An Open Adoption Documentary: The Story of Madeline Brooke

This is a heart-warming story of two families who opened their hearts to one another and the precious little girl who continues to melt everyone's heart all along the way. jourdanmariehat...
It is a celebration of little miss Madeline Brooke who was adopted and the uniquely loving way in which she is being raised. It recounts two families who unknowingly, but desperately, needed one another and how God wove a perfect plan together for all those involved. 'Perfect' in this sense does not mean without hardship, heartache or healing -- but it does mean the way in which hindsight eloquently articulates that something bigger than yourself is at work. It's the kind of perfection that comes along with the messiness of life -- when you can look at your deepest, darkest seasons of hurt and sorrow and genuinely feel that you'd endure it infinitely over again to wind up at the exact same outcome -- because on the other side, one bear hug from a one year old is indeed all the perfection you need in life.
It is in no way a stance on the 'right way' to do things. After all, ask any parent if they have found the foremost expert on the single right way to parent and you'll find no two answers alike. Every child is different. Every family dynamic is different. Every circumstance is different. This shared testimonial is simply 'our story'...and what a story it is.
At the time of video production, Madeline is about one and half years old. She has a brother who is also one. {More on that in the video!}. None of us know what the future has in store for us -- but neither does any family. All we know is where we've been and what we have today.
So what was the catalyst for doing this documentary (other than being giddy parents and wanting to brag about the cutest kids on the planet)? Well, we (the adoptive parents) tell our story all the time as does the birth parents. We have scrapbooks, blogs and all sorts of storytelling tools. But there was something that sparked a beaming pride that just couldn't be ignored. At our last adoption visitation outing, our birth-mom told us about her senior class project. She decided to take up teen pregnancy adoption education whereby she speaks to other pregnant girls who are faced with an excruciating circumstance. We couldn't believe her maturity and compassion for others. Here we all were, side-by-side, watching Maddie and her brother giggle ferociously as they navigated the water spickets in a community park. The birth-dad was picking up Maddie's pink sippie cup for the millionth time off the floor, the birth-mom was telling us about her college plans and senior project and my husband and I were taking video to capture the beauty of life's messiness. We couldn't help but silently praise God for his incredible grace on all of us. Did any of us think we'd be strong enough to do this? Did any of us think it was even possible? There's a pair of baby blue eyes -- that with one look -- will indeed show you that all things are possible....
If you are interested in our story, or would like to learn more about our documented footage, visit jourdanmariehat...
We hope that our story inspires others to the blessing of adoption. What once felt so unfamiliar is now the very core of our lives.
Production Credit
A big shout out to the incredibly talented team at Reel 9 Studios for capturing our story. It was filmed on 2 Sony Z1U cameras and edited on Avid MC by Caleb Mixon, CEO. He was amazing to work with and we highly recommend him!

Thanks for the continued support of our story. 3 years later - the birthmom came over last weekend to hang out. She wanted to share all about her college experience and recent milestones. We swam in the pool where Maddie showed off her new skill - cannon balls! Maddie and her brother freely swam between all of us. Our relationship has grown organically and becomes more beautiful every day. We share our feelings - happy, sad or otherwise and continue to respect and love one another.

This is such a awesome story. I had to give my little girl up for adoption 13 years ago and I have a open adoption and was promised so much but after I had to give her up. The adoption parents disappeared and was lied to. Sad

Thank you to everyone who continues to stumble upon our video and enjoys watching our story. This morning my sweet girl was in my closet wearing two of mommy's high heels (in her Mickey Mouse pj's) and her brother (my bio son) was in daddy's closet trying on his hats. They were parading in our room doing a fashion show. I couldn't help but think, "this is what life is all about." I hope I never ever forget a single moment of what each day is like with our two blessings.

I simply don't understand how a single soul could thumb down this video. So inspiring, touching, and beautiful. Especially heartrending was the way Autumn ended her letter with her name and not as "Mom". That is so noble of her. God bless all four parents, biological and adoptive.

Such a beautiful story! I am the mother of an adopted son who just turned 14. We see his “first mom” and her family several times a year. We are close and love her dearly. I am so thankful my son will always know who his birth mom is and love her. 1 Samuel 1:27

It's been two years since our placement and it gets more amazing each and every day. This weekend was our summer visitation with our incredible birth parents. We had such a great time and all of us treasure the get-togethers to celebrate all of life's blessings. Both of the birth parents are now in college and we couldn't be more proud of them. I wish I could bottle up this moment in time because our two toddlers are just the best thing on the planet. I could live forever in their snuggles.

Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing your story. We are in the process of adopting a little girl, and her mommy is 16 years-old. We know God has placed us in her life to support her through this pregnancy no matter what the outcome. We love her dearly! I'm thankful that a VERY open adoption can work this way. It's exactly what we have hoped for. Many blessings to you you and your sweet family.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. We are adopting a baby girl in May. Our birth mother is truly a remarkable woman. I am brought to my knees everyday in awe of GOD's precious gift. Not only are we being blessed with this sweet little girl, but we are gaining a sister for life who picked us to raise and love her baby. May GOD continue to bless your family and I pray for Autumn to have a wonderful life full of love, peace, and happiness. We will be posting our story soon!

I must say that is a lovely adoption. All the parents truly want what is best for their daughter. Autumn's letter says it all. The fact that the parents care for how Autumn feels as well as the baby, will mean so much to Maddie when she grows up. Maddie won't have to come to terms with her bio family, will know if she has siblings etc.. Very unselfish people they all deserve happiness.

I'm debating between three different sets of parents at the moment to adopt the baby I am carrying. I can't call it "my" baby because she's not mine, she's someone else's and I'm just carrying her. God decided that I would carry this precious life and some wonderful people or person would raise her. The baby was conceived through non-consensual intercourse and I know that I couldn't ever look at her face everyday knowing where she came from, yet she's still a part of me and I want nothing but the best for her. This, and many other videos, make me feel so much better about my choice of adoption. The thing that matters the most is knowing that your child has the best opportunities, love and life possible. May God bless you all.

Giving a child up is not an easy decision, I should know, I wasn't lucky enough to have an open adoption, weren't legal in the UK then, I think about him a lot n wonder how his life turned out, I hope and pray it was good, I wonder if he knows, thinks about me, at the end of the day somebody else brought him up but he is still my baby and my flesh and blood, it was a decision that was right for me at the time as I was very young, but as I grew up and had more children I regretted it and felt like I had abandoned my son which I still feel like, I am sorry for what you went through, that's a horrific way for a child to be conceived and horrific for you, sounds like your making the right decision for you, also a blessing for someone unable to conceive, I really wish you all the best and God bless

Well thank you Jourdan. It gives a mother a lot of relief knowing that the child they developed is being loved as much as they deserve to . My story is only a little different. I raised mine for a year and a half before I made the decision. And we've been fighting with my son's dad's mother for almost a year because she wants custody. It's a big mess but I believe that it'll work out. My son is where he belongs and I see him on a weekly basis.

Just this past week we lost the last two embryos upon unfreezing -- even before transferring them back into my womb. Such heartbreak and sorrow! I am sorry you've endured pain, but I'm happy you can see there are many beautiful, loving, supportive stories as well. We continue to grow as a family and love our birth parents immensely. This is a powerful story, someone must have been slicing onions (I cried!)... I am so happy for the couple who was able to adopt this child, and I'm pleased that the biological mother gets along well with the adoptive parents and gets to be a part of this. The couple tried "getting pregnant" five times in three years without success, but I think God had a plan: to introduce Madeline into their lives. I think I appreciate the story on a personal level because my parents adopted me from Romania a year after my mother died at a very young age (and the father was out of the picture), and I was in the Oradea Children's Hospital for months as an infant where my chances of growing into a healthy individual were slim. I am indebted to my parents for bringing me into their lives and raising me as their own, and I advocate for adoptions because millions of children around the world are in need of loving families. I'm actually studying in university to become a clinical social worker and I'd like to get some experience working with prospective parents who want to adopt children. Perhaps my experiences as an infant and toddler have made realize that life is a gift that can only be lived once, and in this lifetime I must help to better the human condition through nurturance and compassion for people.

This is a great video about a teenager’s unconditional love for her child and the adoptive parent’s wiliness to, not only open their hearts to the child but also the birth parents. Open adoption is a great alternative; hopefully this video will touch and educate others. Great school project Autumn, best of luck as you go off to college.

Jourdan Hathaway Thank you for sharing your story. It is truly touching. I'm in a situation where I'm pregnant with twins. I'm so truly torn about adoption. I love them and care about them but I don't have the means or support to care for them. I lost my parents in 2009 and I don't have the support of family or their father. It saddens me because I feel like they deserve better but I don't want to feel Like I'm abandoning them either. It's so truly heart wrenching

That's what happened to the adopted parents of my son and it was really sweet because the adopted mother genuinely cared so much about him that she was worried that bringing a second child into the family will take attention away from him, it didn't, but such a motherly thing to think.

that's exactly what I was thinking. Imagine losing five babies, only to have one right after an adoption. It makes you wonder how much stress factors into each pregnancy. I was very stressed during my pregnancy because my marriage was crumbling. My daughter, who I love dearly, is autistic. It's hard not to blame yourself. Anyhow, I 100% agree with you- stress definitely must play into it (not all, of course, but it's a big factor).

As many of you know we are approved to adopt! This Christmas season I pray for every mother in a tough decision, and every baby and child who doesn't have their forever family yet. Even though we are approved and ready to go... I don't know where our next baby is or where she/he will come from... However, I send out prayers and extra angels to watch over the mother and baby wherever they may be. I pray they feel safe. I pray they have food and shelter. I pray their medical needs are being met. I pray for the mother and her difficult decision that she will have peace in knowing that her little baby will be loved and never taken for granted. I pray for comfort in knowing that her baby will be safe and happy. I pray that she will know that we will always keep the mother in our prayers, even after we take the baby home. I pray that people can realize that she isnt a bad person, and that it is a selfless decision made out of love. Open the hearts of the folks around them, and take away judgment. Help them realize that she wants to keep it, but feels the child will have better opportunities in life than she can provide at this current moment. I pray that the people surrounding her... support her... and understand that she does and will always love this child as much as we do, just from afar. I pray she knows in her heart that her baby will always know of her strong love. Give her relief in knowing that her baby will have a mommy, a daddy, and 2 awesome big brothers to protect it and love it forever. Bless both of these precious souls, children of God. Amen. email us at adoptioncharlescarey@gmail.com if you are looking for a forever family... Bless you in this tough time!

Wow! What a beautiful story and family. I love kids and my boyfriend also but we really can't afford it. I had a complete hysterectomy last year due to health issues but I'm about to be an aunt and my boyfriend is an uncle. I know I will love my niece soooo much. All of you are amazing. ❤

This is a beautiful story. Im so happy you gave your baby wonderful loving people. This gives me hope for people . I commend you for choosing adoption over abortion. I hope you are all blessed and doing awesome. It's always good to be in depth with adoption. I think we should have it easier for adopting in usa so people who can't have children can adopt from our own country. I give all of you credit who adopt out instead of aborting. Your doing a wonderful thing.

A most special, blessed & heartwarming story indeed which shows what can happen when four adults decide to be open to the best potentials of shared goodness, goodwill & love between all of them to ensure that a little girl has the very best that God can provide for her from conjoined hearts of care: congratulations & hugs to all four of you!:) I am a 64 yr old Aussie birth-mother whose eldest son was adopted out as a baby in 1969 in a closed adoption before open adoptions were possible & before the inauguration of the Single Mother's Benefit, 3 yrs later, in 1973. Under new legislation 20 yrs later, which made it possible for me to trace my son through the name on his 2nd birth certificate, my son & I were eventually reunited on his 22nd birthday in 1991 - he is now 44 yrs old! His adoptive parents are good souls & I was invited to a couple of his interstate graduation ceremonies (he has five degrees & has been a uni lecturer) as well as to his marriage in another country & to his daughter's interstate confirmation ceremony. 5 years ago, in 2009, when his health deteriorated suddenly and his marriage ended, given that his adoptive parents were 10 and 20 yrs older than myself respectively & in ill health, they asked if I would have him live with me interstate & look after him. So, in a rather unusual & shared manner, I became a late life senior Mum at age 60 (!) & my 6 foot 4 inches tall son, with whom I have a deep emotional and spiritual bond, came to live with me, where he has been ever since, lol:) Our Lord has such a sense of humour when he arranges His beautiful jigsaw designs: our weekly mother and son date night is Sunday evening Mass together - his adoptive parents are atheists!;) Blessings all:)

Wow! Your story is beautiful and made me cry. I dream of the day when I can have a good relationship with all my 2 sons. I had an open adoption and through the years, communication drifted and no there is no contact. I contacted the agency to see if they had any updated info. and they said that the adoption agency would get back to me only if the adoptive parents had consented to contact. I hadn't heard from them. It's been a year since then. God is sooo good and I have faith that God is going to work it all out, in Jesus name.
