An Interview with Moe Howard of the Three Stooges in 1973

I made this recording, an interview with Moe Howard of the Three Stooges in April 1973, using my dad's cassette recorder, no VCR's then. It aired on WTAF 29 in Philadelphia. At that time Channel 29 aired the Three Stooges weekdays from 3:30 to 4:30. On my walk home from school I would stop at my Grandmother's house, watch the Stooges whilst eating Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets! Who could ask for anything more.

I've been a Stooges fan since I first saw them on TV in the late 1960's. Good on you for making the recording in the first place, and for keeping it for 50 years and then posting it here. Part of what I do for a living is to transfer old analog recordings to digital for people, and I am always amazed at what people have recorded and kept for decades.

Being a child of the 90s, I feel very fortunate that my parents introduced me to "The Three Stooges". Some may look and see the shorts in black and white and think they're nothing that you be into as a kid, but we loved these. "Disorder In the Court" was the first one I can remember seeing, and it is to this day one of the funniest things I've ever seen. There are jokes that I get now as an adult that I didn't get as a kid that make me laugh insanely hard.

Any time any of the Three Stooges were on the Tonight Show back in the day, my mother (of blessed memory) would let me sneak out to watch them. I suffered a concussion once as a small child and had to stay awake as the treatment back then proscribed, and watched the Three Stooges Go To Mars or something on the late, late show on the only station that stayed on the air past midnight back then. I fell asleep in the middle of it, but somehow survived in spite of that.

One thing you can say about Moe is that he always personally answered all fan mail letters sent to him. He was wrong about the title of the short in which Curly suffered his stroke-it was Half Wits Holiday from 1946, not Hoi Polloi. Holiday was a remake of Hoi Polloi.
@kiajulian4619
@kiajulian4619 5 месяцев назад
Yeah I noticed that! In interviews Moe always said it was Hoi Polloi .. when it was indeed Half Wits Holiday! But I never heard him name his favorite shorts... Microphonies and Oh You Nasty Spy are two of my favorites... But I can't recall Slippery Silks by name. When I get home I'm going to see if I can find all three shorts ... It'll be fun to watch Moe working when you know he is enjoying making those particular episodes! And he said it was difficult making Woman Haters which is also one of my favorites! Yeah it *looked difficult to make and it was lovely to hear Moe say it turned out great! So much new information to digest!

That was a riveting wonderful interview! I've been obsessed with the Stooges since I was about 7 years old! I loved how they synced up what Moe was saying with the photos being shown! The interviewer was fantastic and it was wonderful how he realized what a treasure he had sitting in front of him and told Moe that he was his idol and called him a genius and fawned over him as he SHOULD have! LOL! Moe is so sharp and down to earth ! I have many books on The Three Stooges... And I even have Moe's autobiography but in this interview he said so many things that I didn't know! In Los Angeles late last year I went to an autograph signing event in Hollywood and I actually got to meet Curley's grandson who has a wonderful RU-vid channel! He signed a photo for me! Thanks for posting this great interview with one of the geniuses of our time!

I've been a Three Stooges fan for more than 50 years. but when I was a little kid The Three Stooges made me cry. Moe scared me because he was so mean to the other guys, always slapping them around. I became a fan in the late 60s when they started airing them every afternoon on a local channel. Unfortunately, my mother thought The Three Stooges were the epitome of no class and forbid me from watching them when she was home. She'd say "You think poking somebody in the eyes with your fingers is funny and what do you mean nyuck nyuck nyuck??" and that would make me laugh at her.

They were exploited by Columbia which signed them for 20 years and Columbia massively underpaid them. They were a big theater draw during the 1930s and beyond, bringing in millions to Columbia’s coffers but their salary didn’t reflect how important they were to the studio. Moe unfortunately was the one who did the “negotiating” for the three.

My father didn't care if I watched them, but my mother wasn't a fan of their comedy style. I also watched a lot of the other old classic black and white shows as well when there wasn't anything else to watch. Sadly modern day tv shows are just total garbage compared to these classics.
