Hi Gabriel, In Iberia (Spain and Portugal), the Berbers, now known as Moors, created a highly advanced civilization and culture, famous for its art, architecture, and centers of learning. Moors, as the Spaniards call the Muslims, populated Spain for nearly 700 years. As you'll see, it was their civilization that enlightened Europe and brought it out of the dark ages to usher in the renaissance. Many of their cultural and intellectual influences still live with us today. "The subjects covered by the texts included medicine, astrology, astronomy pharmacology, psychology, physiology, zoology, biology, botany, mineralogy, optics, chemistry, physics, mathematics, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, music, meteorology, geography, mechanics, hydrostatics, navigation, and history " These works alone, however, didn't kindle the fire that would lead to the renaissance. They added to Europe's knowledge, but much of it was unappreciated without a change in the way Europeans viewed the world.

As a Moroccan ( mix of Arab & Berber origine ), i'm very proud of my country, rich of history, culture, architecture, art and more. Morocco is an ex-EMPIRE, and a Kingdom since many centuries, this video is just 1% of what every body should know about my beautiful Morocco. I invite every tourist to buy Moroccan history books before coming to visit and explore Morocco, and you're all welcome by the way. As Mr. Nourdine said, we're all from Adam & Eve and there is no difference between us, we"re all HUMANS, that"s why all Moroccans lived and still live peacefully no matter their color, religion, origine... Thank you Gabriel for sharing this video; and welcome again in Kingdom of Morocco.

Just loving this particular journey of yours. Just a little info. The term "Berber" is used predominantly by foreigners. Moroccans use it, however they would prefer to be called "Amazigh", which represents their true identity. The word means "free people", and they take great pride in that expression of their culture and traditions. Watching every last second of this, can't wait to see more.
@oghuzdynasty777
@oghuzdynasty777 2 года назад
Amazigh itself is even diverse. For example, in Morocco, there are Rifians, Shilha, Sanhaja, Ghomaras. I’m not sure if each of them are a ethnic identity, but each of these language are not mutually intelligible.
@Lau3464l
@Lau3464l 2 года назад
Very interesting! I believe the term "Berber" originated from the Greek word for "barbarian," so it's a shame that term is what is used, if that's true. I definitely see why Moroccans/Amazigh/Berbers would instead have the name "free people," with so much diversity living together peacefully.
@yodesuyo
@yodesuyo 2 года назад
@@Lau3464l true it comes from Barbarus which means all people who are not Greek nor Roman, at some point vikings and arabs were called barbarians. Also, the word berber doesn't exist in the amazigh dictionary, so only Amazigh is the real word
@Lau3464l
@Lau3464l 2 года назад
@@yodesuyo that is so interesting, thank you! Fascinating how language evolves... how we understand the word "barbarian" in modern english to mean savage, wild, tribal, less-than, uncivilized, uncultured... when really it just meant someone who wasn't greek or roman (which i suppose back then likely implied the definitions above, since my understanding was that in ancient times, greeks and romans believed themselves to be the only ones with culture and civilization and knowledge)

As I write this, I'm sitting next to a small prayer rug that I bought in a place just like that in Tetouan back in the mid-1980s. I too was a backpacker, so I could not buy anything larger but the prayer rug rolled up really small and made it home to the UK. That was an amazing trip: my schoolmate and I took the ferry from Algeciras in Spain to Ceuta and we met a young man from Tetouan. We ended up staying with him, sleeping on the floor of his room in the medina. I was awoken at one point by the full moonlight streaming through the window and looked out over the ancient rooftops before returning to sleep. Later, of course, we were all woken by the muezzin's call to prayer at sunrise. I have been back to Morocco twice since : for my honeymoon in 1992 (when we traveled down the coast from Casablanca to Essaouira, then went to Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains, then back to Rabat) and in 2019 with my teenage kids (when we flew into Casablanca, took the TGV-like fast train to Tangier, then went around from Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Fes, Rabat and home). The country is improving in many ways but still has massive challenges, such as demographics (all those young men looking for a buck), and climate change will only make it worse. They had an excellent response to the COVID crisis, though, with great vaccination rates.
