Self promotion? How ludicrous! Only insecure people with fragile egos like that Emerson bloke referred to, will read " self promotion " in Kishore's books all of which I've read. Kishore is perfectly correct that its ideas that he's been promoting in his writings, which by the way, have all been well supported by facts , evidences and good sound well thought out arguments. Kishore's books, in my opinion, are as insightful and as substantive as Lee Kuan Yew's . TQ for a candid interview which has further enhanced my respect for Kishore.
he is ridiculous to say "Anglo-Saxon" - does he not realise that the US is a melting pot and that Indians in the US mistrust the PRC too? The man is blind
I love both of you. This should be considered a benchmark for professional journalism. It's very rare to find two gentlemen treating each other with respect and waiting their turns in conversation. I salute both of you from my heart.
Prof Kishore is a great man of geo-politics. I have a lot of respect for him....How I wish there are more like him and George Yeo who can share their views of geo-politics from an Asian perspective....Most of the Western China and Asia experts albeit knowledgeable always sees China and Asia through a bias Western lens.
I've been following Kishore Mahbubani for several years, and after watching many of his interviews with Western media, I continue to be impressed by him. His intentions are genuine, and I fully support his efforts to bridge the gap between East and West.
@@LonganLee Kishore's issue is that he still praises old demons in the West. If you want to hear criticism of non-white leaders you can read the endless stream of it coming from white "analysts". But if you care to balance the conversation you're going to do a lot of defending and debunking BS, rather than criticizing these non-white leaders
@@dunzhen yes. The numerous praises of him here , imho, are from an IB related thingie which I shall not say too much. An intelligent person can tell from a mile away who are these posting these comments. China is overtaking but this is a natural progression due to the stage of it's development , wealth and more importantly the decline of USA due to past mistakes and it's ways are no longer able to lead the world. This means one day China will be overtaken by India the next one. How so, no country can grow indefinitely. USA was invincible for most of our lives. No one even imagined it being taken over by China decades ago. USA is too big , too costly, too much in debt, too messed up with it's flawed democracy and too costly to upgrade it's entire country. Likewise, eventually, China will be exactly the same if not very similar. For Singapore, many think the more and more expensive cost of living is a sign of prosperity. It will eventually come to haunt Singapore. It's all a cycle. The end is there waiting for all
Kishore & George Yeo are true thinkers whose understanding of history and geopolitics is far more superior than any politician in office. They should hold position in govt, we need expertise of these two. Of course they will hv distractors, people who are jealous of their popularity. Stay true prof, you hv tons of fans all over the world !
I'm a fan of Kishore but he lacks knowledge about the bogus Western narrative on so called Xinjiang genocide and the history behind the nine/eleven dash line SCS disputes.
The title is very honest. The interviewer is very undiplomatic. Kishore M on the other hand is a true professional diplomat who remains calm as personal insults are hurled upon him.He answered all his questions , very well with the favourite Kishore phrase " at the end of the day day". Has the interviewer a chip on his shoulder ?
@TacticalMayo What's wrong on different social media?! You are so shallow and narrow-minded! That's how one enriches one's knowledge and broadens the mind in order to have analytical thinking! Then according to your logic, we can't associate with anything Americans, including speaking or reading English, learning about their culture, trading,😢 etc.
My respect to Mr Kishore Mahbubani! He is a very intelligent, knowledgeable and humble personality. Love the way how he respond to critics in a calm manner.
It was great that difficult questions were raised by a “hostile” host. The honest and insightful responses showed the character and knowledge of Kishore. Thank you the host and Kishore for the conversation and dialogue.
The power of his argument was not to defend China but to let the facts and historical persorctives render the description of China in contrary to the common western narratives.
Kishore is Frank & honest in disseminating his ideas & tots. He is not self glorifying himself. Lessons learnt from this interview that you must have the right mentors to grow & prosper in life. He had the benefits to associate with founding fathers of Spore vi's a vis LKY/Rajaratnam/Goh Keng Swee.
If Mao is responsible for 40 million deaths ...in 2024...the more interesting question will be why Mao is still highly respected.. Any true chinese scholar..should be able to give an answers...😂
@@ganboonmeng5370 Mao was the one who united all the people of China and made possible the great increase in quality of life and prosperity we see today in China. Without the communist revolution in China it would be a divided country influenced by the divide and conquer strategy of the West. The communist revolution led by Mao provided stability, unity and laid the foundations for the prosperity China experiences today.
I like that Kishore mentioned he was used to being treated as a God in Asia. And that's exactly a reason the West wants China to collapse - they want the white worship to stay. They want their white privilege everywhere and to be at the top of the unspoken racial hierarchy. They love how special they're treated, and China's the reason East Asia and more aren't completely brothel countries and military bases for the West.
@@bobsmith3983 Don't be silly. Mao is the biggest traitor of China. He colluded with the Russians to set up the Chinese Soviet Republic in 1930 as a Soviet puppet state. Then, during WWII, he colluded with the Japanese. When he died, China was poorer than Haiti or some other African country.
@@bobsmith3983 For several thousands of years China has been the top dog in Asia without Mao. China doesn't need that Mao thing. It is only Mao is gone was China been able to pick itself up.
Too white/west worshipy for my liking, but relatively infinitely better than Westerners. Their environment is that of an unparalleled swarm of misinformation, so you can't blame them - or even Singaporeans. Western media and "news" is heavy there too
Kishore is my kind of PS(Foreign Affairs) any season, all seasons. Why? Because he does not shoot from the hip. He looks at issues carefully and explains his point of view in a proper manner with historical background and perspective.
@@TacticalMayohe’s taking the fight to the enemy. Why not challenge America on its home turf? RU-vid is the best place to fight American misinformation.
The interviewer should read or better still interview British professor Anthony Carty about the true facts of the history and sovereignty of the South China Seas before commenting on the issue in order to give an unbiased view.
There are vested interests in Singapore that would prefer a western-led, western-aligned South East Asia. Mahbubani is one of the few flexible diplomats in SEA that can see beyond rhetoric and ideology to chart an autonomous path for Singapore.
Peranakan babas like Lee Kuan Yew and Lee Hsien Loong are pro West. During colonial times, they were loyal to UK. I am not anti baba. Just stating facts. Goh Keng Swee was peranakan. He contributed to Singapore economic development. He was not anti Chinese. Since 1959, Singapore has been ruled by these peranakan babas. That is why Singapore is pro West, westernised, not Chinese and Chinese culture is being weakened. Mother tongue dialect language is dying out. Singapore has never been ruled by Chinese.
It all comes down to maintaining prosperity. If Singapore veers away from the West it would financially suffer. So Singapore leans West to essentially keep the current hegemon happy while maintaining relations with China. It's a balancing act these small countries must do to survive as economically they are mice in a small room with two elephants.

Kishore is a rare breed that emerged with such a humbling bringing up. With the partition of India his parents by chance landed in Singapur. He is not only criticizing West he is giving the West some tipping points to learn lessons from their mistakes. The leading western intellectuals like Kissinger and Huntington give blurbs on Kishore's books.
Agree. Mr. Mabubhani is very humble. He speaks the truth with much wisdom and experience! All should listen to him. All can learn so much from him. The interviewer is a biased journalist.
@@operagirlsong Because he has moved on to better things...yet he's still living rent free in your head lmao Don't worry, he has a larger platform now for all locals to enjoy 😉
Contrary to popular belief Prof Mabubani isn’t pro-China. He is first and foremost a diplomat and an academic who speaks based on facts, history and vision to the future. If he is, he wouldn’t be so popular and respected in the US. Contrary to Kishore, Mr Kausikan is bash, righteous, an admitted non-diplomatic critic of China, pro Western and took actions that harms Singapore’s interests. His writings and actions caused tensions between Singapore and China. It’s not surprising the quiet withdrawal of his ambassador at large title… in short he thought too big of himself. Unfortunately he has also fallen into the American narratives of linking anyone who spoken up for China and Chinese cultures as pro- CCp. That’s the most disappointing and surprising coming from a MFA background. But suppose as Singapore we need the likes of both gents to balance up both views and display a level of neutrality aka diversity of thoughts without expressing a position. We should keep to where we are now and learn the lessons in 2016-2017 and keep to Prof Kishore’s thoughts rather than Bilahari’s position to keep the peace with the superpowers. Bilahari however should be careful not to mix Chinese culture language history with Chinese communist ideology and united front strategy-actions. Don’t bring McCarthyism into Singapore! While he has not learnt anything half of his existence and culture, he shouldn’t be preventing others to find their own sense of 5000 years civilisation. Will he stop any Muslims’s desire to visit Mecca, Chistian to see God or Jesus upon death and Indian/ Buddhist aspirations for Nevana? He should be careful and think before he shouts away! All these aspirations and desires to find one’s identity and feelings has not conflict against a Singaporean identity and loyalty to Majulah Singapura
The truthfulness of Kishore M. is to be admired. He plainly explained that in politics, self interests rules. This is exactly why people like would fail miserably as a politician and also as a lawyer.
1. I believe the interviewer has an inherent bias against Kishore but he at least provide good questions. 2. I think the "charges" levied against Kishore should be pointed at Kausikan instead, especially the adjectives "smug" and "arrogant"....
The interviewers questions are pretty lousy. He tries to come across as a big intellectual, but has put together a list of terrible questions. In fact, the interviewer comes across as someone who is heavily pro western because all he is doing with his questions is being critical across the board, of Mahbubani’s works.
It seems like the interviewer is biased toward the West since he focused his questions to Kishore to explain his stance on China, trying to draw Kishore to say something against China. When the interviewer asked the question why the West keep inviting Kishore back despite Kishore being critical of the West, he seemed to insinuate that the West are open minded, tolerant of criticism and magnanimous since he also asked what can we learn from the West. What the interviewer doesn’t understand is that’s how the Anglo-Saxon fight; even in the midst of fervently trying to contain China, implementing all sorts of hostile sanctions against China, they still constantly try to engage with their Chinese counterparts. This is partly to gauge the Chinese red line and decide how far they can push, partly to distract the Chinese to think that they are open to negotiations and of course, their smug attitude to show that they are in control. In Kishore’s case, they are just trying to show that he can say all he wants but it will have insignificant impact; typical Anglo-Saxon arrogance.
This interview demonstrates how Kishore Mahbubani is eminently more appreciated in much of the rest of the world than in his own country. Neocolonial attitudes prevail, with western-centric mindsets among the liberal set. Also seems sometimes like a petty chance to take potshots in response to former perceived slights - from a longtime subscriber of IQ.
I mean you could always get off of United States social media because that's what RU-vid is and go to one of these commie social medias. See if they let you give your opinion 🤣
As far as the China Philippine UNCLOS arbitration case is concerned how can an arbitration case be held if one of the parties (China) is absent. Any decision made without both sides attending is invalid. So the UNCLOS "arbitration" never occurred.
This interviewer is clearly an extreme Anglophile with a thinly veiled hatred of China. Must have Western education and be surrounded by people like him whom still manage to believe in 2024 that the West has some moral highground. You praise China one time and these guys ball up their fists absolutely seething with rage. lol
Kishore Bhabubami is by far 1 of the best Spore has produced... A true national treasure of Spore. But people (both westerners /or Asians) who says he is self promoting himself are people who jealous over his success in influencing millions of people in the world.
Talking about nations with more flaws than others, i would point out to India. My goodness - the poverty, the rubbish on the roads, the poor infrastructure.
Unfortunately India's problems are insurmountable due to the mentality of it's people. Jayant Bhandari gives great insight into the mentality of the typical Indian and why India is so dysfunctional all the from the top to the bottom.
Kishore was gracious throughout whereas never expressed any appreciation. Don’t know why media people adopt prosecutorial style. To understand a man read all his books. Kudos to Kishore for taking his mom’s advice seriously since young.
Kishore ji, Only worse than being talked about is ...not being talked about!! Distractors are validators!!! Great job Kishore! As for your Mom's value system..I suppose most Indiana are successful all over the world because of the same Indian values and the family systems are 'Institutionalized' by the 10000 years old Indian culture! The British were busy colonising the British values...but never could understand why millions of Indians would come together every 12 years in Kumbh Mela... from thousands of years!!! Indian culture and the value of 'Values'..are that deep at the DNA level! I am sure you are passing on those values to your progeny's values! I have been living in the USA for over 45 years...and we all take our Indian cultures and the value systems for granted! Kudos to you for recognizing your Mom!
There are a lot of people that see Singapore as a kind of U.S. running dog. Always aligning itself with U.S. positions. Kishore Mahbubani at least can restore a bit of diginity to Singapore by criticising U.S.
There are 5000 American companies in Singapore . I have ask America ,European union to shift companies from countries that are pro terrorism ,racist ,extremists ,anti - European ,Anti - American,Anti - Jewish etc Companies should go to Philippines , India etc n also go back to their respective countries . I seldom will miss our great KMahbubani interviews. I certainly wouldn’t recommend others to hear this chief editor of IQ; Viswa’s future interviews. He isn’t knowledgeable & is a rather hostile interviewer. Kudos to Prof K Mahbubani 🫡
Viswa, go watch the talk by Kishore in UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the current ruler of UAE was listening attentively to Kishore! You think people like Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who a ruler of a small country in a very dangerous geopolitical location will listen to somebody who talk nonsense?
One IMPORTANT POINT worth clarifying, explaining & elaborating is the criticism of Kishore Mahbubani (KM) by Donald Emmerson (DE) of Stanford Univ, Head of South Eastern Studies Section or Department. (Listen to the portion, from mins 9.20 to - 12.33 mins for reference) The interviewer says Donald Emmerson .. was critical of Kishore Mahbubani, as not sufficiently critical nor acknowledging the huge number of deaths of the Chinese people - mentioned here as over 40 mn by the authoritarian Chinese Govt, that was directly responsible for these deaths..( other global scholars BTW have put the numbers that died at between 60-80 mn people who died between 1948 - early 1970s.!!) THAT was Donald Emerson's (DE) criticism of Mahbubani (KM) - .. with Emmerson considering him Mahbubani unabashedly praising & supporting the Chinese experiment & modern history & great achievements. Kishore Mahbubani, replies in this interview to the interviewer's question asking Kishore Mahbubani what he thought of that criticism.. Meaning - the interviewer asks Kishore Mahbubani (KM) - how valid he KM thinks.. was Don Emmerson's (DE) criticism (& apparent strong dislike ) of Kishore Mahbubani -(KM) how justified (or incorrect) he Kishore Mahbubani felt or thought was Don Emmerson's criticism. KM explains the criticism as his understanding, was that DE's criticism arose from his, DE's, eclipse in scholarly circles, from the time that people started listening to & following KM's writings & talks, presentations in scholarly circles globally.. And that this seemed to be a personal reaction, (effectively of pique, pettiness & spite), against KM who had eclipsed him (DE) on the global scholar stage - globally - re. the SE Asian subject matter & stage globally. So much So that DE was now scored as of much lower status & relevance in academic circles than KM .. ESP on the Asean & Chinese subjects, politics & academics - globally. Though KM doesn't mention it, there well could be embedded, hidden/ concealed/masked hostility by DE against KM - & hence criticism by DE on KM's views, writings, presentations, positions etc - based more on - enmity, jealousy or even racism - white man vs Brown man, Or Westerner versus Asian - views, divergent views, ascendancy of Asian views over western white man's views on Asian subjects like China & ASEAN.. etc etc.. OR just plain old petty jealousies.. that have resulted in this smouldering charged criticism by DE against KM. As KM also points out- DE was limited to Indonesia, that was his focus, competence sphere, and the reason he emerged into the academic talk show global circuit - as his specialisation.. Indonesia. That DE was no Chinese scholar... and didn't have any credentials or expertise or track record in that area of understanding, knowing &/OR Decoding the China history & experience.. __ And THAT is REALLY the KEY POINT in answering DE's criticism of KM.. and his views & explanation of the Chinese experience, miracle.
Good video. Mr Mahbubani shoots down all the questions that come across as antagonistic in the most eloquent, incisive way, without any negativity towards the host which goes to show the level of confidence and conviction he has in the consistent message and ideas he has been putting forward in more than two decades. Respect you so much, Kishore.
Kishore is one person who states fact as it was/is/will be without being influenced by so many propaganda . So far his opinion has been spot on . If anyone wants to be misinformed like most western journalists and panelist is to read western media . One notices these western interviewers always stated a point (which are fakes) as though they are fact.
Kudos to Kishore Mahbubani for succesfully gliding with ease diplomacy a not so friendly. Interviewer. He is Asia's pride and will be read and quoted hundred years from now.
@@bobsmith3983 Really! Lavrov is the best for the job. Wang Yi's vision is symbolic of China's vision which is the role of a judicious leader and a solemn peacemaker.
Having been to China innumerable times over the last 40 years, I find that Mahbubani analysis and observations are "spot on" free of malicious propaganda and anti-China political claptrap. Both American style Democracy and Chinese Socialism under the leadership of the CPC have positive and negative aspects but suit their respective populations. I personally prefer Democracy; however, I cannot deny the fact the CPC has been responsible for delivering 700,000,000 Chinese citizens out of poverty over 40 years, a feat to date that has never been accomplished by any other country in recorded history. China has 5000 year history that continues to evolve and change. The last 100 years has just been a second. Thank-you Kishore for you constructive comments and discourse.
Minute 2:31 "One would think that (those who downloaded the book )are mainly Chinese" I wonder WHO you had in mind in your "one" comment? Mr. Interviewer.
Great interview and I appreciate Mr. Viswa asking DIRECT often inconvenient questions based on reality rather than trying to be nice, but also he DOES NOT INTERRUPT, as we see so many many times in Western interviews.. This is a GREAT DIFFERENCE by how EDUCATED people act and react, rather like our western friends trying to show off HOW LITTLE THEY KNOW😂😂😂
I can appreciate the value in having more confrontational interviews from time to time, but you can tell this interviewer is an extreme Anglophile with a thinly veiled hatred of China. His questions show he's just indistinguishable from any other Western "expert" talking about China, and I don't need to explain how deluded they are
I dislike interviewers who cite criticism of China in Tibet but then doesn't allow Prof Mahbubani to respond. It's (Mis) leading. Also the Mao era mass famine...Churchill killed millions in India.
Some of the best brains are rooted from India but what is more important is their courage to stand up to the truth against all the odds and Singapore would be much better off if more of them are given the opportunity and platform to further their contributions to integrity and justice.
While we know Professor Mahbubani decided to retire from his leadership position at the LKYSPP on 31 December 2017, ie some months after he authored what he now considers a poorly worded commentary piece titled "Qatar: Big lessons from a small country" on 1 Jul 2017. It would have been an insightful though inconvenient question to ask if Professor Mahbubani had been the un-named senior member of the LKYSPP who had received supposedly “privileged information” (from the expelled LKYSPP colleague Huang Jing) and conveyed same, to the Singapore Government. Given Professor Mahbubani's writings and lectures about the PRC, to hope that you had asked this question, is not absolutely out of the blue. An opportunity somewhat missed in my view Viswa. To refresh our memory. MHA's press release dated 6 Aug 2017: "....(Huang Jing) gave supposedly “privileged information” to a senior member of the LKYSPP, in order that it be conveyed to the Singapore Government. The information was duly conveyed by that senior member of the LKYSPP to very senior public officials who were in a position to direct Singapore’s foreign policy. The clear intention was to use the information to cause the Singapore Government to change its foreign policy...."
The interviewer is actually a dumb smug himself, hahaha. Asking makeup questions. More a fault-finder approach. And did do his proper homework before the interview. If 5 to 15 or 20% readers don't like his books, its from a personal perspective and possibly limited understanding and knowledge. Kudos to KM for his responses.
KM, ultimately it will surely turn out to everyone, you had been right all along. And you know it that Truth must remain steadfast, while falsehoods only prevaricate from the truth.
I did not know about Kishore and I was hungry for what he spoke in his dialogues _ that I wanted members in my circle to hear about him. I gifted Kishore's book "Has China Won" because my gut tells me "Yes". We need our grandchildren to learn from such men
There seems to be a rough divide in Singapore between pro and anti China. Indians and Malays are leaning towards anti China side while Chinese are more towards pro China side. PAP is pro U.S. and more neutral on China. I don't think PAP foreign policy reflects Singapore public opinion at all. But now U.S. is supporting the genocide in Gaza and China is helping to make peace there, I am wondering whether Malays are now more pro China.
Lol Singapore than than 10% non HAN so they don't matter. Hans will surely support china . But PAP knows this is not the time to show open support to China .
This show is titled well. It's certainly a show of inconvenience for the hosts bias opinions on China and his complete ignorance on China and below par geapolitical analysis & understanding.
Well done Viswa, you are still the true journalist who asks relevant questions people want to know, and intelligent follow ups, even if they are inconvenient (as your channel name promises).
Mr Mahbubani facial expression collapsed after he got the uneasy qs about Security Council and his voting for war. I was worried he could collapse. Hopefully he had some whisky to help him to pull himself together and otherwise who know?
Mahbubani - a sycophant par excellence! The only NON CHINESE sindhi indian singaporean to speak voluntarily on behalf of CCP! He stays clear of criticizing the CCP and the present day self anointed dictator! Yes! Books are STILL worth reading, and reading is a skill you must continue using, as comprehension and a good speed to go through many books is always supported by regular "practice"!
Singapore is still quite a tribal society, the respective ethnic groups will still be more aligned to certain countries. Chinese will back China, Malays will back Malaysia and Indonesia, Indians will back India; Peranakans, Eurasians will back West etc. All of these groups have their grievances. We simply cannot BS ourselves and ignore these facts.
