This USB-C hub from Orico appears to do it all: fast 10Gbps USB; ethernet; HDMI; card readers; power delivery; AND an M.2 SSD slot! Why take both a hub and an external SSD if you can combine both into a single device? Let's try it out.

Orico are a great brand...and until I today didn't know this existed...perfect for a spare M.2 drive that I'm upgrading from. Great video and review. All the essential details I needed. Thank you.

It makes you wonder when a device is considered a USB hub with m2 SSD instead of an external storage device with extra ports. This hub is appealing as THE one dongle laptop companion.

Orico CDH-9N USB-C Hub with M.2 SSD made in Korea or China? looks like a great item.

Maybe the thermal pad is supposed to go on the bottom as cooling fins on top. Just a thought. I'm probably wrong. 😁 Great video.

Fair guess but that would be attempting to transfer heat into the board, which wouldn’t work or be a great idea.

These usb-c / thunderbolt hubs are becoming more and more popular each day, maybe some company will come up with ways of incorporating next gen external graphics co-processing for gaming and productivity 'on the go'.

I was talking to a friend this week wondering why I haven’t seen anything like this, using a 2019 MacBook Pro for work with a 256 drive, our external drives and dongles are a necessity

This could be highly productive on a shoot for rapid video injest and previewing. I think this is exactly what I've been looking for! I just hope it will work fine with an iPad Pro.

It does work with iPad Pro. 👍🏻 Transfer speeds are a little lower, but plenty good enough for what you suggest.

I did have CrystalDiskInfo open in the screenshots, but I didn't reference it in the script because I'm not sure it updates in real time. I will remember to do that next time 👍🏻

Ok now add a batter to it. Like that would be so sick to have a High capacity battery bank thats also a hub. add some backup storage to it would also be sick

These are more like "to-go" swiss knifes sort of things, I have one similar from another chinese brand and I can do a bit of everything, however, indeed, this is not a docking station, so do take that into consideration, however, instead of having an adaptor for an USB A + something else, this allows you to have an SSD, and several very useful ports. On the go, you rarely use everything at once anyway

Yes, heat is a concern for these hubs, specially with Ethernet ports, and now with NVME drives. The Samsung 1and 2 TB are much cooler.

Just tried it on mine and it didn’t work… but then neither did my other little USB-C hub. I need to do some more testing.

I found Orico products highly unreliable. I had 1 3.5" hdd enclosure, 2 2.5" enclosures. They're all failed, leaving me with drives with messed smarts and lost data. Dont by orico.

Did you test the Ethernet speed? I know some devices can’t do full speed on a Mac via usb (ok via thunderbolt)

It seemed about right in general use. I will double check when I get chance.
@hoagy_ytfc
@hoagy_ytfc 2 года назад
@@ConstantGeekery I've taken a punt and ordered one anyway, will report back on Ethernet speeds. My current dongle only gets about half-speed plugged into USB, but full speed plugged directly into Thunderbolt. Something to do with different chipsets and bad Apple drivers, apparently.
@hoagy_ytfc
@hoagy_ytfc 2 года назад
I'm not getting full Gbps out of it. I have it plugged into a USB port on the back of a Studio Display - no other devices are plugged in there, though of course the 5K display itself takes quite a bit of bandwidth out of the Thunderbolt connection to the MacBook Pro. It's basically about the same speed as my UGREEN adaptor
@altosack
@altosack 2 года назад
@@hoagy_ytfc - Considering that TB4 is 40 Gb/s, the 5k60 display is 23 Gb/s, and, in any case, the max. DisplayPort bandwidth taken out is 25.92 Gb/s, there should be _plenty_ left for a 1 Gb/s Ethernet.
@hoagy_ytfc
@hoagy_ytfc 2 года назад
@@altosack yeah, I think it’s down to bad macOS drivers. I’m sending my hub back. As Dayv says, the thermal pad doesn’t seem to make proper contact with the case, and my SSD was throwing errors several minutes into a TimeMachine backup.

*Is it possible to connect this hub to my router thru the RJ45 provided on the device and use it as a “network drive” with the ssd installed without having a PC/Mac connected to it?*

This looks like a useful accessory, but it's so disappointing that Apple chose to make all these dongles necessary. I had to buy a new M1 laptop and I badly miss my 2015 Macbook Pro. There's nothing about the new computer's user interface that is an improvement over the older designs.

Why do you need any dongle?
@scottparis6355
@scottparis6355 2 года назад
@@nnnnnn3647 Need one to read sd cards. Used to be included on the Mac Pro. Need others to adapt all of my USB accessories, hard drives, label maker, USB card reader, etc, etc. And the new machine only has 2 USB-C ports, so you can only have power and one other thing at a time. Inconvenient and annoying.

people should always use a dock instead of a hub. It needs an external power supply in order to provide cooking the ports!
