I’ve always thought the best way to make a Sonic.EXE thing work is to focus less on the scary, and more on the spectacle. The mod focuses less on being this horror experience meant to make you wet your pants, it’s an actual game revolving a game of cat and mouse with a particularly determined and ruthless cat. Make it seem less scary, and give it more spectacle. Because as terrible as the story originally was, you gotta admit, it’s a decently intriguing premise.
Is it scary? No. Is it good? YES. And from a gameplay perspective, having the guy chase you down constantly and having to find monitors to keep him away is stressful as hell, which is far more effective than just screaming in your face. Proving that good things _can_ be done with even the worst characters. (Shame on that final jumpscare, though. You’re better than that, game.)
(Read more is important) Well actually you don't die in real life if you die in the rom hack but instead, the Sonic you're playing as will die for a while And will lose a life but if you focus And try to get static monitors in exe's world then it will turn back to normal world back instead of exe's world
I find it funny how I can hear Sonic.exe dying at the end of each act...like you're killing him by beating a level faster than he can kill you. Key is to remember all the closest monitors on each ACT.
Yes I'm late, but that would be a cool concept for a game in total, meaning you have like 50 or so variations of one cool game, some more changed than others. id like it!
It saddens me that I didn't know how to make hardware compatible music when I made the Hill Act 1 song. On the other hand, I'm positively surprised by how accurately they recreated it with the reversed playback effect and everything, especially now that I know it's not easy to make original FM instruments.
I want to see someone make a version of this where instead of spoopy mode and static, the screen just fills with water and the rings have pictures of Eggman and all the enemies turn metal.
imagine this but with the physics in sonic 3 and the motherfucking exe creature and how busy it gets during one stage on that thing. or sonic & Knuckles exe
Not really creepy, but I loved the idea of "you have to hurry up before the creepy thing catch you". If only it wasn't a model hack of Sonic but a creepy melted skeletic thing...
I feel that this hack is actually pretty horrifying, it just isn't in the usual sense. The horror moreso comes from the pressure and anxiety produced by the game of cat and mouse where the cat has wallhacks. If you've every played this mod, chances are you had been scared at least once when desperately trying to find a monitor as Sonic.exe slowly floated closer and closer. It's a kind of horror I like to call "anxiety horror" since the source of the scare factor lies in anxiety and pressure. Think of when a character in a horror movie is being stalked by the killer or goes into the basement. That sense of dread and anxiety you get is what I'm referring to. Difference here is that this game trades suspense for speed, allowing the tension to bounce around.
Lets see if im Right.. This is so based of Sonic.exe, You start on a Normal Theme, After of 12 Seconds the Theme turn dark, On the Darken Theme, The Song Theme are like in Sonic.exe, You start to lose Score (10 points per Second) the Time turns like if that was Generating Numbers Randomly, The Rings Count stay Normal but the Only thing, When you collect Rings on Darken Theme (They're Red on the Darken Theme), They instead make you lose rings, They're like Negative Rings (They give as Value -1), If you stay more than 10 Seconds on the Darken World, Sonic.exe appears, and if he gets you, He says you Hello and you lose a Life, So, Am i right?
This game is a testament as to why Amy Rose is such an under rated character in the franchise, she was awesome enough to lead Sonic through one of his scariest adventures yet without batting an eye xD I love this play through, thank you for doing this. I bet it had to have been extremely difficult and had plenty of retries with it. On a personal note, I think during the .EXE phase for the lack of a better term, I wish they would have played the American Sonic CD boss music or some variation of whether to slow it down to make it sound more eerie and when he dies like .EXE, have Robotnik laugh before evil Sonic appears on screen to laugh at you :P
In my headcanon, After Sonic manages to beat Act three of labyrinth some, The "Sonic Has Pass" would flicker out as well as the HUD of the game, with a text box in the bottom saying "NOOOO! I WON'T LET YOU LEAVE!" Resting to EXE to come chasing Sonic and possessing him, the latter would be sent to a dark void, while the former would say "Let's have fun, shall we?" Starting up the events of "Sonic.EXE: Darkest Struggles"
while not exactly scary, it's more effective than the actual sonic.exe creepypasta (even though that isn't saying much) it might just be me (or actual glitches), but it seems like sometimes the music and/or sound effects are ever so slightly off, and if that's intentional it's actually really cool it's REALLY hard to make sonic.exe scary, and while this doesnt succeed, it's still really cool
Hi Amy, I really liked this longplay and I knew what's going to happen at the final, anyway thanks for beat the game and give me an idea to beat Labyrinth act 3. Your great
Spring Yard Zone and Labyrinth Zone are the zones where it's like "oh no this zone is slow" Basically what I'm trying to say is that those two zones are the "you are fucked" zones Well maybe not Spring Yard but definitely Labyrinth Zone
If it were to brought up more seriously, (Though Amal Mogy that was funny) perhaps the item boxes allow sonic to travel from the .exe realm to the normal realm?
Shouldn't the final boss be Sonic Exe or something. I think it would've beena nice touch to add blood to the spikes and maybe add some "dead" rescued animals or something
"with a title like this, it must be interesting!" -screen flashes sonic.exe- "-long sigh-" the game creator has talent though, and your pretty good at the game.
I found that in the arcade out of nowhere so I played it on Sega Genesis and I kept losing. Not only that, when sonic.exe catch you, it’s game over but then, the I am god picture came in the game out of nowhere. Lol.
You know what would be freaky? If we all acted like the sonic.exe stuff isnt happening, and when someone posts it we just say: what do you mean? And thus there imagination goes wild
Wait, weren't there more stages in the original Sonic? Are those missing in this version? Anyway, wow. Haven't seen anyone make it out of green hill zone before :) Very impressive.
From what I've seen the game goes on but there isn't any graphical changes after the last zone in this video. Though Sonic.exe will still show up and you still have to deal with the monitors for the rest of the game. Not sure if you can beat the final boss though.
Yup, it's hard...for the wrong reasons. The Darken World teleportations are way too frequent, and Marble Zone is nearly impossible to beat due to the slow-paced nature of its level-design and the rarity of its powerup monitors. That RomHack seems pretty creative, but the execution is extremely sloppy...
miles better than 90% of most "spooky romhack emulator games" out there because it keeps it simple and doesn't transform it into walking simulator. Adds a new challenge, requiring skill, speed, and knowledge of the levels to beat. Could it be better? Yes, anything can. But it's damn good.
Honestly, this seems incredibly obnoxious, and difficult just to be difficult. It's an interesting concept to be sure, but it seems to actively work against the player, and try to throw them into the negative space as quickly as possible, not to mention the transition screen constantly interrupts the flow of the game. It would probably work better as its own game, rather than just a hack
