An Oral History of SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993)

25 years ago today, on December 15, 1993, Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List" (1993) was released on twenty-nine theater screens in the United States of America. There has never before been an in-depth Making Of documentary about the film, so I set out to consolidate as much useful information as I could find into this video essay, which covers every aspect of the film's production.
I discuss the initial deal which Spielberg made in 1983 with Thomas Keneally and Poldek Pfefferberg to adapt the novel "Schindler's Ark" into a film. All the screenwriters Spielberg went through. The directors he tried to pass the project onto before directing it himself. The casting process. The unusual experiences which happened during production. The vicious attacks launched against the film by Spielberg's own peers in the movie industry. The enormous acclaim it received when it was finally released, nominated for seven Academy Awards and winning seven.

Out of curiosity, could everyone please tell me how they first heard about this video? I'm not sure if it shows up on other websites, or if it gains its audience through word-of-mouth.

Saw movie for sale on Amazon (walled garden) for $15 so looked and saw that it is $9.99 on RU-vid and this was listed on the right side. This is excellent, It should be on the DVD.

Just looked up the movie and this came up and got curious. This may be the most inhumane thing done in the history of mankind. I mean we're talking, in the 21st century, of a state ordered industrial killing. I still, almost 100 years later, think this one of the most unbelievable and inhumane things I've ever heard. How crazy can a person or people be. Great video of examining the movie.

When Spielberg describes watching the Germans coming together with the Israelites to pray and his reaction to that, I wish everyone could feel that way. We cannot hold the current nor future generations for the past generations actions. If people could live by that virtue, we could have a peaceful world. This was extraordinary to watch. This video popped up as a recommendation by RU-vid's robots after I had viewed some WWII documentaries. I have to say...thank God for those robots! "Schindler's List" is one of the few films which ever moved me to tears. I could not stand up at the end of the film at the cinema. I just sat there and cried like a baby. That scene with the actors playing Schindler Jews morphing into the real survivors was the final straw in a building wave of emotions which paralysed me during the viewing of the movie. I could not hold in my feelings a moment longer. I wanted, at once, to hold each survivor in my arms to warm them with my heart and to let them know that I finally understood...that this Catholic Australian boy was now also a Jew...a Schindler Jew at that. Your work here is just brilliant...I have no other or higher words of praise for what you have done. You have encapsulated the enormity of this movie's message and emotions into 58 minutes. Sheer brilliance! I salute you and thank you. You have opened the door to my heart again and I have realised, once again, that for all the bad and superficial things I have done in this world I can, at least, be thankful that hatred and intolerance were not some of those things. God bless you.

So, it is with my deepest respect that I say: Thank you, Adam, this is marvelous! Thank you for this truthful and touching oral - as well as visual - history of the film's creation and reception. It would have been nice to have been able to view a making of SL.I would rank this as the greatest ever made. Above all others. But I am a little biased, having visited Krakow and the filming locations. I even went to the spot where the camera filmed the red coat girl scene. On a little rise that overlooks the buildings. Its very developed today and modernised but its recognisable even down to the balcony decorations where the soldier is throwing bags from it. The most moving. part of the location is the memorial square which has chairs placed in memory.

Amazing about the snow coming and going in order to make the film .... I believe it about everything going wrong on movie sets. In one of the lectures on Jewish history I've watched lately, the lecturer told about a guy who'd showed up at the yeshiva (school for studying Torah and Talmud) who'd been at one of the US military academies. He'd made the decision to go to the yeshiva when in their study of various battles, he asked the professor why they never covered Israel's battles? The professor had replied that Israel's battles were like no other and should not have been won; it was like a higher power was making them win.

Every time I hear this short sentence of the real Oskar Schindler, the subtitles make me cringe. He's not saying "people behaving like pigs" at all. He says "ein denkender Mensch, der mit dem inneren Schweinehund siegreich fertig wurde, musste einfach helfen, es war keine andere Möglichkeit". "Innerer Schweinehund" is difficult to translate ("Schweinehund" literally means "pig-dog"), but it refers to the inner part of oneself that doesn't want to make any efforts except for oneself (not too many, either), and that doesn't care about others. It implies laziness and selfishness. So he actually says "a thinking Human who successfully overcame his/her inner "pig-dog" just had to help, there was no other possibility (of action)".

Some time the decision is not there. It can come over time, piece by piece, as the events around you unfold. Then you see yourself doing something that, looking back, seems inconceivable. Then the moment is gone and you become you again

"Thanks for watching". No, Thanks are due to you for uploading your film essay. I cried buckets watching this. Let not the world forget the Holocaust, and may it never happen to other ethnic groups. May Yahweh bless Israel !

Great documentary! This should be offered as a special feature on all future video releases of Schindler's List. One technical problem: The audio is silent during some of the Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes interviews.

Thanks. That's a technical error which seems to occur on certain limiting devices. On other devices those parts work.

Tom Keneallys story about how he got involved with the holocaust survivor is just amazing I heard him interviewed one afternoon on Australian radio,his story is amazing.it involved a purchase of a new briefcase from a survivor who had written a draft thusSchindler's ark was born

@adamzanzie 3 года назад
Yep. That story was too long to tell for this video, but is worthy of its own video. Keneally speaks more about his friendship with Poldek Pfefferberg in his memoir Searching for Schindler.

@@joxp6971 Pfefferberg's luggage store was at Beverly Hills here in Los Angeles. Spielberg's mother, Leah, owned a kosher restaurant in that area called The Milky Way, which has only recently re-opened; I used to go there for lunch every week, and I met Leah a handful of times.
