I also love that the prince got to stay his way as well. They didn't go the "all handsome people are evil" route. Honestly, I think this did this moral better than Shrek did.
Add this to my list of "good movies I actively avoided because the marketing was so terrible that I not only wasn't interested, but didn't want to see it." >.>
@CarrieTooTired The ones I have on the top of my head are Pixar mostly because Disney has been doing them dirty with marketing lately. So Turning Red, Soul, and Elemental all make the list. All of which I decided to watch eventually just to have a laugh at a bad movie and all of which turned out to be pretty good actually. But Nimona also made the list. The marketing for it made me not care so hard that I actively just did not want to watch it. I ended up watching it because of a video essay and it's one of my favorites so the marketing on that one is actually a crime because it made me not want to watch something that turned out to be one of my faves. The marketing on Nimona wasn't actually that BAD, but it really did not capture any of the elements that made it interesting? It just seemed like a generic boring movie with some cute art and I just didn't feel like watching something that I figured would make me sad due to wasted potential. Sometimes I watch something that isn't bad but could be a masterpiece and it makes me sad so if marketing makes me feel like potential is going to be wasted then I tend to avoid it.
I think one of my favorite things about this movie is that it flips the “ugly man gets total babe” trope on its head, and especially without a bunch of sexist and fat phobic jokes! That trope is the bane of my existence >:c
I first heard about this film on a Brazilian channel but the video said that the film was extremely fatphobic just as the promotional material implied, but then I saw other videos talking about this film and what really happens in the film and that it is about inner beauty and body positivity. As a person who hates beauty standards, this film is 100% something I will forever appreciate for existing. Also, Snow White is super adorable!
4:30 Snow White isn't fat, she was just bulking before her cut. 9:18 But she learns the valuable lesson that pursuing aesthetics isn't worth sacrificing gains. This is a powerlifter's origin story. 💪
Red Shoes is a PERFECT example of how you can meet in the middle, you don't have to be all outdated and cheesy like the 1937 Snow white, but you don't have to go all woke "Snow white is tough and doesn't need a man" like the remake apparently is going to do. I don't approve of either the old one, nor the remake from Disney, that's why I often gravitate towards non-Disney movies like Red Shoes, Raggedy Ann & Andy Musical Adventure, One Stormy Night, Storks, ect.... there's a lot more non-Disney movies I like than Disney ones! Yeah, obviously I'm not much of a Disney fan but you mentioned Red Shoes, and I'm here for it! Also, keep in mind that this is a Korean movie and the fact that they made it about plus size body positivity, really is groundbreaking! If you don't know, for the last 10 years throughout the Kpop and Kdrama industry, the beauty standards have always been tall, skinny and curvy. There were literally Kpop idols who starved themselves and couldn't dance because they needed to achieve that perfect skinny waist! Western countries are more accepting to plus size and thicker women, but the Korean beauty standards are different and are just now starting to show more body variety in Kpop and Kdrama. The fact that a Korean movie showed plus size body positivity is a big deal, let alone the fact that they totally nailed it! Snow white didn't keep the shoes accepted herself, and Merlin thought that her plus size self was beautiful! This movie is such a beautiful and cute adaptation of Snow white, and I like how they also took inspiration from Shrek, and this movie isn't considered "too girly" so that everyone can enjoy it. This will be the Snow White that MY kids are gonna grow up with, not your ancient Disney cartoon version from ancient times.
The advertising did this movie so dirty. I absolutely love the self acceptance and body positivity in this movie. The best part is that its not the main female character learning this lesson its the male lead which is so rare. ❤
@@Cheezitnator Same, it's become one of my favorite movies because of him! I never would have given it a chance otherwise, and I bought the DVD as soon as it hit Walmart shelves
I really like how the shoes have an effect sort of like the one ring, were they are suposse to entice you and you can't take them off. Because it shows both that Snow isn't perfect, even if she genuinly loves herself in her own body she is still affected by how the world treats her when she is Red Shoes, and has some trouble taking the shoes off, but also when she is also able to overcome this when the people she loves are in danger it shows her strenght of character how different she is from her villan. I think in general this movie does a great job in how it gives their characters flaws.
I love this movie so very much, so it was so much fun to watch this video. I still remember how psyched I was back in 2020 when I saw your Cursed - Merlin mep part, because I love that idiot so much. Very well made, Carrie!
It's kind of awesome how Merlin's magic fight scene requires him to NOT be seen by Red Shoes. The extremely vain character cannot be seen during his moments of "glory" and they do not therefore define nor affect his relationship with her.
I think the marketing was trying a “what if both Snow White and the Dwarfs were cursed” bit, but by pointing out that Snow White doesn’t fit the conventional beauty standards in a “joking manner” it just ended up going against everything the film is trying to say
I'd never heard of this movie before watching this video. I'll be honest I was quick to write it off as a low budget knockoff like the weird CG Pinocchio movie was from last year. But I'll admit, this movie looks pretty good! I mean, it's kind of a jumble of movies that have already been done before but it looks like it has its own identity. The animation quality is way better that I expected, the voice acting is pretty good, the story is cute, the message is wholesome. I could see this as a late night guilty pleasure watch. Good review! Happy October B-Day. :)
@@CarrieTooTired oops, sorry about that. And of course, happy birthday either way! Gonna go give this movie a watch. 👀 Also, "yassified" is the best way to describe the entirety of the weird mind trip that is that movie. XD
Carrie... I NEED TO GO TO BED IN 20 MINUTES BECAUSE WORK IN A FEW HOURS, WHY, OH WHY?!? Anyways I wish you happy birthday and thank you for your hard work! I'll make sure to share my thought in a reply to this comment when I can watch it o/
The scene where Snow White is being turned into a tree? No cap, I play it on repeat. The VOICE ACTING. MERLINS VOICE ACTOR CRYING OUT DESPERATELY?!?! I CRY AT THE VOICE ACTING BEING SO RAW AND BELIEVABLLLLEEEE!!! THE DESPERATION!!!!
oh my god I've never clicked on a video so fast in my LIFE i absolutely love this movie it's one of the few movies I've actually PURCHASED on youtube instead of just rented to watch it any time i want
I really like this movie too, and I’m glad it’s getting more positive representation. I hope more people see it. It’s really good and I love the Romance and just the mess of loving yourself.
I loved the movie when I first watched it ! I did watch it in my native language, and the dub made it better for me, and I love Snow's soft voice. Merlin was very entertaining to watch and I liked the triplets more. I was genuinely so deep thinking about all the implications about the tree that I kept the movie paused for a good while just to Think about it and then promptly kicked my feet and giggled when Snow and Merlin got together, they're so so cute !
YES! i Watched this movie after the Saberspark video about it and honestly I love this movie, and it sucks that the marketing flubbed so badly it portrayed the movie as exactly the opposite and now most people didnt even watch it and just remember it as "that fatphobic movie" I dont hear people talk about it enough!
I LOVE this movie! I found out about the terrible marketing after the fact and was so disappointed cause this movie is literally so adorable and deserves more love!
This has been one of my favorites since it came out, I remember when the DVD hit walmart shelves I was ON THAT. I will forever suggest this one during a movie night when people haven't seen it
I was really hoping that Snow White/Red Shoes was going to be friends with the princess that Cursed the guys and was going for her to help promising her friends her beautiful princess friend could help end their curse with her magic only to find out its the same woman that cursed them. Also I'd like it if Red Shoes/Snow White was more appalled at how she looked with the shoes on it kinda showed when she was complaining about how much she used to be able to bench.
YESSSS SOMEONE ELSE TALKING ABOUT RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS ❤😭 I love this film so much and the character designs! Also the little parody of other fairytales in this movie are my favorite. 😊
As someone who’s been considered not conservatively pretty to then become more conservatively attractive I can relate to Snow here. Whereas soon as you’re pretty people notice and care what you have to say. I love seeing her confident in her body and having healthy relationships.
I actually watched this when I was younger we had it on the app where you buy movies and I really liked it but forgot about it intell now, I’m super glad that someone talked about it and gave me the memories of the past
I have yet to watch the video, and I just wanted to say, hell yeah for this movie getting the recognition it deserves. I'm pretty sure I discovered the movie by randomly coming across a clip or an edit that made me curious about it, so I watched it some years ago. I remember really enjoying it! I only learned of the awful marketing after watching the movie. I hope more people will watch it in the future ^^
This movie got a lot of unjust hate for its terrible marketing. I feel like something got lost in translation or someone didn't actually bother to watch the flim when writing the English marketing. It's such a shame. This version of Snow White is one of my favorites.
Pausing this to go watch it! Thanks for another vid carrie ❤ So, having watched it, i found it to be fun tho a bit generic. The message is good and snow was a very nice main character. But it still felt a bit superficial in its themes. The romance to me was really blend. Still the thing that mostly fails to get me is the post tangled overused basic ass art. Seriously, as a tangled number one fan since its release, i hate this artstyle. Its so restrictive, boring and everywhere! The ending scenes with the sketchy artstyle were sooo charming i kinda like that the most from the entire film 😅 Also, the red haired cook is the best guy. About beauty, i think howls moving castle (my favorite) deals in a more subtle and more enjoyable way with it, in my opinion. Still im happy i watched this and im happy to talk about animated films always. Pls keep posting these videos!! Hey, after i posted the comment you talked about the credits, extremely cute right!!! And of course, happy birthday!!!!
Thank you 💖 I do agree that a lot of non/disney films are too comfortable w/ the “Tangled art style” when it comes to their character design, but it’s basically a The Little Mermaid situation where a critical and financial darling influenced future works… bc they found what works ig 🤷♀️ that being said Jin Kim did work on Tangled so his style coming through here is inevitable
I hate how they advertised this movie. I hate that at one point I avoided it because of that advertising. I'm glad I know differently now. Also advertising really is never factual, it's so hard to determine something on ads alone.
