I wanted to watch the exchange as I'm about to read Pachinko and I felt it interesting to learn more about its author. What I did not expect was to be touched that deeply by this intelligent, funny, resilient woman, and feel that deep of a kinship. I am not Korean, nor Asian either, and not even American. But I am a daughter of hardworking immigrants, I lived in a humble household, and have made a good life for myself through the early understanding that education was key. What resonated so strongly was the end of the interview, because yes, I carry my parents with me. They are, in no small amount, the makers of my success in that they supported me so I could study and trusted me to find my path, even as they didn't understand it. So yes, they are with me, a constant reminder, even as things weren't always moonlight and roses between us, that I am the product of their education, that there's this constant sense of thankfulness towards them. My parents battles as immigrants, internal or otherwise, made me strong, empathetic and deeply understanding of the cultural sense of belonging and differences. I loved the insight into the Korean perspective of education, of what education should be. It has so many layers, historical, cultural, societal, that we, as Westerners, with our degree-of-separation understanding, aren't legitimately abilitated to comment upon. I'm looking forward to more such exchanges. Thank you.

Respect. I had two friends in high school 1983. Ikso Kim and sana. They both took their lives because they couldn’t meet their parents standards.. My parents were happy if, I received a C. I am 55 now and lived such a great life. Mexicano
