This is a great book. Not a microcosmic panegyric about ‘Doctor Who’ but a real look at the programme in an age where the BBC complained of its cheapness but gave it no money, consolidated a real mythology and trend for guest stars etc that the modern ‘Doctor Who’ stands on the shoulders on. Gary Downie is the monster behind the throne and JNT can be Caligula-lite but I implore fans to read it. It’s great.

JNT certainly doesn't get enough credit. He did so much for the show.

Yes, he got it cancelled in 1985.

I loved the book but often felt shell shocked by many of the incidents. It was a very emotional experience from start to finish. :)

What a pity this book's now unaffordable or only released in tiny limited quantities. A print on demand option would be perfect.

It's getting a reprint, though I believe under a new title.

Very interesting interview. Would love to read the book, but can’t afford the eBay prices. Any chance of a reprint, please? 🙂👍

The baggage of having Tom Baker -you're having a fuckin' laugh!

He only got the job because nobody else wanted it. The awful truth dawned when he tried to do what every producer before him did, leave and start on a new show.

I think if you look at the Graham Williams era Doctor Who had become a bit silly . John Nathan Turner made some great stories during his time .I think Doctor Who would have been cancelled earlier if it wasn't for him .
@sadako24

Even Graham Williams' worst stories were practically masterpieces when compared to the likes of Time-Flight and Warriors of the Deep.

In hindsight, it might have been more merciful if it had been cancelled then.

Oh dear! Poor Richard Marson still under the JNT spell, championing his disastrous reign as producer of Doctor Who. I'm sure JN-T was a nice chap but what Marson is spouting is total revisionism. You'd think none of the appalling decisions JN-T implemented were nothing to do with him. Perhaps the fans and the public saw a different show to Marson in the 1980's but we all remember how it really was back then.

True. JNT and Saward should have left with Peter Davison after Caves of Androzani the we would have been spared the horrors to come (Twin Dilemma, Colins costume). The show had not yet been tainted with postponement or cancellation so another BBC producer would have not been put off from taking it on.

It's not revisionism. Most of the arguments made against 80s Who hold no scrutiny, and the ones that do can usually be applied just as well to any other era.
@tost6956

the show was far better in the mid-late 80s than the early 80s

@@sidrat69he'd wanted to leave after season 20 but was asked to stay to do season 21 in return for making "The Five Doctors", which he had wanted to do.

@@tost6956it's more "style over substance" qirh atmosphere and Easter egg references galore than actual storytelling. Ghost Light's main idea doesn't even hold up when compared yo key scenes such as moths coming alive for no reason (and nothing to do with the Husks or the stupid idea to catalog all evolution and the villain is a nit.) References to Bessie and a history book and namedropping old monsters was not "cool" when they detracted from the stories in the process.

woah, sounds complicated.

Unfortunately, a drama producer without any narrative sense is like a lorry driver without a driving license - a waste of space.
@ShamrockParticle
@ShamrockParticle 11 месяцев назад
Even McCoy's dodgy scripts had more of a defined mission and vision than the mid-80s that Later-Davison and Colin suffered through. This isn't to say their eras were bad, they're not - they're just different and season 22 did get respectable viewing figures... but Bidmead and Cartmel had the consistently strongest themes in the scripts they worked with.
@normanby100

@@ShamrockParticle Themes be damned. Robert Holmes had the gift of writing a solid thriller adventure with no fat or padding.
