I bought a JP-8000 when it came out and used it quite a bit in its heyday. Today, twenty years later, I got another one and I'm happy to reconnect with this "old friend"! In this video we take a look at the classic "Supersaw" waveform, but stay tuned for more videos that will explore the many other sides of the JP-8000's synthesis engine.

I remember trying the jp-8000 out in our local music store when it got out, and my girlfriend was standing next to me like, "when are we moving on?" sadly or luckily , i couldn't afford it back then... or else i might not be married to her today, I was 21. Today i have the 8080 and i love it. I'll never sell it, but her .... maybe? 😂

The Roland JP 8000 was called "The Son of the Jupiter" at that time when it came out. There is no doubt, that he had a major influence on the techno scene in the 90s. Personally, I had the JP 8000 and sold it back then. Years later, after realizing this bad failure , I bought the JP 8080. And I'll never give it up again. It is an important milestone in the history of electronic music. At this point, thank you very much for your great video about this wonderful synthesizer. If you have one, don't sell it! Many greetings from Cologne Andreas

@@colinodea3192 depends. they have a signature supersaw trance sound that doesn't sound like anything else, hitting a certain high register that's similar to 303, yet decidely not. 303 lines are mono and piercing, but JP supersaw lines are thicker, yet sweeter. Arguably the best example of its sound (and effect on music) can be heard in Darude's "Sandstorm" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y6120QOlsfU.html which is lierally named after the JP patch that made it (from the manual "P2:11 (001) Sand Storm"). It's a sound that is kind of not "in" right now, but any sound that's was ever as popular as that sound (and it was) was popular for a reason, so when used right it still gets that brain candy effect. it's not the best emulation of an analog anymore, but real analogs are cheap now anyway (which defeats the whole point of VA anyway), so the JP now stands as an awesomely programmable supersaw trance machine that sounds a bit digital, and that's one of the reasons it cuts through the mix. another good example of its sound: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UQn31Z_8syY.html If I could draw an anolgy as to its "datedness" (or not), i'd point out how "dated" a DX (FM) sounds...until people recently redicovered how awesome it is at bass/glitch sounds and suddenly its all over the charts again. The JP supersaw sound never did and never will go away. It is what it is.

@@colinodea3192 I came here from a Roland System 1 Supersaw demo that sounded quite convincing. What are other peoples opinions of the different Roland synths with Supersaw ? I love my JP 8000. I remember reading about it in electronic musician when it first came out and I do remember it being one of the first analogue modeling synths available. I never thought I'd be able to get on but I found my used in a stereo store after I had just laid down some money for the Korg legacy collection with ms 20 controller. I wasn't looking to buy anything else but I saw it and I was like how much is this? I don't remember what I paid. 5-600 at the time, being 2004. In all that time I had never forgotten about it and I bought it, stupidly perhaps at the time but that's all in the past now and I still have it and I still love it.

I have had my JP-8000 since the 1999 myself. It is a great sounding synth with a lot of powerful features, including Two layers that can be stacked, split or played one at a time, with the touch of a button. Independent stereo panning of each layer, Each layer can be assigned to only go to the left or right output. Different sequences can be stored to each key, Sequences and ARP, send MIDI notes out. Any combination of knobs/sliders can be assigned to be controlled by the touch strip, at the same time. The touch strip can be controlled by the expression pedal. The keybed feels great, fast runs can b played on it. Lots to love in the JP-8000. Have it sitting at a right angle to my yellow Studiologic Sledge. They are a great dynamic duo.

Nice to hear you mentioning the MS2000! I was repairing an MS2000R (swapping out some bad RAM) and during the testing of the unit, I fell in love with it, and bought it from it's owner. It's still a favourite of mine, along with the Prophecy (which you mentioned) and the Novation Nova Desktop (which also has a Super Saw).

I'm looking forward to seeing the MS-2000. I bought a 2000B after seeing Ladytron live with three of them onstage after their first album came out.

Actually it was during their third album, Witching Hour. Ladytron used to give those synths names (Cleopatra, Babylon, Gloria, Ulysses).

@@Mindphaser1 Thanks for the correction! It was definitely when they named them!

@devontodetroit the 2000B came out in 2003. It's very dark grey instead of the very dark blue of the first version.

@devontodetroit Because you realised that it didn't sound as good as it looked?!

@devontodetroit In fairness, there was nothing much wrong with the MS2000 and even allowing for the step sequencer buttons, I think it's amongst the better looking synths ever made. What price would a Yamaha AN1x go for nowadays if it had the looks and user interface of an MS2000 or even a Nord Lead, I wonder?
