Part three of An Introduction to KiCad V4.07 has Shawn fully laying out his 555 circuit in Schematic Capture. Most basic components will be found in the default KiCad library. That being said when you come across a part that is not included in the default library; the Digi-Key Symbol and Footprint Library will have you covered. To that end Shawn shows where to download and install Digi-Key’s custom libraries.

Thank you very much for this great series. It really makes getting into and learning to make a PCB way easier than googleing every tiny step! FOR ANNYONE WHO USES KICAD 6.0 (like me): General: "C" does not work for copying. However, "Ctrl + C" does and then pasting with "Ctrl + V" like you would do anywhere else. at 11:37: click "Preferences">"Manage Symbol Libraries" at 11:43: click the folder-icon at the bottom left and navigate to your KiCad directory with the library files you just downloaded

Thanks very much for this tutorial. Just getting started with KiCAD and this is very helpful. I did find out the hard way that you should save your schematic along the way. KiCAD crashed right before finishing the wiring and I lost it all. Live and learn.

Ctrl-S is your friend in almost all softwares.

Either it's a difference with KiCad 5 or with the current version of the digikey library, but the symbol for the switch has drastically changed. There is no box and it defaults to pins 1 and 2 being connected instead of 2/3. Of course it's a switch so it doesn't really matter, but I used the orientation function and mirrored the part along the X axis so that I could hook it up the way it is in the video. You do this by right mouse clicking on the component on the schematic and choosing orientation -> mirror around x axis.

It looks like the changes were made to the library in the month following this video. If you're Git-wise, you could "pull" the initial commit and use that - I suspect you'll find the version of the library that is compatible with this schematic. However, you'd then be missing out on a great many commits of changes, so you'd possibly want to have two separate local copies of the repository. But... mirroring does the job, tbh

On my 4k display + macOS I was unable to see the Grid. I fixed this by going to Kicad > Settings > Schematic Editor > Display Options and changed "Grid thickness" to 3px.

Browse all the libraries that come installed by default - not on mine I don't :( I'm running Linux and I have no symbols/components whatsoever and I'd love to know how I can get that library please!

first time i used KiCAD i filled out the info box by creating text elements and aligning them manually, which was pretty stupid now that i know the right way to do it

how does the simulation know the functionality of the custom-designed circuit component like 555 in this case?

you need to specify it's spice Model. KiCad is not suitable for such tasks.

The newer version of KiCad has newer terminology. Is eeschema (v4) the same as Edit Schematic (v5) ?

No, and in eeschema I think the only way you COULD do this is with a text comment.

The later version of KiCad it is called place symbol. First option on Place menu

isn't powerflag still needed ?? aren't unconnected pins to be marked / forced as unconnected ??

From what I understand, the specific Power Flag symbol is only needed to tell the ERC that power comes from somewhere else. Since our power/ground connections are all on this one page, I don't think the Power Flags are needed (everything works without them). Similarly, it's a good idea to use the "no connect" symbol to mark pins as not connected, but it's not necessary to make the board.

i have kicad 7.0. and i'm facing issue in importing libraries. libraries get added. but when i press ok, it shows an error saying symbol library failed to load. file is not a valid symbol or symbol library file. kindly guide me through it. thanks

Why would you want to draw it on paper first ?? If it is to serve a useful purpose, KiCad should be easy enough to use for a first, modifiable sketch. It should be an extension of your drawing hand, not something to tread lightly around, afraid of making a hard-to-correct error.

To each their own. I usually prefer to draw it on paper first, where I find it easier to correct mistakes and be able to see how pins should be connected before making parts. There's certainly nothing stopping you if you wish to skip that step and just capture the schematic directly in eeschema.

I'm with schwartzenheimer1 on this. The whole point of CAD/CAM software is to eliminate tedious hand drawing. That being said I will print a view from the data sheet and write notes on it as I use eeschema. And like you said, to each their own.

I always scribble in a notebook. Gets ideas down, wherever you are. Not necessary perhaps but nice.
