive mistake...The following day we check out of Tailor's cottage. Would totally recommend a stay at Sandy's place- the cottage sleeps 4 , has so much parking and is only 45 mins drive from Kerry airport, link below.
www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/102652...
We get back into the rhythm of vanlife and head straight to Valentia island, a wrong turn takes us to The Grotto, a Slate Quarry, where you can get a paid tour. We just have a quick look and head on to see some Tetrapod footprints- the second oldest evidence of a four legged animal on land! (first in Poland apparently) - Isabel asks science teacher Tom some questions about the footprints. We finish the day with the Bray Head walk up to the signal tower with the sea mist rolling in.
The next day we show you our van bed set up, only to find that the sun comes out at midday so we set off for a hike. Tom nearly loses his glasses at Cum an Easpaig and we set off for the Bolus Head Loop Walk. Its a 2 hour walk that takes in the views of the magical Skellig islands. Highly recommend! We find an amazing park up 5 mins down the road from the walk at Finnian's Bay, where we can open up our backdoors and enjoy the sunset! We show you our projector set up and watch Star Wars - filmed on Skellig Michael! The next day we start the day with a swim in the sea! We then walk to a nearby holy well and a beautiful harbour Caladh an Bháid, where the monks used to catch boats across to the Skellig isles from. We finish the day with an Omnia oven cake.
Thank you so much for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe if you enjoyed it :)

Quite a dramatic episode. Relieved that your stay at my place appeared to be stress free and a big thanks for all the nice things you said about it. You managed to light a turf fire - fair play. Turf burning may cease to be part of the Irish way of life quite soon so that could become a real archive clip! Come back any time and good luck with the rest of the Wild Atlantic Way. Sandy

Fair play to ya Sandy for letting them stay in your beautiful cottage but what you failed to tell them what the payback for staying in the cottage is? a week in the bog around May/June.... that would make a good vlog 😄

Fortunately Ireland doesn’t really get the extreme weather conditions but it’s very wet and windy. We are constantly at the mercy of the jet stream and Atlantic storms. The region you are in now is strongly influenced by the Gulf Stream. But the jet stream influences all the weather over Ireland and the uk . It’s good to see you guys staying positive and always smiling. Between busted drones and winter weather. Happy travels .
@Dreyno
@Dreyno 2 года назад
2010 the Gulf Stream paused and we realised our true latitude. -12° to -14° by day and -15° to -20° at night. It was an eye opener. Still, by the end of the month everyone had learned the value of layering, proper gloves and a proper winter coat.
@norwegianzound
@norwegianzound 9 месяцев назад
@@Dreyno Ummm....LOL. The Gulf Stream didn't pause. The whole North Atlantic gyre doesn't ever "pause". The reason for the awful weather was the movement of Jet Stream further south. As Prof John Sweeney of Maynooth University said: "The jet stream is the carrier of weather to much of Europe and across Ireland. Conventionally, it brings us mild and moist Atlantic weather -- 2010 has been characterised by a jet stream which is much more loopy and wave like and when that happens we tend to get a lot of anomalies so we've been having extremely strange conditions,"
@Dreyno
@Dreyno 9 месяцев назад
@@norwegianzound Do you take everything you read so literally? It must be exhausting. The Jet Stream usually takes moist, warm air from the Gulf Stream towards Ireland. In 2010, a negative North Atlantic Oscillation of -6 brought Artic air towards Ireland rather than the usual positive NAO which brings blustery, damp weather from the Gulf Stream. This is what’s called a blocking pattern and yes, it “paused” the effects of the Gulf Stream to all intents and purposes as the warm, damp air could not progress in it’s usually direction. So take your “lol” and stick it where the sun don’t shine (unfortunately that’s usually Ireland too ☹️)

First off, love watching the videos as haven't been around the coast much over last couple of years... But.... Just bought a van recently and loving the various knacky items like the oven and in this episode in love with the projector. Was toying with a TV but this looks so much better. Off to do the research. Hope Dudly and Eunice treated ye well, mind yourselves. Hugs from County Limerick 🤗

Hey mary and barry! aw so pleased you like the vids and yes we love our omnia oven so good to have van food! we use the m1 viewsonic projector about £200 from amazon - recommend as its light so we velcro it to the ceiling. enjoy your van - how exciting! Isabel :)

Hey Tom & Iz! I’ve just come upon your channel and I love this series along the wild Atlantic way in Ireland! ❤️ I live in Canada and my husband’s ancestors are from Ireland, I heard you mention Killarney and I realized I was sitting under a really old painting of Killarney that was brought over from Ireland when my husband’s family immigrated to Canada probably in the late 1800’s. The landscape there really looks similar to this painting! I have never been to Ireland but would really like to go sometime!

Thank you, that whole video had a really happy, cheerful vibe about it. Watching it made my day. I loved the slow Mo part of the sea, excellent. I have to say, I was cacking myself when you went into that very tight crawl space Tom, did not enjoy that one bit. And watching the fear rise in Isabel really made me worry for her. That was very clever cinematography. So all in all, 25 minutes of grinning stupidly at the screen and 5 minutes of crapping myself, perfect Sunday evening. Over too soon. Thank you again and stay safe.

Lost in Transit HQ, right here..!!🚐🤣🤣🤣 Isabel and Tom, Just watched yet another epic Vlog from your adventures in Kerry. Thinking back on last weeks video when you rightly decided not to finish your climb but erred on the side of caution and then to see Tom crawling in under 500 million tonne of stone.🤔🤣🤣 I always find myself smiling at the really nice light hearted way you both reel us viewers into the Vlog with the feeling that we're part of the journey you're on..🚐👏. Have to say there were one or two moments I found myself on the edge of my seat....😊 You're certainly making the most of the available sunshine to showcase the lovely area you're in. Stay safe U2(and I don't mean the pop group) and safe flying Tom... 🚐👏👏☘💚

Really enjoyed this one folks, you captured so much in it, amazing!! ... Can we make an agreement now, that Tom enters no more caves 😂😂 jaysus, when I seen them iron bars at the other end, I'll not repeat what came out of my mouth haha. I swore Isobel was about to call in the rescue teams! But fare play to you Tom, you went back through it and got back out where you started off, and done it all for us! So goodman!! You are great role models for positivity I mean that, your videos are very up lifting and are definitely an encouragement to us all to get outdoors and enjoy what we have around us! Also will take on board the 45 minute rule for working, I like it! 👍👍

Anticipate these vids as much as anything. The only good thing about visiting in winter is the scarcity of tourists and midges. Was in Valentia last year and will be in Portmagee this year kayaking. As someone else said I’m ashamed to say you’ve seen more of my country than me and I’m nearly twice your age. Not for lack of trying. So I live vicariously through your travels. Rock on.

Hi Richard, yess we do love how quiet it is in winter here and we have had a mild winter to be honest! Hey don't be ashamed Im sure there's plenty of places I haven't explored back in Cornwall. Thank you for watching and it's great to have you vicariously on our travels with us!
