This video will help those with an interest in deer develop the skill to identify and understand sambar deer sign. The pause button will come in handy to take a longer look at the various sambar sign.
Peter you’re an absolute legend. I really hope people understand how much knowledge you have and how willing you are to share it. RU-vid needs this to be the top result in the algorithm if anyone searches for Sambar. This man has forgotten more about Sambar than the average hunter ever learns. Look forward to seeing you again. 💚 John McCabe
Peter, i wanted the thank you for going to all the effort to make this video. This is comprehensively the single best resource i have found to assist my young fella’s education. He’s not interested in listening to me much - but absolutely related your explanations to his lived experience. Stutters an stammers be buggered, thank you!
Hey mate you are a legend. New hunter here been reading a lot lately but nothing like understanding like this. A true masterclass. Thanks so much 🙏 I’ll watch a couple of times and take notes for the field for sure 👍
Absolutely superb video and I learnt so much. Excellent detail, good humour, easily understood. From my viewpoint-the most informative video I seen in a very long time. Congratulations to you and thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!
Mate, I was glad to scroll along and find this pop up and see that it was 1.5hrs long . I knew it was going to be good. Really appreciate your efforts. I've hunted them 20yrs and I've found a hand full of little things you've said that I hadn't thought of or picked up on. Great stuff thanks a lot. I'll be watching it a few more times yet, simple and educational, even a bit of humour🎉😅
Most informative, constructive and practical demonstration of how to piece the puzzle together. Really enjoyable. This is a must watch for not just New hunters but a brilliant refresher for experienced hunters! 10/10, loved n subbed 😊
Brilliant stuff mate. Appreciate the time you took to put this all together and for sharing your vast knowledge. As an aspiring Sambar admirer/hunter from over in South Australia, this is easily some of the best stuff I've seen. Awesome.
Great video mate! Definitely would be a great watch for a hunter fresh to the scene. I've been hunting them for 4 years and picked up some useful tips myself. Cheers! 😁
Hands down the most informative video I’ve watched, the dedication in making this video alone just shows how all these hints and tips come from years of personal dedication and experience hunting with boots on the ground. 👍🏼🇦🇺
Thanks you so much for all the information I’m a young boy that wants to get into hunting and learn more but me parents aren’t really hunters and not too many people around me so I found this extremely useful again thanks so much
Thank you for taking the time to forward your comments. My older brother and myself also developed an interest in hunting at an early age, and like yourself, had no one close to us to help us on our journey. We were drawn to magazines books and articles with a thirst for knowledge. When we were old enough, we went hunting. We are now both in our seventies and hunt with a passion. If I can offer some advice. Choose your hunting companions and who you take advice from well, treat the game with respect and walk proud. Deer hunting is a great adventure and the path of a true hunter is not easy. At times you will be wet, you will be cold or battling heat and flies, you will be exhausted and pushed to your limits. But your soul will be rich, and the rewards will be priceless. I wish you well.
@@SambarHuntersEdge-lf2qq thank you so much I think I have already picked a companion one of my best friends and at school I try to read magazines and videos at home to deepen my knowledge
Moved to North East VIC 2 years ago. 10 Acer surrounded by dairy farms and state Forest. Deer bloody everywhere. Loving my new rural Life.....thanks for this mate. Top stuff
Phenomenal video with an incredible amount of info. It does go for 1½ hours but I was stopping rewinding, trying to absorb all the new things. Lots and lots of great Intel with stuff all waffling. Great job
Thank you for such a comprehensive coverage of Sambar, although I have been hunting them for a fair time you can always pick up some tips from others. All of your observations on wallow and preach/scrape activity is confirmed by my trailcam videos. Top job 👍, subbed and liked.
I cant thank you enough for the time you have taken to share this. I have really learnt some valuable information. I never thought I would have enjoyed looking at $hit for so long :)
Awesome video great tips and you definitely are a wealth of knowledge. I’m yet to secure my first and wish I could find open country like this. Cheers for a great upload
Thank you, as for finding open country. It took my brother and I years to sort out good stalking country simply by looking and putting in the hard kilometers (miles). I Eastern Victoria, high rainfall at lower elevation generally produces thick forest. Eg. Noojee. However high rainfall at higher elevation is often the opposite. Eg. Alpine National Park. Google earth helps but it still requires covering and physically searching country.
Awesome video peter, absolutely loved it and increased my knowledge, even made me interpret sign id seen on previous trips in a different light. thank you very much.
G’day Peter,I was getting my standard RU-vid Sambar Fix tonight and I luckily stumbled across your channel. What a fantastic, informative presentation on being able to find deer sign and decipher what it all means.Hunters both young and old will benefit greatly learning from your many years of hunting Sambar in Victoria.I hope that more senior Sambar hunters will have the opportunity to pass on their vast knowledge for the benefit of the next generation of ethical hunters.Much respect,Rob A.
Thank you Rob, I also hope more hunters pass on their knowledge. When I was a young hunter, I was fortunate enough to be set a good example about the value of deer knowledge. Passing it on is better than taking it to the grave. Good hunting Rob.
Funny you say that Peter.I’m currently passing on some of my knowledge to my daughter and my nephew about the fine art of all things Sambar/deer,bush craft and 4WDing.It’s a very rewarding experience for me.Cheers,Rob.
Great video mate! As time goes on the youths getting into hunting is declining and alot isn't our fault but some hunters not willing to help and share knowledge/location is adding to the issue. This is what we need modern times a nice informative video will attract young and old to your channel and video Thank you wish I had this when I first started took me 3 years to shot my first I honestly think had I bought the "sambar secrets" books then or had something like this to watch I'd have done it the first.
What an absolutely brilliant video mate! I'm a novice at deer hunting, recently got into it in the past couple months. I hunt varmints but deer is a whole different kettle of fish that's for sure! I went to Mansfield area during the Anzac long weekend and through to Jamieson but no luck due to lack of knowledge on my part. Didn't do research prior the trip but I definitely learnt a lot just by being out there and experiencing and exploring the area. I would love to if in the near coming few months to see if I could join you on your trips and learn from a veteran like yourself! Other than that, lovely video and very very informative! I have picked up a lot of important information from this video itself! Keep it up mate!
Hi Carr, it's taken me a while to reply I've been away hunting. Sambar hunting is a long road of learning but be warned it can be addictive. You are off to a good start in the Mansfield/Jamison area. Sambar Hunter's edge is also on Facebook as well as my personal page. Peter Burke. Feel free to contact me via face book. But be warned it can take me months to reply if I'm in the mountains. (No internet.) thank you for your comment.
Thank you so much for putting the effort into making this video for us. just a question, if I find all these signs and tracks that were shown in the video should I sit and wait or is it best to continue walking and looking for the deer from your personal experience
With sambar, I would not be inclined to sit and wait unless the sign was very concentrated and indicated an area of heavy usage by sambar. Such as crops or pasture that was consistently attracting sambar. I am inclined to keep looking for the deer in the general area where sign is present at a very slow pace. However, other deer like hog deer are a better sit and wait option.
Hi Peter at about 39 minutes you say its almost impossible to walk up on a deer in this sort of bush. Is that because it's very open and the deer can see you coming?
Nick, thanks for the question. If you have a look, (34 min mark) the bush although it may look open it is not with visibility down to about 20 meters. It is also very dry underfoot and covered with sticks and leaf litter making it very noisy. Sambar are extremely alert when they are in their bed. I for one would not have the ability to consistently see sambar under these circumstances. They would hear me and be onto me in a flash. Regards and good hunting.
Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge this is very informative and valuable information for a newbie like me * 3 years in so far and I still feel like I am only beginning.* could I ask you to show us how you scout our areas and what to look for on google maps, earth, terrains etc. I feel like the biggest obstacle is finding quality areas! Thank you
A video about selecting an area to hunt is on my list. A very long list I may add. However, there is no short cut to finding good country, especially for stalking. This is where recognizing sambar sign plays a significant role. Once we understand sign interpretation it helps us recognize good sambar country. It helps us understand deer numbers without seeing deer. From a stalking perspective, I try to hunt country with good to reasonable visibility. 100 meters is a good yard stick for a bush stalker. But even a good area is highly variable. If you can't see them, you can't shoot them. Google maps is useful, but it can be misleading.
@@SambarHuntersEdge-lf2qq you have a very good way of teaching and hence I think you will excel in your videos. The issue I have been facing is finding area with decent open planes to glass or look through. Most places are very thick or steep that I have tackled. I find plenty of sign and get honked, but just cannot execute a visual or a shot. I find it sometimes difficult to understand where these other youtubers find all these good open land that is not private 😅 with all these deer's running around openly.
The is some remarkable footage on RU-vid especially from the high country in the Alpine Park. But there are also a lot of videos where deer are not seen or taken. Just like fishing, there are red letter days but there's more black days. I'm not a big fan of very open country. If you are getting honked at a lot, it's because the deer is seeing you first. Most sambar stalkers move to fast, 400 meters an hour is about right for me, and I still get busted more than I would like! Sambar hunting is a long apprenticeship and there are no Master tickets. Just like super glue, stick with it.
"There are only two sexes" youll be in trouble on RU-vid if you keep up those outrageously provocative statements 🤪 Great presentation, so much to observe.
