‘To me this painting is an encapsulation of what happiness looks like,’ says specialist Elizabeth Beaman, introducing John Leslie Breck’s vibrant painting Garden, Ironbound Island, Maine, thought to have been painted in 1896. In the video above, Beaman takes a close look at this and two other exceptional examples of American Impressionism by the movement’s leading lights.

This is beautiful! The Pennsylvania Impressionists are also worth a look at as influential American artists.

Love and adore the American Impressionists as well as Monet and others i.e. French Impressionism. What? No Frank Benson who was regarded as one of the best American Impressionists! I have two Frank Benson prints in my home which I love, "Eleanor" which is my oldest daughter's name, named after my late mother and "Summer". I happen to be a professional artist formerly a NYC fashion artist who has turned to American Impressionist style painting. I live near the sea and love gardens so coupled with my experience in doing portraits and figure illustration, this style of art is right up my alley! Thanks for sharing~

p.s. absolutely adore that Beck painting...marvelous! I bet it's even more beautiful standing in front of it...reminds me of my painting of gardens by the sea here on Cape Cod!

Heavy paint allows light to do all the work. Reflects at different angles on 3-dimensional surfaces.

i find american impressionism stiff, and safe.manet was stiff also, but not as stiff as the americans.who would find ladies with parasols a great intellectual concert? i guess patrons who did not want some thing on the wall that would confront them.
