Just this morning, my friend asked for a theology podcast explaining Lutheranism. I told her about this series but that you’d done one on the history and sadly not yet the theology - then this! The Lord provides!

Heretical prayer: O Mother of Perpetual Help, thou art the dispenser of all the gifts which God grants to us miserable sinners; and for this end He has made thee so powerful, so rich, and so bountiful, in order that thou mayest help us in our misery. Thou art the advocate of the most wretched and abandoned sinners who have recourse to thee: come to my aid, for I recommend myself to thee. In thy hands I place my eternal salvation, and to thee I entrust my soul. Count me among thy most devoted servants; take me under thy protection, and it is enough for me. For, if thou protect me, I fear nothing; not from my sins, because thou wilt obtain for me the pardon of them; nor from the devils, because thou art more powerful than all hell together; nor even from Jesus, my judge, because by one prayer from thee He will be appeased. But one thing I fear: that in the hour of temptation I may through negligence fail to have recourse to thee and thus perish miserably. Obtain for me, therefore, the pardon of my sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace ever to have recourse to thee, O Mother of Perpetual Help. This is a legit Roman Catholic prayer, look up "O Mother of Perpetual Help" if you want to know if it’s legit. This is super heretical. This doctrine of invoking departed saints doesn’t seem just like "hey it’s like praying to a friend.". :)

I would be interested in a history video about what happened to Lutheranism after Martin Luther. Lutherans put their entire narrative on this one man. At the LCMS history museum in St Louis, there's this huge exhibit about Martin Luther, and then it skips to German immigrants in America.

I grew up Lutheran, and still attend a Lutheran church. This was a good refresher to see if there's anything I differ on. All seems straightforward to me from the scripture. I don't know much about which other Protestant churches have confession and absolution, or how they do it, but that's a big stickler to me; especially, before taking the Lord's Supper.
@adolphCat
@adolphCat 7 месяцев назад
Why is this a problem for you? Why don't you want to receive absolution for your sins, before receiving the Consecrated Bread and Wine? Confession and Absolution are commonly received in the Ancient Churches of both the East and West before Holy Communion.
@litigioussociety4249
@litigioussociety4249 7 месяцев назад
@@adolphCat I meant the opposite of how you read it. I'm a stickler for absolution before the sacrament. I also prefer the traditional order of service for baptism in a Lutheran church, where the congregation says the Creed, because when someone is baptized all Christian witnesses are agreeing to teach them all things Jesus taught, not just the baptismal party.

Protestant churches rejected the biblical teaching of Confession & Absolution (public & private); while some Reformed/Presbyterians have an “assurance of forgiveness” in their liturgies; the preaching/teaching elder will never make the declaration “…I forgive you all your sins…” Anglicanism is a mixed bag depending on how Calvinistic (low church) they are.
@adolphCat
@adolphCat 6 месяцев назад
@@jeffdamec6930 You forgot about High Church Confessional Lutherans many of them still have Confessionals in their Churches and people still Confessing their sins to the Pastor and receiving Absolution. Do you wish to argue for Ancient Historical Christianity or do you wish to argue for Papism there is a big difference. You can find good God-fearing Christians in Roman Catholic Churches, Continuing Anglican Churches, High Church Confessional Lutheran Churches, Orthodox Churches, Oriental Orthodox Churches all fully intending to hold to the Faith and Practice of the Church as received from Christ and the Apostels. Yet, is the Institutional Roman Catholic Church a good organization to belong to? Is Papism even remotely Christian? How are Indulgences compatible with the Scriptures, the Pope of Rome, Judging the value of my Repentance, Good Works, monetary contributions to Good Works and Prayers. Is Christ or the Pope of Rome the Judge of such things according to the Scriptures? PS Are you not even aware that many Confessional Lutherans do not wish to identify as Protestants, but prefer to identify as Catholics, because they don't want to be classified along with Evangelical American Protestant types?

Dr Cooper .. I loved this video and it reinforces many things I've been learning over the past 5 years since I changed from Baptist to Lutheran. The only thing I don't get is how a believer can walk away from God's indwelling faith. I know the verses you are looking at, but logically the interpretation makes no sense to me. If God is the "arrow pointing down" and He creates faith in our heart, He sustains that faith in us, He adopts us into his family, He gives us His Spirit and creates a union with us -- how then can the believer turn away? I mean we were sinners to start with. We weren't even inclining our hearts towards God until He came to us and changed that. I can see how someone may intellectually try to follow the law (like the Pharisees) and even fit into many of our modern day churches. They may think they even have faith but perhaps it was never there. Anyway, can you please elaborate more or maybe you have other videos that address this.

We are judged righteous before God only by what Jesus Christ did. Our actions don’t make God love us more or love us less. But living righteous doesn’t make God love us more, but it will make us love God more and live in praise and thanksgiving. We always fall short by what we do and what we fail to do. In this flesh we will never be righteous. God moved by grace and we accept what God has already done. Our problem is doubt. not faith. We are given the measure of faith. The indwelling Holy Ghost has given us the same power that rose Jesus from the grave. Christian maturity is just believing what God says is true and not doubting.

Two questions to help me understand Lutheranism: 1. What does faith do prior to baptism? I understand that the baptismal regeneration view is far more nuanced then “unbaptized=damnation”, but to help me understand it, what happens the moment someone trusts Christ? What changes in them at that moment, prior to baptism? You spoke of justification as something that is either on or off essentially, so is someone justified at the time of faith or baptism? Do you understand justification as something that can happen at a different time then regeneration? 2. Seemingly unrelated, but would be helpful. You have talked a lot about Calvinism and your disagreements with it, but less so about Arminianism. Arminianism seems to be taking a step back towards Lutheranism from the Calvinism perspective (rejection of limited atonement, rejection of eternal security, etc.) but you seem to speak even more negatively about Arminianism. Can you explain why?

In this prayer, she takes the role of God. She replaces the Holy Spirit in dispensing all gifts and swaps out the role of Christ's advocating for sinners. Instead of on Him, salvation is placed in her protection, and loyalty is sworn to her and not God. The prayer even goes onto say that it is through her that the wrath of God is appeased on judgement day, and not the salvific atonement of Jesus. She is asked to obtain the forgiveness of sins, love for Jesus, and perseverance and grace, all of which can be found in God. And if any man claims that this is an intercessory prayer, the Bible says in Romans 8:26 that it's the Holy Spirit who intercedes for our prayers, not Mary.

Whenever anyone has asked me what it means to be Lutheran, I first ask in opposition to what? Lets be honest, Luther was the first to protest (oppose). Anyways, if a Roman Catholic, I state faith alone as justification with works only as the fruit of that faith. If a protestant, I state the means of grace and the real presence in the Lords Supper. If a Calvanist specifically, I state unlimited atonement and resistible grace. Furthermore, I state how our liturgy is ultra focused on the distinction between Law and Gospel. Of course, all these points are just a glimpse into Lutheranism.

I don't think your explanation of alien righteousness is entirely accurate. For Luther, the righteousness of Christ is "alien" not because it is outside of us, but because it comes from outside of us. It is alien because God infuses it into us by grace alone according to his eternal, unconditional election, and it is not given based on works or free will. But make no mistake, it is Christ's righteousness infused in us, not merely imputed to us. Luther: "Therefore this alien righteousness, instilled in us without our works by grace alone-while the Father, to be sure, inwardly draws us to Christ-is set opposite original sin, likewise alien, which we acquire without our works by birth alone. Christ daily drives out the old Adam more and more in accordance with the extent to which faith and knowledge of Christ grow. For alien righteousness is not instilled all at once, but it begins, makes progress, and is finally perfected at the end through death." (Two Kinds of Righteousness) First, notice Luther says alien righteousness is "instilled in us", not merely imputed to us. Second, Luther mentions that our alien righteousness is instilled in us throughout our life and is only perfected at death. Notice he does not say that we are counted entirely righteous in this life on account of faith, but only that we will be made righteous through grace alone (though not until after our bodily death).

Is there one person in every century since 33 AD that a Lutheran can point to that embraced the Lutheran dogmas?
@thejerichoconnection3473
@thejerichoconnection3473 7 месяцев назад
The separation of passive vs active faith sounds like a very ad hoc Luther’s trick to fit his own need of liberation from the obsession of saving himself. The idea that what justifies us is just the passive half of our faith, with the active part being just a nice but not necessary addendum, is Luther’s own invention that nullifies the gospel. If active faith is simply a necessary consequence of passive faith (you cannot have one without the other), you shouldn’t have any problem in saying that faith as whole (passive + active) is what justifies us. What’s even the point of differentiating the two? If instead active faith is not a necessary consequence of passive faith, then preaching that passive faith alone is enough to justify us is preaching a false gospel (James 2). At best, you fall back into the Catholic understanding of justification. At worst, your doctrine contradicts Scripture.
@pete3397
@pete3397 7 месяцев назад
You're issue is with the distinction between justification (the passive part of faith - we don't do anything, God does) and sanctification (the active part of faith - being justified we can now do works pleasing to God, cooperate with Him, and grow in our relationship, i.e. this is the working of the Holy Spirit with and within us). The point is that they are distinct, yet inseparable. The problem with not differentiating the two is that it is extremely easy to fall back into the Roman habit of emphasizing our own works as meriting salvation which is clearly contradictory to Scripture.
@thejerichoconnection3473
@thejerichoconnection3473 6 месяцев назад
@@pete3397 please, show me where the Catholic Church teaches we can *merit* salvation. The distinction between justifying passive faith and sanctifying active faith is totally artificial and unscriptural (James 2:24).

Although Christ atoned for the sins of the whole world it's not the case that the Holy Spirit works universally through the means of grace. The Father doesn't draw everyone to Christ by the Holy Spirit but only certain people who He wills to save (John 6:44), and those who don't believe aren't granted the ability to believe (John 6:64-65). Similarly Christ said to his disciples that they had been given to know the truth whereas others hadn't been (Matthew 13:11). Also conversion isn't resistible. If it was resistible then no one would be converted because everyone is an enemy of God through original sin and everyone would resist. When Stephen said that the Jews resisted the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51) he was only referring to the fact that they refused to accept the teaching of Scripture which is inspired by the Holy Spirit. He didn't mean they were resisting being converted by the Holy Spirit. Article 5 of the Augsburg Confession teaches that the Holy Spirit and faith aren't given to everyone through the means of grace but only given to some people. These are the elect who are predestined to be saved, whereas those not given the Holy Spirit and faith are predestined to be damned. This is Luther's teaching in The Bondage of the Will. It was the Formula of Concord which taught the universal operation of the Holy Spirit in the means of grace when this is unscriptural. God merely desires that all should be saved through his revealed will, but according to His hidden will He has predestined some people to be damned as Paul teaches in Romans 9.
