This motor arrived from viewer Emma, who wasn't comfortable with the idea of trying to repair this one herself. I agreed to take on the challenge, but with the understanding that I couldn't guarantee that I could fix it. I was, however, willing to give it "The Old College Try" as the saying goes. I hope that Emma likes the result. I'm not going to chapter this video. I know it's 37 minutes long, but this motor took a long, long time to repair, and this video is in my benchside chat format.

Thank you, Bob! When you uploaded the video I just laughed when I saw the word “basket case?” in the title, I figured it would be my luck that the motor was a goner. But then I got to watch you revive it! It’s a fascinating process to watch, I’m glad you make these videos. Oh, and I sorted out a spool pin: one 3 inch 10-24 stainless machine screw, a 1 1/4 inch fender washer, and a wing nut worked! A longer screw would be better, as there’s barely enough space to accommodate a Gutermann sized spool, but I’m excited to have a solution that doesn’t require using a thread stand. -Emma

Ooh! Gettysburg-York would be ever so much closer to me! Willcox & Gibbs licensed their silent automatic design to several manufacturers, including National, which I have. Posi-Lok FTW! Bravo!

Bravo! So disappointing when you are almost done with a motor and then the last step of putting the housing back on takes FOREVER. The stars must need to align or something. It sounded great when you were finished!

On a brighter note, I got to come up with new combinations of profanities (under my breath, of course) while I cursed the parents of the designer of that device...

Nice job, Bob. I’ve had success stretching shrink tubing to get it over thick spots. I use a dental pick that has an angled end. Weasel it in and pull to stretch the shrink tube. Then slide the tubing over the thick spot quickly before it goes back to its original size. I’ve done this quite a few times and it’s worked like a charm every time.

Bob - truth be told I have never had a motor housing that "cooperated" going back together. Nine times out of ten they are a b**ch to marry together. One thing that sometimes helps is to use your heat gun on all your replacement wiring - really heat them good and wear gloves. This can soften the new bundle and help persuade compliance. It's also the step that amuses me the least in the entire rebuild. Nice job as always.

The missing screw isn't really a mystery anymore. I'm sure the last guy who had his hands in there threw it across the room when he was tired of struggling to get it into the blind, threaded hole... LOL

Guess what I rewired a couple of days ago? A G E Model A....😂😂😂. The intelligence test however, was the light fitting, and the footpedal. It took a sewing machine guy, an engineer and me, about 40 minutes to figure them out. The holes in the motor bearings are for oil according to the manual. I also had fun putting the darned thing back together, and then realised I needed the oil holes facing up...I hope your profanities helped!😉

Yeah, I knew about the oil holes, my problem in the reassembly was the dang plate that holds the brushes. It has to be just so, with the brush wires routed in just the right place. It probably would have helped if I had either taken a couple of pictures with my phone, or had I just looked at the video of the disassembly, but I got what shooters call "target fixation", and just wouldn't/couldn't take my eyes/mind off the work long enough to take a step back and see the big picture. It can and does happen! LOL

@@BobFowlerWorkshop I know that problem lol!That plate is a beggar, has to be not quite square, and quite soft too. I had the pic problem too, reminded self to try and tale photos before disassembly. But the damn phone didn't click when I pushed the button! Lol.

Thanks Bob. I knew you would get it working. Not fun, I am sure, but it is an accomplishment. Oh, and I am glad the earthquake wasn't here in NY or else I would have to move to Jersey!!! P.S. My home shook. I thought it was the boiler. Even felt the aftershock. I was looking for someone to blame. So thanks. lol

Just curious, why didn't you just test the armature and field coil first with a voltmeter to verify continuity? Then you would have known ahead of time that tie wiring was good to go. That way you could have saved yourself a few choice words. 🤣 Thank you for great video!

Excellent question... My sense of adventure, for one... nothing smelled burned, so I gambled on it being ok. If I opened it up and saw evidence of someone having cooked their dinner in the coils, I would have grabbed a meter. My gut told me not to bother, because, as we say, tape is rolling!

@@BobFowlerWorkshop I know the feeling "No Guts, No Glory" I would have done the same. I had a motor that looked good and when ahead to to do the rewire, only to say a few choice words myself. Afterwards it ran poorly and I got my meter. I learned that there was short or broken wire connection in the field coil after going through the whole process. Time to get a replacement motor!

In the theory of K.I.S.S., I use hot water and Dawn dish soap as a degreaser. I used to use a solution of the variety of Simple Green that is safe for aluminum, but honestly, Dawn is such a great degreaser, and because it's safe to pour down the drain, that's all I use now.
