In this conversation, New York Times bestselling author Min Jin Lee speaks about her novel, Pachinko, a sprawling historical saga that follows four generations of a Korean immigrant family in 20th century Japan. Expanding on questions of family and identity from her novel as well as her own experiences as an Asian-American, she will examine the intricacies of being a perceived outsider and the power of fiction in bridging cultures.

Awesome interview. I love listening to Minjin Lee. I bought the books for my kids who are also Korean American with less access to Korean history. Her interviews and books inspire my kids and me to be proud of who we are as we are. Hope to meet her soon

I love the way Minjin mentioned about the universalism of discrimination. On the surface, it seems to happen to some specific group called minority such as race, expats, lgbt, religion or women(not a minority) and so on. But without empathy, it can happen to everyone. Think about the Sewol ferry. Those who were sacrificed by systematical failure of government were harshly discriminated for 6 years. At that time, some journalists pointed out it happened because of the lack of empathy. If human empathy is erased systematically because of all the competition and aim for the growth, any person in majority can also fall into the situation of discrimination. I think that is the power of writers and great books. They tell the personal story, but make the story personal to every readers. Great interview again!

A very nice talk. The extent of historical inaccuracies and untruths fed to young minds is mind-blowing indeed, a stark contrast to how Germany had handled their war crimes. It can be improved with effort and... 27:48 we can start by tweeting some photos of the Yasukuni shrine signage claiming that USA had started WWII.
