Call the Midwife is one of my favorite shows, the stories, the characters, the costumes and (most importantly) the knitwear! Today, I'm reacting to some of the knitwear I found in the second season of call the midwife as I think we all enjoyed looking into season 1 last time!

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

I crocheted a shawl for my mom the spring before she died. She wore it a lot as she was sick. I was her caregiver. When passed away that year, 2022, we laid the shawl over the casket instead of flowers and now have it and wear it. I gave her hugs with the shawl and now when I need a hug from my mom I have the shawl.

It’s so heartwarming to me that Call the Midwife resonates so much with so many people all over the world. At its heart it’s a show about the value of (traditionally) women’s work, not just in nursing and midwifery but in all the small domestic labours too. It champions the often under appreciated contribution of our mothers, grandmothers and aunts but isn’t afraid to detail all the many hardships they also faced. The fact the costume team include so many knitwear examples just reiterates the message. Caring for people is not just about being there in life’s big moments, its about the small everyday things like hand knit socks and granny square blankets ❤️

I was born in 1954, so, as a little girl, a lot of my clothes were hand-knitted, such as white tights, singlets, knickers worn on top of your normal underpants to keep you warm in the spring, lacy socks, bonnets and of course, pullovers and cardigans, lacy and plain. Most of these garments were knitted by my mother and grandmother, all in a very fine yarn (4ply). I still knit a lot… and I play June’s Journey everyday!

I love this series on the Call The Midwife knits. Please continue it. I grew up in near the area of London where the series is set, I remember people wearing similar knits, and I knitted many baby layettes myself for family and friends when I was was in my teens and twenties. Your series and how observant you are about the knits really enhances my enjoyment and appreciation of the series. I am so sorry for your losses. It was very brave of you to speak about them. My condolences to you.

I was born in England in the early 60s; a lot of the hand knits seen in this program remind me of clothes my three sisters and I wore. Both our grandmothers knitted, as well as an auntie who had just one daughter a year older than my eldest sister, so she was constantly sending us hand knits her daughter had outgrown, and everything was made of wool then so they lasted a long time and were passed down from one sibling to another. We had a red hooded jumpsuit made by one of our grandmas that all four of us wore as babies and I have photos of all four of us wearing it; I really wish my mother had kept it now.

I made a quilt for a cousin going through chemo. He enjoyed the quilt for about 4 days before he unexpectedly passed. I was glad I could share some love with him and give his physical body some warmth. Even for just a few days. It is emotional to share this kindness and love for other people. Hugs.

Thank you for continuing the series! The crochet blanket got to me too - in both ways! "If Sister Monica Joan and the nurses were knitting all those squares - where did those quite obviously crocheted granny squares come from?". Also the whole act of putting it together. Not just the fact that it was for one of their own, but the comfort of doing what can be a repetitive task together. It was the perfect expression of united grief/sadness.
@KathyPrendergast-cu5ci
@KathyPrendergast-cu5ci 3 месяца назад
Yes, that was the only inconsistency that annoyed me about that otherwise beautiful scene, being both a knitter and crocheter. I was like, wait, where did all those crochet granny squares come from, when they were all knitting squares for that blanket?😂 I've made a few granny square blankets and know how much work it takes weaving in all those loose ends and stitching them all together (the part of the process I absolutely hate!), so it was nice seeing it done as a collaborative effort, a true labour of love.

My deepest condolences for your losses. The act of knitting or crocheting can be so meditative and calming. And when the finished product is meant to be a gift for a loved one, we can pour all of our care and love into every stitch. It provides comfort for both the maker and the recipient. Please do continue exploring the knitting on Call the Midwife. It's such a wonderful, heartwarming show.

I'm so sorry for your losses. We lost my Aunt and my sister 10 days apart. I honestly don't know how my mother survived that. Hugs and love to you. And my Aunt had been knitting a sweater for my Uncle but had not finished it. A Norwegian ski sweater. I had knitted several of them, and was asked to finish it. And I did. It was the last gift from me to my Aunt, and it was important to my Uncle as her last gift to him. I had forgotten this until this video, and thank you for sharing this with us.

One super cool show to look for is on PBS Passport. It is called Crimes of Passion. It is Swedish and set in the 50's. Kind of Agatha Christi light. Whether you like the show is one thing, but wow, the fashions are fabulous. Lots of beautiful knits. I think that on episode 6 the main character is wearing a Bohus sweater. Worth checking out for great inspiration. Love these discussions of knits in tv shows.

Set in sleeves vs raglan. As you say, drop shoulder is different, as is the dolman sleeve. Yes, "layette" is the word for those sets. While I love vintage and historical knitting I deplore a lot of the names for baby garments, "bootees", "matinee jackets", etc.

I've really enjoyed these videos on Call The Midwife, even though I'm primarily a crocheter rather than a knitter. I hope you continue this series. And I am so sorry for your recent losses. I have also recently been working on a series of items for sick loved ones. I crocheted a Christmas blanket for my Mom who is in an Alzheimer's care facility in another state, and in January made 2 more blankets for family members who are undergoing chemo in other parts of the country. I like to think of them as virtual hugs, since I can't be there.

The blanket baby Raymond is wrapped up in has a pattern. It's been my go to baby gift, including my own grandchildren, since 2013. I knit my grandmother socks and a shawl since she was always cold. I got them back after she passed. They are treasured because they were hers and she loved them.

Catching up on some older videos, and I am so sorry for the loss of your loved ones. I'm so glad you were able to get the hand-knit items to them during their treatments as I know it was very meaningful for them and for you as well. I once made a hand-tied fleece blanket for an aunt in the hospital (they're super easy and you can make one in a couple hours) but didn't get it out to her fast enough, and she passed as it was mid-transit. My cousin -- her daughter -- loved it, though, so that brought me comfort. Hope you are holding up okay and again, my condolences on your losses. 💗💗

Knitting and crocheting IS an act of love. I'm sorry for your loss, but it's lovely to know you got to transmit your love with something you did for them❤ Btw knitting for other people's kids is also an act of love, not only for the cuteness factor but because when you first have a baby you don't get much time to think about their clothes, it's lovely to get something for them, something you know the other person took time and effort to do... when you say you'd knit hundreds of things for babies, it's true! My mom is constantly knitting for babies, firstly for my nephews and now for my daughter; she used to knit several a month when my LO was super little, and still now that she's 3 years old, she knits around 1 every month. It goes so fast even when you use fingering weight yarn...I'm currently knitting a colorwork sweater for her and in 2 days I'm already half done with the top part.

Sorry for your losses. I am back in posession of a blanket I made a friend as a thank-you gift for being a bridesmaid at my wedding, made to fold up as a lap blanket for her wheelchair or unfold if she wanted a blanket for other uses... After her passing, her parents gave it back to me and I stitched her name and birth/death dates into the edge. Though someday, now that I have a better understanding of embroidery, I could redo it, it's kind of atrocious. Or maybe just add it again to all the other edges as the years go by so I can see my own progress, she'd have approved, having been a crsss stitcher and avid knitter herself. This was the first time I'd tried a double blanket (I don't know what to call it, I can't have invented it but I've never seen anything else like it, start like yo're doing a triple crochet blanket where you triple, then chain then triple, then when that's as long as you want it, you make a new chain the same length in a different colour and weave that in and out of the ladder you've produced with the first colour, then do a second row of triple-chain repeats on the second colour, then for the rest of the blanket, you alternate back and forth one colour at a time so you've got two separate blankets but they're intertwined. Comes out striped with the two colours and nice and squishy and very insulating if it's between any two other layers. My pandemic project was the same thing only for a queen sized bed and in many colours, it's on the bed right now :) I started crocheting while my dad was in hospital, making baby blankets for friends to keep myself sane while we waited around for news of test results etc. He passed away in 2002, so crocheting always has a little piece of him for me too.

My great grandma says that zippers in sweaters are a sign of an oops in sizing, gauge etc. The only time she put a zipper in a sweater is when the recipient passed before she could finish it and she did her best to resize it for a younger sibling of theirs. Had to ask my great gram about this cuz a zipper in a sweater struck me as so very strange! Cheers
