Not all Petco's exercise improper husbandry, just the same as not all mom and pop shops have the best husbandry. But if yours does, then by all means play this for their management!
@believeinshadows139
@believeinshadows139 5 лет назад
Stefania's Exotical Adventures your probably right. Tho from personal experience every petco ive walked into has like 10-15 stunted skinny geckoes with stuck shed sitting in sand. Same for dragons. It’s not hard to put them on echo earth or carpet and split up there numbers to some of the empty tanks they almost always have.
@macawlover8251
@macawlover8251 5 лет назад
update: so I went to Petco with my chrome book, and stood by the leopard geckos in front of the calci sand (which is by the leos *cough cough* for some reason *cough cough* ) and played this on loop loud, but not too loud as to disturb the dying geckos people, reptile owners I'm guessing, stopped, looked at me, and started slow clapping, I also brought along post its and put a small one over the lable for the calci sand so it said Death Sand, it took about 30 mins to get kicked out, but I feel like my actions did something, I'm going to another Petco soon to do the same thing

Great video, love the graphics and animation. My leopard gecko is at least 26 years old now, she was adult size when I bought her back in 1992. I wish I'd had this kind of care guide back then, the only book I found at the time said sand was the ideal substrate and it was normal and healthy for them to eat sand.

My currently unsexed and unnamed baby makes me so happy! I love watching it hunt and explore. Whenever I go in to clean or fill water it's right there wanting to know what's happening. My adult, Jasper, is totally different. He won't eat in front of anyone, has no desire to check out the noises he hears or anything, and just keeps to himself. I'm still very new to keeping geckos so I often feel lost. I haven't tried handling the adult because he's so skittish and I'm afraid of spooking him, but this video gives me confidence in knowing I seem to be doing everything right. Thank you so much for your content!

Love the production in this, and the info is spot on! One minor quiggle on the UV suggestion though : there are some documented instances of UV being harmful to a handful of morphs, namely those with reduced or absent melanin. These morphs are susceptible to sunburn from even moderate uv exposure (as they are primarily nocturnal and don't occur typically in the wild). I only bring it up because these morphs seem to be rather popular and accessible, so I feel it's worth mentioning.
@leopardgeckotalk
@leopardgeckotalk 5 лет назад
I tried looking up about the albinos as someone raised that concern before, but in that case it would be best to use a lower percentage UV. With my albinos they're fine, but I do wonder about ones that are pure white.

I have learned so much from your videos! I am making plans on getting my first leo in a few months. I have a couple concerns/questions if you have time to respond. (1) How do you make sure you don't get a gecko with Enigma Syndrome? Are some morphs safer than others? (2) The research about feeder insects can be confusing. I've read Dubia roaches are better than crickets, but yours look so amazingly healthy on what they eat. It gets overwhelming. Thank you for any input you have. I'm working my way through all your videos.
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
Charity Sheppard dubias are better than crickets but they can do fine eating mainly crickets. Dubias are much less annoying to keep though. Just avoid enigmas, white and yellows, and lemon frosts when getting one from a breeder.

I thought it was kinda weird that when flooring was mentioned for the geckos, reptile carpet was never brought up. For a while I used sand, but one of them got an infection, and we assumed he was getting wet in his water bowl, then that made sand stick to him when he got out, this caused an infection, so we switched to reptile carpet.
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 3 года назад
Carpet is not a suitable substrate. It’s unnatural, harbours bacteria, tends to get caught on their teeth and claws, and doesn’t offer any digging enrichment whatsoever. A suitable loose substrate is best. Good options include zoo med’s reptisoil, a mix that’s 60% top/potting soil and 40% playsand (or a soil/sand/clay mix), Arcadia earth mix arid, or Terra Sahara from the bio dude.

@yvonnevalenza7583
@yvonnevalenza7583 5 лет назад
My guess would be that it wouldn’t count as a cool hide because some rocks can transfer heat? It sounds like a neat idea just for having another hide but I think putting the cool hide on the opposite end of the tank is better.

Hey Rebecca! I’m getting a leopard geko in September for my birthday and I was wondering if they needed anything special added to their water because of the chlorine and also if just crickets and mealworms would be a stable diet (with supplements of course) it would be greatly appreciated if you could help me out :) I am also in England so if you know any places I could go to then that would also be appropriated :) thank you
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
You can use reptisafe to treat water. Or spring water, or tap water left out for 24 hours. I’ve heard that in some places in the UK there’s no chlorine in the water. Crickets are a good staple diet but it’s ideal to vary their diet. Dust with calcium every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings

Thanks!

you're meant to spray down the earthmix arid every now and again, but i'll admit i am terrible with doing it, it feels so unnatural to spray down my leos tank haha, but i do spray their humid hide or areas of the tank when they're about to shed. If its full bio active with a clean up crew, it probably doesn't need changing often.

I have a question got one for Christmas have calcium supplements and stuff but don’t have UVB if you have supplements do you still need UVBs?cause they’re pretty pricey. Another question is with the heat mat do you put it under the aquarium or inside?
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
You don’t need UVB. The heat mat goes underneath. They come with little things to put under the corners of the tank. The tank needs to be elevated for air flow. Make sure there’s a thermostat too

so i've been doing a lot of research on getting a leopard gecko and each website I see all say different things. Whether that be substrates, hides, calcium bowls/sand, lamp temps, whatever. Can you tell me, in your opinion, the best substrate and kind of food? i've got the main idea for what i need but it's confusing when everything says something different. thank you !
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
Substrate: paper towel for the first six weeks for quarantine and under six months. Dry eco earth, organic top soil, a bioactive substrate, or something similar over six months. Diet: live insects only. It’s best to vary their diet. Feed mainly Dubia roaches, crickets, and/or locusts. For variety you can use mealworms, superworms, silkworms, and Phoenix worms. For treats waxworms and hornworms. Dust with calcium powder every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings. Gutload the insects with carrot, potato, and apple.

I do have a question! My leopard gecko ALWAYS stays on his cold side, and when I pick him up, he does feel slightly cold. I have tried switching around the hides (to see if it was the hide he preferred), food and water location, etc. Is this normal? I use a thermometer and I have a little humidity/temp gauge on the hot side so I know it's not *too* hot. Is this normal?
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
Angela Asylum what’s the temperature? Is the thermometer digital? I don’t recommend newspaper, it has toxic ink. Paper towel is good for the time being. You can switch to dry eco earth
@leopardgeckotalk
@leopardgeckotalk 5 лет назад
do you use a thermostat? that will control the temp, and the thermometer should be one with a probe so you can put the probe on the area where the gecko will be laying for a precise temp reading. :)

Hello to anyone reading this, I have a question. I am currently planning on getting a new leopard gecko, specifically a baby. I just had a question about the baby geckos setup. I already have a 20 gallon long tank ready for the little guy when he’s big enough, but I’ve been researching and haven’t found anywhere that says if I should or shouldn’t go ahead and put him in the 20 gallon. I’m worried because if it’s really small, it could get lost in such a space and not get the proper heating. I was wondering what an ideal baby gecko setup would look like and if it would be okay in the 20 gallon. Please and thank you in advance!

Any advice to a reptile owner who is getting a family cat? I have one juvenile leopard gecko, and my family wants me to keep the cat with me since I’ve wanted one my whole life. The cat we are adopting is super mellow and relaxed, but that doesn’t stop me from worrying. The tank does have a screen lid and there is no way for the cat to access the gecko directly.
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
eyekapdin that should be fine, just never let the gecko out when the cat is in the room. Make sure the tank can’t be knocked over or broken into. If it’s an Exo Terra the top is very fragile
@leopardgeckotalk
@leopardgeckotalk 5 лет назад
Yeah that should be fine. We adopted a kitten when I only had gizmo and minnie, and though at first she was curious, so we'd have to shut her out the room, as she aged she mellowed out and now she doesnt even notice them in their tanks.

@curlysreptiles3855
@curlysreptiles3855 5 лет назад
Fiona Shepley don't want to start agruement over what is better heat source but personally my opinion is in the wild their only heat source is the sun which heats everything including the ground. So overhead heat lambs replicate that.
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
Ezra Curl I completely agree! It’s just that me and others have found that most geckos seem to prefer staying in their warm hide on their heat mat during the day, even with an overhead heat source available. So they can hide and get heat if they choose. That’s why I think it’s good to have both to give them more options :)

I wanted to ask, since leos aren't fully nocturnal or diurnal, is it absolutely imperative for them to have UVB lighting?
@lydiaeddins2083
@lydiaeddins2083 5 лет назад
They don't need it, as long as you give them d3 vitamin powder with every third meal. But they will have brighter colors if kept with a uvb light. I don't keep uvb with my leos, and I notice that their colors will shift when I handle them in a will lit room verses just hanging out in their mostly dark tanks.

@lydiaeddins2083 5 лет назад
@@floundrrpoundrr2456 Your welcome! Be sure to look into the different strengths of UVB if you go with a combo light (leos can burn easy). Also, they will need less D3 in their diet to not get a vitamin overdose. But I haven't researched the specifics on those. Leopard Gecko has videos on it.
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
Lydia Eddins UVB is beneficial but not completely necessary. Don’t use both artificial d3 and UVB. Be sure to use a tube light. Arcadia and zoo med are good brands. Don’t use it with geckos with red eyes. Keep in mind that screen lids block 50% of the UVB, 5% UVB is good
