In this second video on kabuki makeup, we focus on the stylized system of kumadori, which heightens the beauty of many important roles on the repertoire, particularly those acted in the aragoto style. The kumadori was introduced in a primitive form by Ichikawa Danjūrō I at the end of the 17th century, most likely inspired by the puppet theatre.

As someone who really loves and wants to follow Kabuki but lives away from Japan, thanks for these videos, they're a really great way to experience the plays from afar. I'd love a third installment in this series, always really fun knowing more about the fundamentals and trivia

I have just found your channel, and it is excellent for anyone new to Kabuki or who like myself have spent half his life living in Japan. Would particularly congratulate you on presenting the content using subtitles, and not the personality of the presenter presenting the content. Works wonderfully. Thank you

I, too, would really love to see another episode about Kabuki makeup. Yes, indeed. I can look at my new Kabuki Kumadori stickers in a fresh light and recognise them whenever there is a full-length Kabuki play online or if/when (I prefer 'when') I'll be able to travel to Japan and enjoy a live performance of Kabuki! ... and here's another truckload of big 'thank yous' coming your way for another great video.

This is super interesting and informative! What a great piece of memorabilia art after the performance to make an impression of the actors' makeup.

I love your channel! I have a question regarding the Priest in Narukami, why is he wearing a red makeup instead of a blue? I thought he was evil?

Good question! Although his behavior and looks might seem villainous, the true aragoto villain of his story is the Prince Hayakumo no Ōji, who plots to take over the country. In a sense, Narukami is first betrayed by the court, and then by Princess Taema, which causes his downfall. A similar example can be seen in the scene Kurumabiki, where Matsuomaru (a villain at the moment) appears in the makeup of an aragoto hero, while his master, the evil Fujiwara no Shihei, wears blue kumadori.

How long does it normally take for an actor to apply his makeup?

Does makeup for women characters have differences that define character? If so, I’d like to see a video on this.
