The doctors wanted to institutionalize Curly when he finally became physically and mentally sick. Moe rejected this and personally took care of his little brother. This act, by itself, is all we need to know about Moe.
Fantastic. I met her father, Moe in 1960 on a publicity tour for one of 3 Stooges movies. He was cool. He went to great length to explain to me I shouldn't try at home what they did to each other in the movies. I told him I knew that.
@@mariestreeting4213 When my Kansas cousin was ten years old back in the late fifties, on a vacation in New York city with his mother and father, one day they got off of the hotel elevator and there was Larry, sitting in the lobby. My cousin still has the autograph Larry graciously signed for him. He said Larry was a very nice, soft-spoken man, and that he smelled good!
Moe has an interview with John Chancellor in 1975 (here on RU-vid), shortly before he passed - he himself says, "The Three Stooges will still be around 100 years from now". He was and is 105% correct.

@@mariestreeting4213 Given her at age in 1983 it would be a miracle if she would be still alive but indeed sad that they all couldn't live forever, such a legacy should never end.
I'm an old man now, and I grew up watching the Stooges. Their antics and comedy genius will live forever. I wish they could have seen the legends they have become.
@@johnschuh8616 .....also, the fact that they were just "kicked to the curb" when the shorts department at their studio shut down. They were treated very badly by the studios but they were found by a new audience in the 60's on T.V. re-runs.
The 3 Stooges were going to appear live on stage in St Louis in the late '60's, but I think Larry had a stroke and it was cancelled. I wanted to go so bad.
@@gmmakesmehurl try Harry. Try try. For this grammar mole deserves it. In the words of Curly Howard. "If at first you don't succeed, keep on 'succing' til you do succeed. Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk!"
When my son said he liked the stooges. I knew he was going to be ok. A real man which he turned out to be he is now 31 and still loves the stooges. He gave me the entire collection for Christmas. Don't forget Shemp.
I like some of the Shemp episodes. Different than Curly but still good. I know he also had some movie roles outside of the Stooges which the others didn't have.
I am the exact same age as your son and loved the Stooges when I was 12 years old. I got my mother the boxed dvd collection “I Love Lucy” for her birthday.
As a kid in the 50s & 60s I watched the Stooges every day after school. When I was around 13 or 14 they did a live appearance at our county fair and I talked my dad into taking me. At that point it was Moe, Larry and one of the Joes (don’t remember which one). The grandstand was packed and they were hilarious. I’m now 71 and have gotten one of my granddaughters into them. Have to keep Stooge Mania alive in the bloodline!!
No swearing on the stooges! Absolutely NOT!! You go tell Shemp, Curly, Larry, and Moe that you're sorry!! Do it now! You picklebrain! (Hits on head with hammer)
@MichaelKingsfordGray Fuck off with your imaginary big bang theory WHICH by the way was based on the Chinese Pangu mythos. Scientist gotta come up with something to get those government grants I guess. lol
I used to run home (honestly) from school just so I could watch the Three Stooges, followed immediately by Dark Shadows, w/ Barnabas Collins. Back when TV was good fun.
Victor Everlove YES!! That is exactly what we did at my house. Race home with a couple friends and my brother to watch that line up with our mom! An absolutely priceless time in our life!
I like how Dave took note of how good the Stooges looked in what looked like very expensive tailored suits. Dave said Larry looked great, like a banker.
@@cybervision_1 OBummer never really did anything for the Black community ☻ he was just a poster child Black face put in place to Pacify the ungrateful, disinchanted, disgruntled & malcontents in Da Hood !
The greatest comedy team of all time! This is of course with Curly and Shemp. I am so happy that I ran across this and got to see Moe's daughter. Truly funny! 🤣
That was PRICELESS..... I only wish they could see that they are every bit as popular, or more, than ever. I never tire of those guys. Was laughing as a kid and I still laugh every time I see them. Long live the Stooges, for all the joy and laughter they spread across the world.....
I love the Stooges as much as you do but, remember, that they had great writers, directors, and producers, not to mention supporting players that made them shine. Remember how it takes a village to educate a child? It took a great staff to provide scripts, editing, and direction added to their own natural talent to make them the great comedians they were.
@@caraqueno People like Del Lord and Jules White, as well as some of the people they played off of, like Vernon Dent and Emil Sitka, deserve much of the credit for the Stooges' success too. Btw, one of Lucille Ball's earliest roles was in the Stooges short Three Little Pigskins.
@@Arbeedubya Indeed! No film nor tv comedian shines without the invaluable support of supporting players. The Stooges had some of the best comedic actors in film history supporting them.
@@caraqueno No. What must be remembered is that they did write most and the whole act was created back when they did Vaudeville. No script writer wrote the nyuk, nyuk, nyuk or the Niagara Falls act and so on. Film made it so they didn't have to really slap each other anymore and brought them worldwide attention eventually.
Letterman does really well here! He asks good questions and lets Joan Howard Maurer talk. And that old home-movie footage is terrific--Shemp was definitely "on" all the time, even at home!
Wow Moe did a wonderful job raising his daughter she comes off as being very sweet and very caring instantly drawn to this lovely women god bless her rip peace Moe you are still fondly remembered up to day in 2021
What a great interview! I have been a Three Stooges fan for almost 60 years and enjoyed listening to Joan Howard Mauer tell the audience what The Stooges were like off camera. What a piece of history. The Stooges are all long gone but still entertain people 80 years later through their short movies being shown on TV to this day.
The wonderful relationship and love all the stooges had behind the scenes really makes their works better. A loving family working to make the world laugh is as touching as it gets.
@@hellfire66683 I know he was officially a Stooge, but I simply couldn't stand Joe Besser and couldn't put him in even the same category as Curly-Joe DeRita, never mind the original Curly or Shemp. Btw, they had once considered making Buddy Hackett a Stooge, and after Larry had a stroke and couldn't carry on, Moe briefly considered replacing him with Emil Sitka, who'd been in several of their episodes. Also, DeRita was the only one of the six Stooges who wasn't Jewish.
I'm in total heaven.. A few years back I purchased a 5 volume DVD set of every short the Stooges ever made! It's like 216 episodes.. When I want a good laugh, I just pick a disc and throw it in!
I love that they did these Stooges antics in their free time. And Moe stealing a kiss from his wife when he is supposed to be greeting the married couple is so adorable. This family is probably the biggest laughter factory in history.
The only negative part of this interview, was to hear that Curly wasn't a happy man; and that saddens me a great deal. For someone who created such laughter, he couldn't find the peace and happiness he deserved.......... terrible.
I do know that his third wife loved him very much, the one he had the daughter with. It's been said that his later years were his happiest with that wife and daughter and she took such great care of him.
She is great! What a cute, funny kid, completely at ease being funny, a natural. Amazing home movies; they really revealed a lot of the rapport between family members. Thanks!
Grew up watching these guys and still LOVE watching them today. We watch them on METV in Columbus, Ohio every week. It never gets old. Imagine Heaven with these guys. Three stooges are legends, always loved, never forgotten!!!
I have so much respect for MOE...he was the brains...literally behind these guys...he took care of the other stooges taxes...pushed for all there deals and movies and shows...he was the driving force behind them and really was THE reason for the 3 Stooges. He also took care of Curly in his end days...much love For Moe and the 3 stooges

What a wonderful lady, I still can't get enough of these guys, just got a huge set of DVD's for Christmas, 2019.
Many thanks to Mrs. Howard Maurer for being so gracious as to give us all a look into The Stooges private lives. She has always been willing to share the home movies, which are so funny and entertaining. I remember seeing her show them many years before this, on the Today Show, I think it was. Always a great thrill for any Stooges fan. Thanks to her for being so kind as to share. Long life and good health to a lovely lady. And thanks for posting, Don.
Many years ago I met her. She lived a few blocks from where I lived. She had a box of Moe's cancelled checks and sold them for 5.00 or 10.00 each and donated the money to charity. I still have them to this day.
They have the best home movies I've ever seen. Thank You to Moe's daughter for sharing these gems and for whoever uploaded this video. RIP Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp. Thanks for the decades of laughter you've given us!
When my son was about 6 years old, I gave him the TV remote and told him it was his choice. So, as he was flicking through the channels, he passed right by the Stooges. I said, "hold on, what are you doing? You passed up the Stooges". Then it occurred to me that he didn't know who they were. What kind of a father was I? Anyway, we switched back and it wound up being the episode where Curly was the boxer and would go crazy if he smelled "Wild Hyacinth" perfume ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kgtJIZZOiFQ.html ). Man, we laughed. That was over 20 years ago and we still occasionally reminisce on that great father/son moment. Anyway, I thought it was pretty neat how Letterman's audience went from cold to warm through that interaction. Joan was really well spoken and gracious. And it was nice to see Dave treating her nicely.
My favorite comedy team of ALL time. I don't know if they ever realized how famous they were and would be thrilled to know today they still have loyal fans and new fans. They are in a class of their own and always will be. :o)
The Three Stooges was my childhood!! Didn’t know the shorts were reruns!! Just enjoyed the comedy ! They are a National Treasure ! Their legacy lives on!!
As a young teenager of the 70s, the Stooges were one of the most important things I ever experienced. They formed the basis of my best friendships, my overall sense of humor, my powers of observation, outlook on the absurdities of life, and my ability to block any fingers coming at my face (LOL). And I'm not joking here really at all! As long as there's a planet earth, and a way to show things on a screen, the Stooges will live forever.
My father, who worked in local media circa 1950 was assigned to pick them up at a train station and deliver them to a studio. As they exited the train to a small waiting crowd, they acted in character and did a bit of shenanigans much to the delight of the waiting fans. Truly a class act
I remember watching this on Letterman's late night show on NBC. The old family movies were fun and touching. The Three Stooges will never age or be forgotten. I still watch reruns today.
I worked for a Book Bindery in Massachusetts that made those books somebody an employee took the negatives from all the pictures and Moe's daughter what's going on sue are printing company for millions of dollars and the company asked for whoever took them maybe by accident to return them which at some point they did this was in the early 80s

7:32-7:36. Very rare moment all three Howard brothers on screen together. Narrated by Moe's daughter, and an added appearance by their father, makes this a treat to watch. Thank you Howard family. :)
I wish people would post more and more and more of this material. They deserve to have every bit of their history shared with the world. (Or with their fans at the very least )
Blessings to all of the Stooges and Joan. Fun to watch their home movies and shorts today. Thanks, Dave, for bringing a classy woman and her family history to TV for us to enjoy; best in your own retirement.
Moe's daughter is articulate and entertaining, which I guess isn't too surprising, considering her genes. Letterman seems genuinely interested, which leads to one of his better interviews. I grew up with The Three Stooges playing continuously on television, so they were a part of my childhood. I love these guys! I've visited their graves, which are in the Los Angeles area. I'll take you, if you'd like to see them all.
