@dogg-paws the console industry is built around people upgrading every 6-10 years, so devs don't have to worry about more than 2 consoles per brand. If devs had to deal with 8 different versions of the ps6, games would suffer.
What we need is to downscale the games to make development sustainable again. But we need to stop this weird obsession with graphics which unfortunately no one seems interested. Now time to release the PS5 Pro with no games.
August already and not even a mention of the Pro. Unless they shadow drop the thing, which Sony has never, ever done, it won't be coming in 2024. 2025 is 5 years into the PS5's lifespan. Even Nintendo is feeling the pressure of revealing the SW2 after 7 years. Sorry, but I don't see any point in spending millions on a "mid gen" upgrade only to release the PS6 2 years later ( 2027 being the leaked date for PS6 ).
To be fair. they only published LA Noire & Max Payne 3. And the time gap for Rockstar's games was actually nearing 5 1/2 years. And Red Dead Redemption has a different studio branch working on that game. As why they don't do that still, IDK!
@@Vyse195 I was a sophomore in high school when GTAV came out I remember trying to talk my mom into letting me stay home from the day it released and it didn't work.
The one thing that upsets me about WB, they sit on old IPs such as Gauntlet not doing anything with them.. I'd love to see a Remaster of old games or even new games in the same series with same formula.
They gave the license of Gaunlet to thw Helldivers developers but after that they haven't bothered to relaunch any Midway Games to modern consoles and if they have they've done it in the most inconvenient way like, in an Arcade1UP that's far from being on par with the original arcade experience.
The Order: 1886 was such an enigma of a title. On one hand, it had gorgeous looking visuals that ran smooth (thanks to it running in letterbox format, I'd wager), interesting Victorian world with fascinating lore and atmosphere and that Gears of War cover system (which isn't a bad thing). But on the other hand, the story could have much stronger, it was remarkably short, Quick-Time events that included the boss fights and *THAT* stealth section had no reason be so infuriating. Despite that, I would have liked to have seen a sequel. C'est la vie.
Instead of closing studios and firing developers, the working force that produce games & revenue/money, companies should fire CEOs, they usually doesn't know what they are doing or supposed to do, DO NOT generate money/revenue (on the contrary, they cost millions upon millions of 💰 to harm companies & games with their BS decisions). 🤷🏻♂️
It really *does* just boil down to CEOs who have no idea what company they're running or what industry they're talking part in. They just wanna impress investors in any way they can while leaving consumers behind.
Thank you! The buck stops at the CEO so if the CEO is making horrible decisions then the CEO needs to be fired.. Then bring someone in who knows what the hell they are doing in terms of gaming..
Obviously because they couldn't afford to continue on their own and Sony had no interest in buying them so they had to go with whoever was willing to purchase the studio
It's over. 80% of the console market ain't give a shit about physical and PC has been 100% digital for years. Emulation is the remaining hope for game ownership and preservation.
@DoomyRei Google physical vs digital game revenue 2023. Spoilers, it was 95% digital vs. 5% physical. You can't manipulate figures that much, and you can't outright lie to investors. I'm not saying I want it to happen. I'm saying it's happening whether we like it or not, and sooner rather than later.
The ratio of physical to digital games is becoming quite extreme. Is there any data on whether physical game buyers tend to be the "whales" for mainstream console gaming, buying and collecting games as well as purchasing deluxe editions?
@@MasterZebulin Yes, Capcom retroactively patched most of their IPs with hardware breaking DRM, on par with DENUVO of past fame, which is the last thing you want on a fixed hardware device like the Steam Deck.
@deathproof8732 thanks for proving my point. A middle earth/hogwarts style GOT game would've cost millions but would've made billions. But they waste resources chasing trends.
@BrawlinEntertaintment2K yes. Not published by WB. Not really the AAA experience as it deserves. GOT game should be talked about like the Witcher games.
I mostly agree with the comment of the day. Just look at Nintendo. The Switch is their longest home console generation of all time. And it's just NOW starting to show sales declines after 7 years on under powered hardware. But now that it's feeling long in the tooth, they're drip feeding us the tease for the next generation, which will be a noticeable and tangible improvement over the prior console. They aren't releasing the next console just for the sake of putting new hardware to market, they understand they need to stay somewhat close to the other platforms, which is why the next console has been so heavily rumored to be somewhere between PS4 and PS4 pro power levels. And if the PS4 is still going strong, does that not bode well for Nintendo if it's easier to port cross-platform tittles? Hardware generations should not end until there's a tangible improvement to be made by doing so. The law of diminishing returns means those generations should be lasting longer than ever before. And for Nintendo, that's exactly what's happening.
Its funny because even though your poll shows that CoD is the least looked forward to title out of those 5 options, its going to outsell every other game on that list combined 3x over.
As for physical games to digital i think the biggest factor is the lack of stock. The ps5 shelves for physical games at many targets and walmarts are virtually empty 24/7 and will only have like 20 copies on release day of a game and then the shelves are empty again. Its Been like like this for about a year now.
I miss when i got 4(6 if u count psp) ratchet and clank games on one console instead of 1. Id take less detailed visually games for more of them (if the story is done right and its fun) cause its weird, i find myself replaying older games more even though they technically were easier to make. Even ones i had no nostalgia ties to
I agree that we’re in for a GTA 6-induced increase in console sales in the next few years. Millions of people are holding out on buying a PS5 because 80% of the games they care about are still dropping on PS4. Heck, I know people who are already buying PS5s specifically to play GTA 6, so when that game finally drops I think it will cause a bit of a surge.
Jesus Christ NO it did not sell well.....Your not selling well when it takes SEVERAL YEARS to get 8 million sold, NO your not selling well when within 2 weeks the price is dropped to under $40.....The game sold piss poor. NO it was not an amazing game, it was pretty good at best IF you managed to push through the first awful few hours. You had to literally get to the part where you drove Boozer to town It didn't get a sequel because it sold piss poor FACT.....AND the sequel sounded like god awful garbage trash with them pushing the constantly online open world MP Helldivers 2 12 million in days, TLOU II 10 million in days, Ghots of Tsushima 10 million in weeks. Days Gone didn't even get people to try it until almost a decade after launch when it was free on PS+ let alone taking a decade to sell 8 million which is FACTUALLY not good
At this point, I honestly don’t see the point in generations. The hardware is no longer the bottleneck, it’s the tools and development. PS5 and Series X are as powerful as they will need to be for quite some time. Switch feels dated, but Switch 2 should put Nintendo into similar territory. At this point, we can put a pin in consoles indefinitely, until the tools and development pipeline can catch up.
Unfortunate about Ready At Dawn, I felt like The Order 1886 had a good world and with some extra emphasis on the gameplay, it could be a great popcorn movie as a video game
Been watching you through the years since the very early days glad to see you have finally gotten the exposure you deserve. It's been good to watch you and your channel evolve. Hope you're well lad!
Those dev circle are the completely stupid as it is now. A game should not take more than 2 to 3 years to make. The industry will continue to crumble until this changes.
Ready at Dawn was such a great studio. Their closure makes me so upset. That's dozens of people without a job (and with no warning because this closure was able to circumvent the California WARN Act). Also, Facebook, just an FYI, "staying within budgetary restrictions" is the same as saving money despite what you're trying to tell us otherwise.
I bought a new PS4 Pro for 250$ at a Black Friday sale a few years ago. The PS5 will always be way more expensive than that and therefore sell less units in its lifetime than the PS4.
Unfortunately, John doesn't know very much about VR. Regarding the PSVR2 update, this isn't news. We've known about this for about as long as we've known about the PSVR2 getting PC support. I think it was the same week as the announcement or the following week that a lot of VR RU-vidrs covered this. Regarding the other announcement about meta closing the studio, Lone Echo 2 wasn't at all in any way, shape, or form badly received. It's absolutely beloved. And by both critics and fans alike. The issue is, it's only available on PC VR through Meta's own launcher. So, it was a complete commercial failure. The reason meta is disbanding the studio seems to be because it's full of incredibly talented people but that only have experience developing for PC VR. Metta wants to focus on standalone VR, and quite rightly so given consumer spending habits, and so is better off shuttering the studio and offering many of the devs their opportunities elsewhere in other meta studios. John also indicated that VR studios are, broadly speaking, all struggling. Struggling. Is also simply not true. There are a number of smaller studios, such as Resolution Games, Fast Travel Games, Vertigo Games, that appear to completely thriving.
2.1 million switches in Q1 compares pretty okay to 2.4 million PS5s. It was really the comparative anylsis from last year that made it seem like such a heavy decline.
I like hearing about Sony struggling in their financials. Maybe they'll stop wasting their time making live service games and actually make games people want to play
There was a 360 exploit back in the day. Rewriting custom firmware to the disc drive. BenQ readers being the easiest to mod. Offline play was the only caveat.
I did wonder what happened to Ready at Dawn after they stopped making Sony games. The VR part of Meta recently showed it is still losing lots of money, so it isn't surprising that the studio is gone.
All this GTA6 conversation about it boosting PS5 sales like crazy is reminding me of when people were saying that the moment FFXVI comes out, the PS5 will destroy the Switch in Japan, we all know how that went lol
It’s GTA 6…. It’s literally the most hyped game in the history of gaming…. It could literally sell a new console if it was released exclusively for a new one…. There is no other game that could measure up to it lol
@@jameswalterthethird Yes but it's not exclusive, what if Xbox ends up getting the marketing rights and do crazy bundles with Series S and X? Hell, what if it ends up coming to Switch 2 the same day it comes out on PS5 and Xbox? There was a lot of hype for both FF PS5 games and they did nothing, GTA6 will def help but I don't think it will help as much as people are expecting it to help.
To be fair, saying Final Fantasy XVI would make the PS5 overtake the Switch in Japan was just delusional, Final Fantasy XVI was developed for Western audiences in mind, I mean, the game's dialog was written and recorded in English first and then it was translated and dubbed into Japanese and other languages like French, German, Latin American, Italian, etc. While I've no doubt Square-Enix wanted the game to be a success in their home country, the Switch has completely dominated that market I can imagine a PS exclusive game changing anything, at this point I don't even think Monster Hunter Wilds will manage to sell the same numbers as World in Japan. Grand Theft Auto VI is another story, at least internationally, it's a more casual oriented franchise, it's is aimed for the audience who bought the PS5 (and Xbox Series) just to play games like Call of Duty, Madden and FIFA, I think it'll increase the selling of PS5, unless something happens, like they game getting delayed, Rockstar announcing a PC version or perhaps even getting released on the Switch 2
I am curious if Sony, Nintendo, and XBOX see themselves as hardware or software companies first. It seems to me that the money is in software. If it is then extending the life of a “console generation” would make much more sense than rushing to make a new console.
Xbox is done with hardware I think they will let 3rd party do it, Playstation will stick to hardware as that is what they started as, electronics maker. Nintendo will keep doing Nintendo things.
Everyone knows that literally Microsoft is a software company....They make Windows, office and other PC related software....They didn't make hardware until they decided to make the Xbox. Its also pretty well known that Sony is a hardware company they did make the walkman, discman, dvd players, they're on the board of blu-ray. The only "software" they make is for their "Playstation hardware"
Id like to see rockstar make those 10 year blockbuster games, then have a set of teams making simpler/dumb games that can come out in two years. Nothing new for 11 years really makes you forget about a franchise.
I agree with the comment of the day. On PlayStation 3 besides been a difficult console to develop we had 3 amazing uncharted games plus the Last Of Us. Double the amount of games on PlayStation 4. And we still don’t event have a game from Naughty Dog on PS5
That October poll was super close. Five options and each was close to 20%. Obviously there’s a noticeable gap between the top and bottom option. But in general the month will be competitive for games
Rocksteady is no more. The people that made those great games have jumped ship. Now we have nothing but terrible gameplay, terrible story and dialogue, and even worse character designs. As sad as it is, it's time to cut them off. A non live service version of Suicide Squad is still a terrible game, and if they did get a reprieve from GaaS, that's all you would get. Best case scenario. You get Arkham Knight with terrible characters, terrible writing and awful character designs... Just play the old games.
I never played The Order 1886. And I’m all about VR. BUT some of the decisions those game companies are making are just downright TERRIBLE for some tech niches that are so foreign to us gamers. It’s like Mario and Sonic all over again.
I wouldn’t be against the idea of extending console generations to around 10 years. Especially since the jump between the 8th and 9th generation of consoles wasn’t that large of a change. Outside of the newer consoles using SSDs instead of HDDs. And even then, you could just use an SSD with an Xbox One or PS4 and benefit from better loading times.
This is a very great video! 👏 And very true I always like to surround myself around people that strive and have motivations and definitely being around others either smarter than me or on the same level and in between some one I can learn from. It's very important to have multiple people to have in your corner
I bought The Order: 1886 at launch way back and never played it. Even then the backlog was unmanageable. I finally got around to playing it last year on my PS5 and I have to say, it was awesome! Combat was decent enough, the story and atmosphere were great, the visuals still look fantastic. The game ends on a total cliffhanger. I never really assumed, given it's poor reception, that a sequel would ever see the light of day. Rather sad to see that it could have been a thing after all but now will never be.
They'd be fools to not release GTA VI on the PS5, they'd easily sell an upgraded edition once the PS6 dropped while moving a ridiculous number of new PS5 consoles.
Unless whoever gets the WB gaming division next is able to fight off the parasites who change narratives first before focusing on the game being fun, they might just as well give the gaming division a "honorable discharge" while they still can.
13:30 I didn't understand this part. How did we jump to the conclusion this isn't great for physical sales? Games from 2013 are still on the PS store selling units at a 70% discount but, most of these games aren't still being printed. There isn't even a common time period to compare.
I'm gutted to see Ready At Dawn close, i love God of War Chains of Olympus and God of War Ghost of Sparta so much they were my favourite God of War games so to see a developer i have a nostalgia for disappear, it saddens me (i miss God of War's classic gameplay style so much)
The cellphone-like upgrade model for consoles has been a subject for years. No real reason to do the generation model anymore, unless the current hardware can't support some gimmick the company wants to do. Going from platform to platform at this point is just a hardware boost, such as GPU. Back in the 90s it was us going from cartridge to disc formats, which of course needed new hardware. Back then, going from say the SNES to the N64 was a bigger leap than the PS4 to the PS5. Console gens these days feel like a cash grab. New system that can use all the old stuff (some cases may need an update to the game), but the old can't use the new games. Internally, all they did was change the disc format reading and bumped hardware specs. Maybe changed the UI a bit.
The day they stop making physical games is the day I stop playing on console. Physical must not exit the industry. Is a huge slap in the face of all consumers. Specially since digital games are the same price… is a joke!
@@JT.PlaysGames upgrading by spending another $500+ in the next 6 years when the newest console is going for that price? Its definitely more practical for the average gamer to get a console imo. I got a pc and console but im just looking at it from an average gamer.
If you paid $1500 for a gaming PC they ripped you off. For about $900 you can get one good one. Won't be top of the line but I can play any game this generation.
even if WB sells some of their gaming division, that won't include any IPs at all, so if they decided to sell Neatherreal Studios, it wouldn't include any IPs like Mortal Kombat, wb will keep all IPs no matter what and just license out their IPs to other developers to make the games, meaning Mortal Kombat would be rebooted again and injustice 3 won't happen at all
That wouldn't fly with any buyer. Whoever makes an offer to WB will want all the game IPs as well. The studios are pretty much worthless without the IP. NetherRealm is worthless without Mortal Kombat. Why would a buyer pay for NetherRealm when they could easily put together their own studio? It's Mortal Kombat that they would want.
I do have a gaming laptop with an rtx 2060, but I doubt it has enough juice...it might be better to get the adapter and run on a more powerful pc. Perhaps I will wait for some reviews and videos.
Path tracing on pc shows that there is not much further for graphics to go and that's great. We need developers to start focusing on creating engaging worlds, world filled with physics and interactivity not seen generations. Too much of our open worlds are filled with repetitive quest. Too much of the conversations are on repeat. It's jarring when you play a game that looks great but conversations feel scripted, it needs to feel more organic.
