I've recently heard it speculated that Cannonau might actually be the parent of Garnacha after it was imported into the Iberian Peninsula, as for the latest genetic studies. Any chance this is the case? I blind-tasted Cannonau lately for the first time and it felt super different from any sort of Garnacha I've ever tried
