It's sounds like that girl may be seriously insecure about something within herself and even at the least taught this horrible homophobia. Maybe she is secretly ashamed of being able to like someone who is considered lesbian or maybe she can see herself in you and she doesn't like that. Not any sane person, so I know it’s hard and it hurts, but she is clearly not right in the head so try not to let her words get to you to much. That lady is so gross, I'm glad you didn't react the way she wanted and that your friend stood up for you! You literally didn't do anything, no one deserves to be treated that way. While I'm not gay (I may be bi but I'm in a straight relationship & haven't talked about it), I try to call people out when they say stuff like that. Sometimes there's no one around that's LGBTQ+ (at least that I'm aware of), but I make sure to say something because even if it isn't directly aimed at a person it's still disgusting behaviour. Very sorry this happened to you, it brings back a lot of memories. I actually grew up in the same city (Brisbane) and was a teenager and going out clubbing in the late 90s, and even in the Valley where things were a lot more open and alternative, there were some very scary situations. It was always a choice whether to be open or not at work or even with certain friends, because the consequences could be very frightening. Not all that long ago, but it was a very different time, and I’m glad that so many more people are able to live openly now, it used to sometimes be very scary in a very real way on nights out, particularly waiting for taxis home etc., making sure not to draw attention etc. So many good memories and good people too, who did a lot of work to make things safer for future generations, but hate still remains and is a very real thing.

It's a million times worse than being shouted at on the street during pride march - which of course is equally wrong, but also less personal.
