as a beader this I approve this as a very clear and concise guide to basic seed bead types. it'll be very helpful to any beginners as well as any family or close friends who want to buy an emergency bead bottle. I also really liked how you showed the difference in bead sizes between bead companies. the "standard" 11 is never quite 11, is it?

Thank you for this tutorial. It explains a lot for those of us still learning. My question is about identification of beads that have a number/letter after them. For example 8.0 25F or 11.0 C or one that you showed 8.0 617. Thanks for explaining
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 3 года назад
Hi, the first part of the number is the way Toho writes size. Many beaders will say "eight oh" or "eleven oh", and it's often written as 8/0 or 11/0, but Toho often writes these sizes as 8.0 and 11.0. The second part with the letter number combinations are Toho's catalogue numbers for their bead colors. For instance 617 is their code for olive dark green. Both parts of the code together give you these beads: beadaholique.com/products/toho-round-seed-beads-8-0-617-matte-dark-olive-8-gram-tube

Hello! I just came across your page and I thank you for the information! I just started making waist beads and I love the look of the smaller seed beads, as well as the "regular sized" (6). My question is, I noticed, when I make the waist beads with the colored glass seed beads, some if the colors seems to rub off a bit. Mostly the ones that are matte purple, matte red, matte green, and matte blue. The others are fine and haven't done this, like the clear, and pearlized ones you showed. Is his a normal thing to happen? Thank you!

Would you say, for an adult beginner, you'd start with a size 10 or 11 seed bead or larger? Would you recommend the same for a 12 year old beginner?
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 3 года назад
Size 11/0s are pretty easy to work with on a needle and they're a good investment; just about any bead stitching or loom project can make good use of 11/0s. I'd also suggest some 8/0s, they're small enough to be used as an accent bead alongside the 11/0s, but large enough that they can be strung by hand and used for easier projects like macrame bracelets if your younger beginner doesn't have the patience for learning stitches yet. Take a look at our designer palette collections, they're a good way to get a few colors of 11/0s that have been handpicked to play well together: beadaholique.com/search?type=product&q=%22Designer+palette%22

Lorraine: Hi Julie! Thank you so much for the great tutorial! Your voice is very relaxing and everything you said was very clear. Excellent video! I just have two questions. One, I'm doing crafts primarily of mermaids. I know you mentioned that a lot of crafters use the 11/0 beads. I've seen these beautiful crystal clear seed beads with silver inside. Do you happen to know the ones I'm referring to? I don't like to ask people on Etsy about them when I see them because I don't want them to think that I'm copying their work. Would you happen to know what size or type they are since there are, as you say, literally thousands of seed beads? I would really appreciate it. My second question is while I was watching your video, I saw these beautiful tiles (I think they were tiles). They were rainbow color and I believe they were on top of some black iridescent beadwork. I would have to go back and check. But they were the only ones there that weren't seed beads. Can you please tell me how I would find those tiles online and what they are called? Thank you so much!

We use a lot of 11/0 Toho round seed beads in our earring projects, as well as 2mm fire polish beads that are about the same size. We'll often feature 4 to 6mm bicones, rounds and pearls too . Those will stand out from the 2mm beads without adding too much weight to the earrings. Take a look at some of our recent earring projects. Here's an example using the 2mm fire polish beads, you can see they're tiny but each one stands out and sparkles: beadaholique.com/collections/beading-projects/products/california-fringe-earrings Take a look at some of our other recent earring projects too to get a sense of what beads we're using these days, they've all got their supplies listed: beadaholique.com/collections/beading-projects?_=pf&pf_t_project_status=0-Product-Type%3AProject&pf_t_technique=0-Technique%3ABasic%20Beading&pf_t_project_type=0-Project-Type%3AEarring&pf_t_technique=0-Technique%3ABead%20Embroidery&pf_t_technique=0-Technique%3ABead%20Looming&pf_t_technique=0-Technique%3ABead%20Weaving

Thanks so much for explaining all of this and showing examples. I have some seed beads that I bought years ago and never used, but I want to get some more because I only have a couple colors I want to use for a project I'm doing. I didn't realize that seed beads could have more than once finish or the difference in sizes between some of them. I have a question about creating your own designs with seed beads - is it best to stay with the same finish for each project instead of mixing finishes? Thanks for any tips you can share about choosing finishes.
@beadaholique

Thanks for watching our video! There are no right or wrong answers when it comes to using different colors or finishes in the same project. Hi! I just bought some Miyuki seed beads, supposedly size 11. The shop assistant said that 11 means that 11 beads will fit into 1 inch and that's the information I got when I googled. However, when I stringed my beads up, I needed 18 beads to make 1 inch. All the beads I bought said size 11 and they are all the same size. Another question I have is about the shape. Are Miyuki always cylinder cut? The shop assistant said all their beads were Miyuki, yet my gold beads are more rounded?
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 5 лет назад
Although many different seed beads use the same size numbers, there are definitely variations between manufacturers and styles of beads. Miyuki makes a few different styles of 11/0 seed beads, the 2 most popular are "round" and "delica." It sounds like you may have the round Miyukis, which we calculate at approximately 17 per inch. Miyuki's cylinder shaped beads are the Delicas, and the 11/0 delica will have about 19 beads per inch length-wise. Just in case, we have a seed bead size chart on our site: www.beadaholique.com/beading-resources/techniques-guides/charts-diagrams/seed-bead-size-chart

Don't the size of the beads refer to how many beads can fit in a linear inch? I thought I had heard that somewhere.

@beadaholique 10 лет назад
I have heard that too and I believe that that is how the sizing numbers were arrived at years ago but that does not really apply to the seed beads you get today. Just to be sure, I measured it out and 1 inch equals 18 Miyuki Delicas, size 11/0.

The needles we use most often for seed beads are these size 12 english beading needles: beadaholique.com/products/beadsmith-english-beading-needles-size-12-4-needles As far as thread tend to use two kinds depending on the project. We like Nymo nylon thread in size D for flexible, supple things like beaded fringe or loomed bracelets: beadaholique.com/collections/nymo?_=pf&pf_t_size=0-Size%3ASize%20D&pf_t_size=0-Size%3AD For more complex bead woven designs that need the strongest and thinest threads we use Fireline braided beading thread: beadaholique.com/products/fireline-braided-beading-thread-4lb-test-and-0-005-thick-15-yards-crystal-clear

Hello. What is the most suitable size of Miuki beads for brick stitch beading ?
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 2 года назад
For most of our brick stitch projects we use 11/0 Miyuki delicas. The cylindrical shape of the delicas lets the beads fit together tightly and the 11/0 size is small enough to make fine patterns but still large enough to be worked with easily. It also comes up a huge variety of colors, you can see the ones we carry here: beadaholique.com/collections/seed-beads?_=pf&pf_t_style=0-Style%3ADelica&pf_t_size=0-Size%3A11%2F0

@beadaholique
@beadaholique 10 лет назад
If they are seed beads the easiest way to see what size they are is to take one and compare it to another seed bead that you know the size of. For instance, if you have a tube of seed beads that says 11/0, then compare that bead to one of the unknown beads. If you have larger beads, you can use a caliper to determine the mm size.
