1. Mamma Mia would be fun because of cool ABBA vocal harmonies and unisons. 2. Cats, because a flamer is never late, their "innocent banter I swear" arrives precisely when they mean it to. 3. Sweeney Todd, because that's a musical I genuinely want to go see.
In the Heights would be cool. a little different as you’d be comparing the movies and their musical adaptations, but The Wedding Singer and Legally Blonde would be fun.
taking Stupid With Love, an upbeat song with an African Calypso melody and making it as subdued pop song with no personality is a good summation of everything wrong with modern Hollywood
I was SO UPSET when I found out that they cut the “Oh my god I love that bracelet, where did you get it?” LIKE WHY DID THEY ROB HER OF THAT ICONIC LINE?? Also I completely agree with Cady being emotionless. Like she needs emotions yk? :((
I literally clicked on this thinking this it was some big creator with a ton of followers. Idk how this doesnt have more views cause its really good and really intersting.
Fun fact : in the 2024 version of “sexy” when Karen is trying on costumes you can see the outfit from the og mean girls where there was the holes in Regina’s shirt!
Honestly, I would remove 2 points for 2024 because they cut Gretchen and KAREN’S iconic part… It did truly feel like a hate crime, plus, -2 points for 2 cut parts from 2 amazing characters
I think the Lebanese comment shows how affective a gossip can spread as the entire movie wouldn't of happened if Regina didn't mistake Lebanese for lesbian
@@blissonthebeachJanis says that she's Lebanese at the end of the movie because Kevin G only dates women of color and asks if Janis is Puerto Rican. That has nothing to do with Regina thinking that Janis is a lesbian. Regina explains her reasoning earlier in the film that she got a boyfriend and Janis became insanely jealous because she had a huge lesbian crush on her. For all we know, Regina never even knew that Janis was Lebanese. And even if she did (and she thought it meant "lesbian"), she would've asked follow-up questions that would've no doubt cleared up any misunderstandings.
@@mylesmarkson1686 no it's an age old joke mistaking Lebanese for lesbian (cite The Golden Girls, Acorn Antiques, Bend It Like Beckham). And it's revealed at the end of the OG film that she's been playing into the rumour and is actually into guys (exhibit Kevin G)
@@moxstoleyoursocks2241There was but it’s hardly anything like the original Mean Girls. Totally new characters and the plot is kind of similar? It’s been years since I watched it, but it definitely doesn’t deserve to be called “Mean Girls 2”
The OG stands as the best imo but the 2024 version gets way too much hate, I thought it was a lot of fun! Bebe wood is so underrated as well and overshadowed in the new one as Gretchen
I feel like they did that with quite a few of the songs. Some of the energy was completely off from what the tone was meant to be (Stupid With Love and Revenge Party to name a few), but they also just cut out or changed the lyrics to some of the songs as well which, if not careful, can completely screw up consistency and the flow of the musical and overall tone
I don't hate the 2024 version for trying to male radio-friendly music; it's a creative idea, really (especially seeing how theatre/film music is different, anyway); It's just that most of the songs fail to sound like GOOD radio songs. And as LOATHE as I am to say this, "Mean Girls" is one of the few films I could've seen as a jukebox musical if it didn't already have great original songs.
2024 deserved a point for the way I’d Rather Be Me is suddenly cut off by Regina getting hit by the bus in the background because that had me genuinely laughing
I think the only point I would give to the movie musical it’s the appearance of Cady. Angourie Rice really looks like your average teenager and her slow evolution into Barbie plastic seems real. Lindsay Lohan was always so pretty in a very conventional way, you will never believe she would go unnoticed in that high school.
not really. in the beginning of the og katie was obviously pretty, but she wasn’t styled in that way. she didn’t do her hair or wear nice clothes. like yes lindsey lohan is gorgeous but they didn’t make her out that way. angourie rice looks normal at the beginning of the film, but at the end i honestly don’t think she looks like barbie. her clothes suck, i’m still confused about why her hair was always in a side part, and she’s just not pretty in the way that would make you popular. it’s harsh but true
@@taylorswiftfan1423 I think the side part was to draw parallels to Regina's hair. You'll notice it's wavy too. I agree with the OG, though. If we are talking about the progression of how her style (Whether or not it's actually good because, arguably, the costumes in the whole musical were pretty bizarre and rough) changed, then I can see the girl next door turned superficial plastic is reflected there. But if you're going to say Angourie isn't Barbie like, I think we need to address that Renee isn't either. The plastics in the new iteration don't have that same feel as in the original. I actually prefer the original, however, there are details from both that I think are superior. In the end, the perfect version would have elements of all of the above.
In the theatre, hearing Jaquel Spivy's angelic voice lifting up some lovely French ballad, only to read the subtitles on that last measure?? Whiplash. The 4 mph exit of Damien's Grandma's scooter -- iconic. Like no one else even talked about these little moments, love that you included them!! May I add two 2024 Karen lines for consideration: 1) the group therapy scene when Duval threatens to cancel the spring fling and everyone's going crazy, Karen saying "I object" and then just immediately sitting down again 2) Gretchen being normal about Regina's zit and being like nooo you totally don't have a zit, then Karen's vocal fry just going "it's sexy ;) like a face breast."
I feel like the first mean girls was the best one from the outfits to the plot to the message of the movie. The outfits showed personality and was very recognizable, with Karen, it showed her “slvt” persona bc of her miniskirts, and her dumb blonde. The plot was unique, something I never would’ve expected in a girl-world-power like film. The message of the first movie was a bit unclear but it still got across, it was about losing yourself, getting sucked into a made up “girl world”. I feel like that was almost 100% ignored in the recent film.
@@annevanderelst247Yeah, it's such a lame song, and it doesn't make any sense because Gretchen doesn't think that there's anything wrong with her at--She's proud to be in the top-clique in school and #2 on the todem-pole. She even says so herself... "I'm sorry people are so jealous of me--I can't help it that I'm popular".
@@mylesmarkson1686 although I guess the whole “I can’t help it that I’m popular” thing could be her way of covering up her insecurities! But no, I do still think the song is not needed
10:45 I genuinely think they should’ve replaced it by reading text messages out loud, like it’d also work with sending the wrong message to the wrong person.
As clothes are subjective, it's a point that's hard to judge either way. Personally, I don't see anyone dressed nowadays much less 'popular girls' like the Mean Girls are dressed in the original film. If they used the same type of clothing in the 2024 film, the creatives would likely get hate from people because a) the clothing is out of style, b) it looks like they are just copying the OG which wouldn't make sense when the 2024 film isn't just a copy and paste of the original. It's a modern take that implements aspects from the first film and the musical, whilst having enough differences (e.g. those of which being pointed out in this video) that make it stand on its own. Plus, the press content for the 2024 film highlights in some interviews how the cast had a lot of input into the clothing their characters would wear. They care about the characters as much as we do so they made the decisions based on their view of the characters, the new style and generation of the new film, and what they felt most comfortable and 'right' to wear in the role. So as much as opinions disliking the clothing is valid as it's a subjective subject. I think there's a lot more to it in regards to why the clothing was done correctly.
I really appreciate this video for valuing each one on its own while also comparing. People shit on the new movie or even the broadway musical with no real reason.
You know I came into the new 2024 movie with no expectations of it being good but I recently watched it since it’s in paramount plus and in the end I enjoyed it! However I think the OG film will always hold dearly in my heart haha
as a gen z who has no nostalgia for og mean girls (i only just watched it last year) i still think that the og was better, but i definitely don't agree with half the criticism the new version got. i really enjoyed the new movie as it is and the songs were so fun (avantika as karen is GOAT). and also now im gonna think of joey king when i watch tsitp so thank you for that i feel enlightened
I disagree with like most of your points lol but it’s SO nice to see someone who actually likes musicals and has seen all the versions making one of these videos. THANK YOU
If i had to pick my favorite version of each character, it would be Cady: OG movie Regina: 2024 movie (this is a completely biased take btw, this ones because she's played by renee rapp) Janis: mix of OG and 2024, I don't like musical janis Karen: OG movie Gretchen: mix of OG and 2024 Damien: OG movie or broadway musical, it's kinda 50/50 Aaron: OG movie
@@2ndlife.furniture.restorationit's not good unless you're a TikTok annoying modern audience that's social bubble is only online. Or "chronically online"
justice for do this thing.. my fav song.. i love the mathletes theyre so fun, do this thing also had such a cool message for cady "doesnt it feel good to have come this far based on something you did not the girl you are" which helped set up her attitude in i see stars
it’s funny because the original DC production of Mean Girls the musical had tons of original lines still in, “i love your skirt” “boo you whore,” the word vomit/vomit, the dog biting mrs george’s boobs. things just got cut and reworked unfortunately to make it less than its original 3 hour run time. if you can find any sort of audio, i would definitely recommend listening.
I think they change it roars to what ifs for two reasons : to show from the start that the songs will have a difference vibe, and because of the actress. I don't think she could have sing it roars, and also, Cady is not as excited in this version than in the musical version and I don't know if the song would have sound as good without the vibe it has in the musical.
WAIT, ACTUALLY! you forgot to count that one dediction fromcthe Movie Musical! Effectively making it A TIE between the OG film and the Movie Musical! Isn't that neat? Though rather be me should TOOTALLY gain a point for just existing, it's such an empowering song! P.S. I absolutely LOVED the video!
im suprised you dont have 1k subs, you deserve it, your content is entertaining to watch and how are you SO UNDERRATED?? YOUR SO PRETTY AND I LOVE YOUR VOICE AAA
The French joke with Damien was actually a cameo set up for the French teacher, who played OG Gretchen in the 2017 OG Broadway. She went on to star in Emily in Paris, so I'm guessing that's why they made it a French class.
honestly, I'm biased to like the musical version because a bunch of my friends were in a local production of it recently (so I knew Cady, Regina, Damian, Gretchen, and three of the ensemble Members)
As much as I love what’s wrong with me it tells us what we’re already learning but at a slower pace. It feels like they only kept it and sexy cause they cut Gretchen and Karen’s part in meet the plastics. Avantika and Bebe served and were robbed of their meet the plastics moment
I’m just realizing some way they could’ve done the 3way call was to have Gretchen give one to Cady saying “this is how we communicate, don’t want our chats to get leaked now do we?”
@@annevanderelst247 that’s weird. I was really surprised that it came out so early to. When I saw it would release on the 12th of Jan I thought I would have to wait until at least Feb to watch it. It also came on digital earlier then in the US
I did enjoy this video very much, but when you were discussing the POV, I think its important to note that in the case of the stage adaptation, "narrators" such as Janice and Damien, doesn't necessarily mean all knowing. There are narration types that are just as "clueless" as the audience when it comes to the situations at hand, as Cady was in the original. We are just getting plot insights from them, kind of like we do in the original when they are telling her all about school, which was then turned into "Where Do You Belong?".
I guess my issue with it is that them being narrators doesn’t actually add anything. With Cady being the narrator we get an insight into her personal experience, how she navigates this new world full of twists. Janice and Damian mainly tell us things that we could’ve figured out ourselves e.g. like a time jump or random jokes that are irrelevant to the plot!
What’s wrong with me is super important to the characterization of Gretchen and Regina so I don’t think they should have cut it but they didn’t do anything correctly with it (or anything else in the movie >.>) so it sticks out oddly.
8:50 I watched two slime tutorials of the musical and one of them HAD this joke, and the other didn't, so I guess they removed it later. but it was there at first
im sorry but i feel like, in the 2024 movie, they took away all the broadway essence in the songs😭😭😭. The only ones that i actually liked are "cautionary tale" and "whats wrong with me" because are the most similar songs adaptations to the musical.
I was also surprised how the original actor of Cady Heron played the announcer in the math competition and made a reference to the original movie saying that this only happened once because she went through it😂
My ranks for all of them 1. OG Mean girls 2. Musical Mean girls 3. Movie/Musical Mean girls They just have all the bad stuff. I say this Everytime. They took the bad stuff from the musical and left it in but then took out the good parts of the musical too?? And they also didnt have any good jokes bc the jokes they already “used” (since in comdey its a small “rule” that u shouldn’t make the same joke twice) and they couldve made whole new jokes which they kinda did but also none of them landed. (I mean i thought The girl who played karen, sorry i forgot her name, she was kinda rlly funny other than karen being super dumb.
The fact people ONLY just found out about mega girl just cause of the weird musical baffles me honestly and they act like huge fans when they’ve literally only watched it within a year for the first time 💀
Personally, my favorite has to be the Broadway version because I love the actors in it, love all most all the songs, and think overall it’s a great show. Then again two of my favorite actors (Barrett Wilbert Weed and Erika Henningsen) are in it so I guess that’s a big reason to.
a tiny and subtle change that is definitely nitpicky but i really hate is that in the original film Janice said at least her and Regina know their mean but in the musical its changed to at least Regina didnt pretend to be her friend (strange because id say she did). The change from Janice calling herself a mean girl and saying Kady's issue is she pretends like she's not to Janice herself pretending like she's not a mean girl completely missed the point of Janice's character in my opinion. The right finger song really hammers home how i dont think they got her character AT ALL. The point is that you dont have to be popular to fall into the trap of backstabbing and dragging down other girls for your own gain. One thing I really like being added to the musical though is when Karen talks about the ""rule of twos". I just thought it was really sweet and insightful that still fit her character's "dumbness" while showing that she is pretty much the only one who is seeing nuance in the situations because she knows there's two sides to everything happening. Karen's always been my favorite (though there is close competition because i think a lot of the main cast is well written and three dimensional) and it gave a bit of depth to her that I liked. It's way better than the "my boobs can tell if its raining" thing from the original movie. Her positive outlook and just having a fun time attitude even when maybe thats not the expected or reasonable response is why she's my favorite (that and her delivery in every iteration just just so well done). So I feel that dialogue was very in character for her while also giving her more than just the "dumb pretty one" in her personality. That being said, while I feel like the original is better in my opinion and also didnt muddy the message as much as the musicals, the stage play is absolutely a guilty pleasure and i vibe to the songs so hard (even the ones that are objectively not well written) and some of the changes were just....sorely needed. it's just fun. Both are just fun. I'm glad we got both versions even if they have their flaws. (I havent watched the movie musical so i cant speak on that one)
I haven’t seen the stage show but didn’t agree with many of the points for other reasons (I *liked* What’s Wrong With Me, for example) but the whole review/comparison is pretty good, and the “fuck off” line at the end is why I subscribed.
I think the main thing with the 2024 version that in my eyes lowers the points isnt the plot or the acting, but the costumes and set. their clothes dont portray each character, especially karen and gretchin. also, kady starts as too much of a "popular girl" at least in looks like as soon as she meets the plastics shed decked out in skinny tops and a whole shien fashion catalogue. honestly, the only one who wore what kids actually do wear in high school was ironically janice.
I did like the few moments where they exactly copied the outfits from the original film! Like Cady’s blue checkered shirt, or Regina’s black long sleeve with blue bra straps poking out ☺️
There is something about the original one that just just makes it look perfectly crafted, carefully made detail by detail. Every subtle scene, implication, from the lines that seem unimportant to the clothes and the way the characters walk and move; they all help and are part of the plot in a way. Regina's fake nice persona is so well executed and written along with Rachel's McAdams acting and attention to detail herself. She reminds me of actual real life people that act that way. Even if its a comedy. I've never been a good fan of chick flicks that take place in schools, and Mean Girls is not the kind of movie i would watch more than two or three times because i avoid teenage dramas and toxic movies. But its definitely well made and i could write an essay on how everything is so thoughtful and it looks like they took their time writting it and perfecting it. Something we have been lacking a lot in nowadays movies in my opinion, taking their time and caring for details.
Your star wars comment got a sub out of me XD and I loved your review!! I personally liked the musical movie and "Before Someone Gets Hurt" HAD ME IN A GRASP IN THEATRES
Didn't expect you to say Belgium at the start😂🇧🇪 I was like, I live in Belgium girl, the release date couldn't be worse than me ... and then you took me by surprise 😜
Yes me too girl she sucks at singing finally someone is talking about how the actor who plays Katie sounds like a weasel and a 3 year old girl who sucks at singing she sounds emotionless every time she's singing and she freaking nuked I see stars that was one of the best songs in Musical and she ruined it and also the people who picture because you seriously didn't learn if she could sing before you picked her everyone give a boo to whoever picked her and also I hate how they removed stop from the movie because Damian's actor is really good at singing so I wish he got to actually sing stop but no we cut it out which I wouldn't hate if Kay's freaking actor could actually sing Broadway but no we get garbage
This review missed what i think are my two biggest opinions on the new film. #1) apex predator!!! They botched it. They did it at the school instead of the mall which was completely unnecessary in a film especially. Its one of the stand out numbers from the show, its vocally abd visually powerful but also storytelling-wise it shows regina from Janis's perspective and then switches to Cady's. She is secretly enjoying Reginas power and being caught up in her power and popularity. Because Angorie is not up to the vocal demands of the song they just turn it into another Damien + Janis exposition. Which is not the point of the song. And Damien inexplicably gets the lines of although Janis is great she does not have this power etc. It makes no sense for him to praise regina and put down Janis because those are Cady's inner thoughts of being impressed and excited. All wasted with bad choices. #2 lets be honest 75% of making this movie was to showcase the goddess that id Renee Rapp. And nowhere is that control, angelic voice, dangerous but intoxicating sexiness and sheer presence more portrayed than in Til Someone Gets Hurt. This is probably the best song from a directing and staging standpoint in the new movie.
Without the OG, we wouldn't have the others which is why it should win. Though I do love the Broadway musical and the songs. I was jamming to the soundtrack ❤️ Also, 7:39 cracked me up, I hated the 2024 Aaron - he's so ugly and I also thought he looked like Joey King 🤣 I subscribed to your channel - you deserve more subs and I hope it continues to grow. I can agree with most of your points !! I'm pretty sure the Danny devito joke was in the Broadway one, too 🤔 Also, when the OG would get a point for good reasons, for some of the points, the Broadway musical also had those reasons. But I don't think the Broadway musical would get points. However, if both the Broadway musical and 2024 movie had a reason in common, they both would be rewarded. I feel like the Broadway musical has a nice combination of the OG movie mixed with theater and amazing music. WAIT, THE 2024 VERSION HAD THE MOST POINTS... 😮 WHAAAAT. That's So not FETCH.
The og got less points because it doesn't have songs. But it is not a musical. I don't think that is legal to give the others extra because they have music, but alright. I will go back to yappsville now. PeAcE ✌
