Learn with Experts is a special section of the Statistics and Theory Channel. Experts in language assessment, applied linguistics, bilingualism, and second language acquisition are invited to present on a topic in their area of expertise. The second guest speaker of the series is Professor William Boone.
Professor William Boone is a Professor of Psychometrics and a University Distinguished Scholar from the Department of Educational Psychology of Miami University.
Professor William Boone is an expert known around the world with respect to the application and teaching of Rasch Measurement. Bill earned his PhD at the University of Chicago where Benjamin Wright (of Wright Map fame) served as his PhD thesis adviser. Bill was a professor at Indiana University-Bloomington and is now a professor at Miami University. He has received numerous teaching and research awards. He lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
Dr. Boone has authored two introductory Rasch books: Rasch Analysis in the Human Sciences (2014), and the book Advances in Rasch Analysis in the Human Sciences (2020). The first book has had nearly 60,000 chapter downloads. A recent Scientometric review published in Frontiers in Psychology shows the book is one the most influential publications in Rasch measurement research.
In addition to these two books, he is the author and coauthor of over 100 published peer reviewed research articles. During his career, he has presented hundreds of talks concerning the application of Rasch measurement. When Bill is not writing about Rasch, he is a frequent presenter of Rasch workshops throughout the world. His primary professional goal is to increase the use of Rasch measurement throughout the world. He can be contacted through LinkedIn, Research Gate, and of course email at boonewjd@gmail.com.
In his talk today, Professor Boone discusses Rasch measurement.

Very helpful. But do you have explanation for dichotomous responses like Yes/No to test validity of a Problem Checklist?

So fascinating that Rasch's technique doesn't need being graduate student of statics . So applicable it is.

Our free and open-source cloud-based software handles dichotomous, partial credit, and mixed format scoring. It performs unidimensional Rasch, many-facets, fixed anchor equating, ANOVA and t-tests for ability estimates, and inter-rater reliability tests. Thanks for this video, Vahid. It'd also be very interesting if you could report on a study within applied linguistics that uses Rasch and the results can be interpreted.

Hello! I a have been trying to look for data that I can practice on using R. Would you mind giving suggestions on where I can find one? I hope to understand the Statistical theory on Rasch Model because I am considering on incorporating it with imputation techniques.

I wonder if there are disadvantages of using rasch analysis compared to the classic test theory?

For the male-female difference (25:40), can you explain why the middle items (bounded by the male and female measure's averages) are the one by which the two groups differ? My intuitive understanding is that the middle part is the items where males' and females' measures overlap the most.

I suggest you consider conducting differential item functioning analysis if you wish to look into the male-female differences.

Too much advocacy for employing Rasch, without explaining what it is. Didn't get to the guts of the matter until 1/3 of the video was completed. Frustrating to watch.

Sorry to hear that. I am not sure if it helps, but in the following video list, you can find 13 videos on how to do Rasch analysis and interpret the output, and use the output in validation research: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JVIa8jszCDQ.html

It was an introduction for beginners. I thought it was very clear, pitched well for its intended audience. He's, a great presenter, especially in this video. Rasch thinking. This idea is really interesting. I'd like to hear more about this. A framework?? Finally, his intro has given me confidence. I don't have a PhD, but an inquisitive mind, and found fun in maths perhaps far too late in life. But Dr. B, makes a refreshing case for getting on and applying Rasch anyway.
