Being the only cosplayer in a Mexican family kinda sucks. My family thinks that what I do is just a phase. I put a lot of work into my cosplays and sometimes my family thinks it a Waste of time and money. I may get bullied for cosplaying but I try to stay positive no matter what!

When i started dressing alternative my family hated it. I remember my dad disliked my black hair so he made me bleach it. Jokes on him. My hair is super dark brown now. My grandpa told me not to go over to his house wearing the clothes i wore. My sister was all for it because she was my inspiration. My boyfriend was all for it. He is the only one all for it ATM. My mom hates everything I like, especially my music. She sometimes teases me about always being quiet and reserved, and does absolutely nothing to help my social anxiety. She also tells me to cut my hair everyday even though it's not that long and it's really annoying. So it's good to see your family is supportive.

So I've been emo for like 6 months to a year by now, and I barely ever really mention it with my parents or any family members. My mum is the most tolerant, she lets me play my music. My dad has no interest in anything emo, being a man who grew up in the rock & roll era that he never seems to let go of. My siblings aren't supportive but let me be me. My 20 year old sister just loves to drag me solely bc I'm "emo" and my two brothers just don't care.

My parents were very supportive. My dad thought I looked awesome and cool and my mom loved going shopping with me to alternative/goth stores. She thought it was so fun and the clothes were beautiful. I was really lucky.

My story is long and complicated, I started becoming alternative at 7 and I'm 21... but I think the best way to explain how my parents feel about it is simple; they aren't the biggest fans, I am the exact opposite of everything they think and believe about what a person, especially a woman, should be. They've never been outright negative but I've always known they aren't the happiest with my choice because they keep gently encouraging me towards one thing or another that I'm just not about. That being said, they would never to stop me from being who I am. They love me despite all the "crazy creepy stuff you (I) do."

Ultimately, I get the feeling that right now I'm just a big ol' disappointment. You know... I had potential and I'm not living up to their idea of my potential.

I'm very alternative as you would say, i frequently color my hair, i have a lot of piercings, & on top of that I'm gay, my mum has over time become not bothered by it. Other members in my family don't really get it, but that's expected.

Richie, I am 60 yrs old, I think you are doing great and I enjoy your voice when you sing. When I was in my 20s I lived in California and ran the number one rock and blues nightclub in the south bay. My dad was always telling me to get a real job, even though I was making as much as him, as union electrician. Even at my age now he is still telling me to get a real job. As far as my "family", when I had any, it was a lot of rolling eyes, heavy sighs, disapproving looks, never actually saying I was dressed in a "too revealing manner" instead, they'd actually pull my top up and my skirt down, as if it could magically transform my outfit into something different, when all it did was make me feel sad, bad and angry with them. I got so many statements and questions like: "Why do you do your makeup like that?" and "Why do you dress like that?! Don't you think you should CHANGE? We're going to a WEDDING/funeral/dinner/graduation/baby shower/grocery store?!" So, yeah. 😑Never any acceptance, approval, support etc. I am an artist/performer too, have had various projects and performances that have included experimental, esoteric, performance art, slam poetry, being lead singer and the house band for a lesbian club "all girl rock cover band" to leading Kirtan in a "New Age meets electronica and Hindustani Traditional Sanskrit Chanting"...and there is more...ONE specific family member would occasionally come to "see" me at select performances-only once per group, and would always leave early- and her ONLY comment EVER was "Well, you like being part of things." 😑 It felt like she only came to my events to gather more "reasons" in HER mind why she should JUDGE ME. 😑 Suffice it to say NO ONE approved of my "tastefully nude" art modeling (nothing more explicit than pin-up girl style or Greek Statuary). Even when photos of me won multiple international awards and sold for a LOT of money as originals and the ONLY copy being sold, they thought I was "disgusting" and refused to even LOOK at it, in fact, when finding a box full of memorabilia from said performances it was THROWN OUT. I could go on and on; this is already to long, however, YOU ASKED, Richie!!! 💀🌈💀

I love that your family is supportive. My family thought and still thinks that I went through a "dark phase" in high school. In reality I just dress "normal" and leave my hair a natural color to keep everyone off my case. I have Bipolar Disorder and when they start harping on my fashion choices it's very triggering, so I just look the way they want me too rather than the way I want because in the end it's just better for my mental health

My 24 year old daughter said she is glad that I don't wear track bottoms and trainers and always take pride in how I dress. So basically my family love me as I am.....just like yours love you.
