Viserys always complains about keeping the family together and not in-fighting, but it is him at every critical point of the story that sows division within his House. Viserys marries his daughters best-friend while Rhaenyra is still mourning her mother, he neglects his children with Alicent (who could be rival claimant's to the throne), he neglects training Rhaenyra in the politics of Westeros and allows her to be isolated on Dragonstone away from her the other half of the family, he allows Daemon to almost do whatever the fuck he wants (even if it could undermine their power as a House) and now his 2nd born son has been maimed but he denies Alicent or Aemmond the chance to get justice. Think about what Aemmond and Aegon are seeing: our father has just threatened to kill anyone who speaks the truth about Rhaenyra's sons (even though that lie could threaten ALL of their lives) AND he's chosen to protect Rhaenyra's lies rather than get justice for his son AND their mother. Viserys has done little to nothing to build trust, respect and love amongst his family. So in a situation where some High Lords and smallfolk disagree about who should be heir, Viserys, by not uniting the House of the Dragon, is creating a chance for ambitious people in Westeros to trigger war.

@@Adanu191 I strongly disagree and the text of F&B + ASOIAF proves the opposite. Power is never absolute and never unconditional in Westeros. All the Kings of Westeros who thought they could rule without the respect and loyalty of their subjects and vassals ended up losing power or starting wars - Maegor thought he was above tradition and duty, and he ended up being usurped. As King or Queen, you need Lords to gather taxes, adjudicate and enforce the law, to raise armies. You need the Smallfolk for economic and agricultural production. You need he faith to legitimize you and the maestors for mass communication. Aegon The Conqueror understood this and it's why he spent so much time after the conquest endearing himself to high lords and Smallfolk and the faith. Even dragon lords cannot rule sustainably with fear alone

Aemond didn't do anything wrong by claiming Vhagar. Vhagar doesn't belong to anyone. Her bond was with Laena and Laena only. So as much as Rhaena and Baela may have felt tied to Vhagar through their mother, it is unlikely that Vhagar felt the same connection with them. They are kids, so perhaps they didn't understand this, but as watchers of the show, we should use our knowledge that they lack to recognize truth instead of just standing by whatever side we favor says. Aemond claiming Vhagar was something he had just as much right to do as any other Targaryen. Rhaena doesn't get "dibs" just because Laena was her mother. She has the right to not be ready and to grieve, but she doesn't have the right to demand or expect other people put her and her feelings and time ahead of their own. A Targaryen Prince has been bullied and mocked for years for not having a dragon, he was so desperate he'd even gone into the dragonpit trying to claim one, only to almost be killed. Of course when the opportunity arose to claim Vhagar, the legendary and largest dragon since Balerion, he was going to do it. And I think it's silly that people act like he just went to claim her at night to be sneaky. He obviously did it at night because that was the first opportunity he had to actually do so. Chances were, he and his family were leaving back to King's Landing the next day, so how much time did he really have? It made sense he'd do it as soon as the funeral was over and he could finally get away and be alone. Was he being rude when he told Rhaena "maybe find a pig to ride?" Yeah, I think so. He didn't have to say that, but to me that was his worst offense. Everything else he did up until that point was nothing to attack him over.

I think one of the beauties of these series is the fact that in this fantasy world the characters are "real". As in most characters are both good and bad, juvenile at times and adults other times, stupid some times and smart others. That's why I can see Alicent's side and I can see Rhenera's side too. Both have done dumb stuff and made mistakes. Deamon too, he does cool and heart warming stuff and then "jerk" stuff too.

It’s always funny to me that people find Alicent dramatic during the Aemond eye loss deal - is she in the wrong to go after Luke, totally. But her baby has been agonizingly, permanently mutilated and her husband, the man who forced himself on her for 10+ years and shows total disinterest in their children, responds with “wow, an eye, that sucks for” *checks writing on hand* “almond?” Imagine if Rhaenyra had lost an eye.

What I took from Alicent's Perspective of her Feud with Rhaenyra is Complex, much more beyond a "she gets to do what I cant, Im jealous". For starters, since the first episodes, she has always been the religious type, courtesy of her family roots as a member of House Hightower (the faith of the seven used to be based there before the Targaryen Monarchy) which was established in that scene where she and Rhaenyra talk in a sept with all the candles, when young. The faith of the seven shuns adultery, so in part it conflicts with her beliefs. Then we got the dad, who has veen pushing her to the position she is now. Even till the end, he was pushing her to convince the king to make her first born son as heir, to which she refused out of duty to her husband and that friendship she used to have with Rhaenyra. However, once she finds out that even the Princess can lie to her (when Criston Cole confessed to having intimacy with her, also notice how Alicent vouched for her old friend, saying something along the lines of "she told me she remains a maiden", aka: she told me she is still a virgin. So she understood that, despite the question kinda being more specific to her uncle). You can see how that trust mixed with Otto's last venom words about praying for Rhaenyra's mercy towards her and her kids. Finally, even tho Viserys did name Rhaenyra his heir, Tradition did dictate first born sons usually inherit. Not only that, the basis for Viserys becoming king in the first place was the direct consequence of the very first scene at harrenhal, where succession between him and Rhaena "the queen that never was" was being decided. That precedent kinda established men doninance in succession, or at the very least suggested a similar council had to occur to confirm Rhaenyra's succession. You can see that in the episode of the hunt, where the Lannister Lord slipped his words. So realistically, Rhaenyra as queen would have a constant threat in the form of her brothers. Any fuck up on her part could very easily spark a civil war to put any of them on the throne, threats that could only end one way... If they convenietly didnt exist anymore. Once you realize that, once you add in the loss of trust, plus the conflict of morality that the princess clearly doesnt care for, you can see how in Alicent's mind, its now a do or die for her and her children to somehow get Rhaenyra disinherited so that her son can be king, spare all their lives and prevent a civil war.
@laza0202
@laza0202 4 месяца назад
Lol it's not complex just admit it alicent after Otto is 2nd person responsible for that civil war that's gonna come, without them this war wouldn't happen, she's pathetic jealous fake friend trash, like in ep 9 she told her father I've been ur puppet,after all this time realized this cuz she's stupid, yet she obeys him & listens to him & goes along aegon's crowning like he wanted, her children wouldn't be in danger she knows it, what's the show try to tell me her goal is anyway? Wtf? Complete victimization not works for me, her character is so inconsistent,
@cassandramcbride7007
@cassandramcbride7007 3 месяца назад
The issue is that people tend to be bias, and dont understand Alicent. Understanding her character and what she is doing doesnt mean accepting or justifying... but seeing the other side. This scene takes that perfectly. Viserys didnt care about his own son losing a eye, and was more concern with grandsons been call bastards. Obvious taking a eye was too much, but he could had find another way to fix this matter. And he didnt do. In Alicent prespective, she sees this as "Rhaenyra could kill them, that the king was ok"... Theres so many other things that people do not want to see her presprective or understanding why she acts like this

Not by removing eyes (obviously), but by like - confine them to their chambers, give them some chore, extra learning, making them apologize to each other, at the very least scold them, anything really (Btw I mean Aemond too, even if it could be argued that he had his consequence) Also punish the Kinsguard and the other guards, because don't let me get started on how ridiculous it is that 5 royal children (the seacond, third and sixth/seventh in line for the Throne amongs them!) could sneak out and have a fight without the guards finding them on time (like catch them right at the doors of their chambers, where there should be guards btw). They not only placed the kids in danger, they also made the royal family look weak and vulnerable. What Vizzy did was shout about family some and then basically sent everyone to bed. This may be the greatest of all Viserys’ sins. It cannot be overstated how important it is for powerful families in Westeros to maintain close, or at least amicable, relationships. It is impossible, for example, to imagine Ned Stark’s children, despite the many different paths they take in life, waging vicious wars against one another. The Stark siblings all love, or at least feel some affection towards, each other. Viserys’ kids and grandkids, on the other hand, mostly hate each other. When they aren’t trading barbs at dinner, they’re slicing each other’s eyeballs. Viserys neglected the children he had with Alicent, binding them almost entirely to their mother. Later in life, Viserys seemed to forget that he even had children other than Rhaenyra. His total inability to get his own house in order, over a span of many years, is ultimately the biggest reason the realm will be torn asunder. Daemon was all right when he said that Viserys was weak.

Confirmation bias is such an intersting phenomenon. Most who watch the show on first take see Aemond as the instigator. 1. Aegon, Jaece and his brother actually picked on Aemond first with the pig thing. They knew he wanted a dragon. 2. While yes, he was shitty with how he wasrunning his mouth after the 2 girls mom just died....but claiming the dragon was not against the rules or anything. The Dragons take who they choose, there was no asdurance that the girls could tame Vaygar. To even try was very dangerous and any one of them could have been killed. 3. The girl struck first....he defended himself after the 3 of them started jumping him. 4. He picks up the rock because hes outnumbered...but its pretty obvious a deterent to keep them at bay. Yet he does keep shooting his mouth off and little homie pulls a knife. That escalated the whole thing. 5. Do yall hear yourselves when you gloat about the Kings favoritism over his first born daughter? That is not GOOD! Aemond and Aegon are his sons too and he doesn't really act like it. Allicent at that point was rational in her fury as a mother. Now of vourse no one wants to maime a child, but Vicerys doesnt even scold The Blacks, its ridiculous. This is why Otto said what he said and why the Greens end up foing what they do.
@cherryfreckle
@cherryfreckle 4 месяца назад
It is completely reasonable for Allicent to be upset, but her as a grown adult requesting for a child's eye to be taken is completely crossing the line. The fight between Aemond and the others was between CHILDREN, therefore to ask for such a punishment is too extreme. They were all being immature but unfortunately it escalated too far. As children, it's whether they truly knew any better though. You can defend Aemond as much as you want, but I think it was obvious he was going to use the rock to murder. Just look at how he grows up to be. He always had that side in him. But back to Allicent, it's sometimes hard to take her seriously as her jealousy towards Rhaenyra is the cause of a lot of her actions. If it was someone else's child who injured Aemond, would she request the same punishment? Most likely not.

I also wanted to point out that in episode 6, Alicent did say that the king knows in conversation with Criston. Also, the Greens are the name of Alicent's faction, since she's always wearing Green, which is the colour of House Hightower (in wartime). Calling Alicent a psycho... If your kid lost an eye over an insult, I'm sure you'll be as angry as her. Hypocrisy as its finest ! I'm not saying she was right to demand Lucerys eye, obviously it's wrong. But you don't seem to understand her character at all. Viserys is a terrible father to her children, and Rhaenyra is a spoiled brat who does anything she wants without thinking of the consequences.

@@SuzySteejo Because it's unfair. Aemond lost an eye, and Lucerys will not receive any punishment. I'm talking about a fair punishment that does not involve hurting him of course (for example, making him a squirre far from dragonstone for several months, or forbidding him to fly his dragon for some times, things like this) But no, there is litteraly ZERO consequences for cutting Aemond's eye. Viserys will never do anything against his favorite and only child. It proves Alicent that Rhaenyra can do whatever she wants, her sons and her will never be punished. It also proves Alicent that her children may be in danger, because Viserys will not do anything to protect them. Viserys just did exactly what Otto have been saying Alicent for years. If her son can lost an eye without any consequences, what will it be next, an arm ? A leg ? His life ? The kids also understand know that their mother was right, they are in danger. Moreover, Rhaenyra wanted Aemond to be tortured. "To question sharply" someone in this universe equals to torture, you can look at it on the internet. Rhaenyra wanting to torture a child who had just lost an eye. She's a total psycho too then.

IMO, the author of this series and of GOT is repeatedly making a point that a “legitimate” right to rule is absurd because it’s almost always based on assumptions. The hair is the correct color, so everyone assumes legitimate birth. But throughout history, how often has an illegitimate child inherited a throne and nobody knew? And what difference did it make?

That’s true but this is during a time where everyone, including most kings bow down to the religion and follow its rules. Bastards are said to be bad so everyone treats them like the plague which is similar to our own views on bastards in the real world. Royalty can have bastards they just aren’t allowed to put them on the throne. That’s the law Westeros has followed since the age of Heros since the north and old gods have similar views.

Yes, GRRM pokes holes in the whole notion of monarchy and divine rights in his writings. The idea that the gods anoint certain people to rule is not only absurd in itself, the whole idea of the gods themselves is equally absurd since there are as many gods as there are peoples in the world.

Absolute primogeniture instead of male primogeniture wouldn't help Velaryons, as in show Laena was younger than Laenor - that means that Laenor's (legal) children inherit ahead of Laena's. As Luke and Joff are recognized Velaryons, they inherit ahead of any children Laena's had. It has nothing to do with their gender. If Luke and Joff were girls, they would still inherit Driftmark ahead of Laena's kids.

I don't think Alicent's behavior is too crazy. She is a mother whose kid was maimed by the guilty party who is in the room. Shock and outrage do such things to mothers. But... All of a sudden the talk in the room goes away from punitive measures for assaulting each other to injury...to simply having an intense conversation about parentage. At the end of that scene the only one man enough to stand up and make concessions to end the fight between mothers was Aemond Targaryan, the one who lost an eye. I've gone round and round on this with others a long time ago but Rhaenyra and her kids get away with a lot simply because Viserys has a blind spot for her regarding justice. If it was anyone else, she would have been hanged and her kids banished or put to the sword for fathering bastards and lying to king and realm about it. That is the world they live in. None of the drama in this show would even happen if Rhaenyra hadn't acted like a selfish rich girl her entire life disregarding the laws of royalty. I find it weird that Alicent, who is a dutiful daughter, wife, and mother is painted as the bad guy and Rhaenyra, who instigates every bad thing in this show, is considered a the good guy. This binary thinking from fans, as proved here, still shocks me. This is the "Game of Thrones" universe. There are no good or bad guys. Just flawed people.

Before they knew who he really was the lords of the North made Jon Snow who they thought was a bastard the King of the North over his true born daughter Sansa. The question is who will be the better ruler. Also never forget the only reason Rhaenyra is the heir is because Otto push for her to get it over Daemon. His rivalry with Daemon caused this.

This is officially where the Green and Black teams started to formulate. The whole goal of the Greens was to discredit Rhaenyra since she is immature, reckless, and she is rebellious. She is impulsive like her uncle, not just discrediting her because of her actions as the heir to the throne but also because of her gender. Now, people won't say that it's not because of her gender; it's primarily because of her behavior, but that's not true, as we've seen throughout Game of Thrones. Gender is always brought in, whether subtle or obvious, but trying to sway public opinion against Rhaenyra is the wrong thing to do, Especially if it's going against the King's royal decree. Rhaenyra's claim has always been challenged since the day she was named the heir, and since Aegon’s birth it is under their custom that the heir of the Iron Throne resides on Dragonstone until the King passes away. This is also where they messed up her character. She went to Dragonstone, and as you can see, she has no supporters, whereas her brother Aegon has a lot of support. Viserys could already see that his family was being distant from each other. Regarding Aemond’s eye, both sides are wrong nobody is right. Aemond was wrong for bullying the girls when they did nothing to him, and honestly, in my opinion, he should not have insulted his nephew's birth status. Even though it is true, saying it over and over again to torment them is wrong, and the girls are wrong. The boys are wrong. Aemond was struck first, but he picked up a rock and was going to use it when Jace got knocked to the ground, which is a sign of having a weapon in someone's hand. If he had dropped the knife and just walked away, he would have had his eye intact.

How Dragons are claimed: The Royal family has eggs placed in cribs, and sometimes those eggs hatch, and the dragon gets claimed by the newborn. They both grow up together. Rhaenyra and Syrax (her dragon) both grew up together. Lucaerys and Jace (her kids) were the same. Aegon II and Haelena (Alicent kids) were the same. And I think Baela (one of Daemon's daughters had an egg hatched as well). Almond and the other sister never had their eggs hatch. So, the other way is to claim an unclaimed dragon (dragons w/o riders... thus happens when the rider dies. Like Viserys was the last rider on Balerion, the black dread. And Laena had this same problem until she later claimed Vaeghar). The story this is being adopted from has a lot more unclaimed dragons. There were supposed to be 18 dragons on the show, just between the kids and the adults. Season 2 is supposed to show a lot more unclaimed dragons. And there is a cool story of how some of them got claimed to create an advantage in the numbers game. All I will say. I enjoy your reaction, but take some notes. It will help you remember stuff. I find myself remembering more when I write stuff down.

A lot of issues I have around the timing of things is mainly due to the time skip restriction that the show has. Like, I'm sure Ser Criston and Ser Harwin would have come to heads much sooner than was shown, and same with Alicent's worries about her children's safety. But they try to condense life over long periods into just snippets of time, making things that probably happened very gradually seem a bit random and rushed. I think whether or not people listen to intros and outros depends on the day, the show and the episode. I enjoy people speculating on certain shows and to go through what they got from the episode. But not on all shows. Sometimes I just want to see the reaction to certain scenes. Sometimes I am in the mood to just listen to some scots speak about random stuff. Sometimes I can't be bothered or don't have the time. As long as the intro animation/music thingy is no longer than 12 sec; it doesn't bother me. If someone has something major going on like they are getting married or having a child or just lost some relative (anything that might emotionally play into an episode), it is nice to hear about it.

I love this scene between Alicent and Rhaenyra conversation. Clearly we could see that Rhaenyra did want Alicent to loose her head, to look bad. Alicent was so tired of trying to be what she was told and educated to be. The issue is that Viserys could seek justice in another way, yet, he only cared about grandsons been call bastards, while his own son that lost a eye, he simple treated as some kids quarel. One lost an eye, is just kids stuff, but calling bastard that is something to be discuss. Obvious for alicent was a confirmation, that whatever happens to her sons, the king doesnt care, so they were in danger like Otto said. Its evident that a mother will protect their own children, Rhaenyra was doing for her children and Alicent was doing for hers.

SO DRAGON FACT. Steejo is right about not all Targaryens having dragons because of the hatching problem. As of right now, Rhaenyra, Laenor and Rhaenyra's children are the only ones whose "cradle eggs" ( as they call it) hatched. Everyone else, so Daemon, Rhaenys, Alicent's children and even Viserys had to claim an already living dragon. ANOTHER DRAGON FACT. Daemon's dragon Caraxes originally belonged to his uncle, Prince Aemon Targaryen, the father of Rhaenys (The Queen who never was). AND Vhagar (Laena & now Aemond's dragon) is a conquest dragon originally belonging to one of the conqueror's Queen Visenya and is currently the oldest and biggest dragon. After Queen Visenya, Vhagar was later claimed by Baelon Targaryen, Daemon and Viserys's father. Which basically means these two brothers (Baelon and Aemon) probably flew their dragons together all the time, which means the dragons were like buddies. Then Daemon claimed Caraxes and Laena claimed Vhagar so the dragons flew together once again. Then now Laena died and Vhagar and Caraxes are on opposing teams :( Sorry I just care about the dragon friendships more than this toxic family lol.

It's fair to have different perspectives on characters in a show. I mean it's obvious a lot of personal factors go into that how we see certain characters. Let's be honest, we all don't have the same values in life and that's fine. Some people have a very strict sense of duty, others are more chaotic and want to be more free and less restricted. Alicent and Rheynera have very, very different characters and a very different outlook on life. It's not easy to have a close relation to someone you have very little in common. Often times these kind of relationships don't last for ever, although they certainly can if you can accept different opinions and values. Personally I feel more sympathy for Alicent than Rheynera, but I know that's a minority position. Could be that she is more my type and I like her sense of duty. That's rare nowadays but of course she also has her flaws. She is a very conflicted person that feels a lot of bitterness. That she has in common with Rheynera. HOTD is certainly a very interesting show if you like the psycholgy and understand humans and what motivates and drives them and how they pursue their role in society.

Do people really figure that having a knife cut though all your layers of skin, your peritoneum, your omentum, and your contracting uterus-all while awake with no anesthesia-is a moral obligation? Just so the fetus may or may not live? Did the first episode not show how barbaric that procedure is when divorced from modern medicine? Perhaps many people are lucky enough to have never been in the kind of physical pain that makes you wish you were dead.

I enjoy your comments on the commenters and being reactors in general....the yin and yang and tension between how lame people are and obviously wanting viewers. Hope you continue to not take lame, snarky know-it-all comments too serious and keep having fun. (Also, I'm a divorce attorney in the US and I don't see you guys getting divorced- I mean no one can predict the future in such a thing but I guess some lamo armchair psychologists were telling you they saw signs awhile back, but they are full of BS and projecting their lameness upon you).

51:04 I like to think that since the dagger drank Targaryan's blood it's fire to the Night King a few centuries later.

In the book the fact that Rhaenyra's children are bastards and thus illegitimate is not as clear cut obvious. But since its such a central part of the story they made it so glaringly obvious that the obtuseness of the King becomes almost silly. eg 48:15 the high angle shot showing all the white hair and ..yeah.

In the book, the boys' bastardy is obvious too. Rhaenys has black hair because her mother was Baratheon, but she has the violet eyes of the Targaryens. Jace, Luke and Joffrey have brown hair and eyes and a flat nose, while their parents have silver hair, violet eyes and an aquiline nose. It becomes more obvious when compared to Laena and Daemon's daughters.

Thank you. When people bring this up I wonder if they gloss over the part that they look nothing like a targ or a baratheon. The seed is strong is use in GOT because of harwin Strong and the boys.

@@fabricio_borges In the books at least there is excuses for the obtuseness of those involved. eg Rhaenys Baratheon bloodline. In the TV show they made the Velaryon's black removing any pretense of her children being legit to anyone with eyes.

@@zzzkoszzzbut it's obvious all the same, especially comparing it to the daughters of Daemon and Laena and, later, the sons of Rhaenyra and Daemon. The proportion is the same. Two blonde people with violet eyes having children: Daemon and Laena = 2 blonde daughters with violet eyes. Daemon and Rhaenyra= two blond children with violet eyes. Rhaenyra and Laenor= 3 children with brown hair and eyes and flat noses?

The comparison between what Alicent and Dany is absolutely ridiculous. The situation are not even close to the same things.

@@drrohanjacob5343 Oh dear you Dany stans make me giggle every single time 😆 Your "Queen" is easily the most hypocritical character on the show, and that does tend to make a character a bit insufferable. She holds everyone else to some high moral standard, but is oblivious when she herself dips under her own moral standard. She executes others for things she literally does (or will do later.) Executes/imprisons innocent people, forced marriage for political gain, big talker about how its immoral/wrong to force people to serve, then forces people to serve her, etc. On top of it - she creates this fiction about how Destiny has made her the Chosen One, which further perpetuates her delusions to the point where they eventually implode and crumble down upon her... such a growing god complex really became an issue for her in Westeros.

As for Helaena and the millipede, when she says the last part "has no legs", I think she's talking about Bran. Helaena's the Luna Lovegood/Sybil Trelawney of this show. As for Alicent, her father has made her paranoid, she definitely resents how Rhaenyra flaunts the rules, and she's legit pissed that the succession as it stands would be running through a bastard, rather than a legitimate heir.
