Spending time in nature has so many benefits to psychological and physical health. In this fun, informative talk, Erica Wohldmann shares some lessons she learned while living in the forest that can be applied to life in the urban wild.
Dr. Erica Wohldmann is a scientist, a passionate environmentalist, and a lover of unfenced country. She earned a joint Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and cognitive science from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 2006, and is currently an Associate Professor at California State University, Northridge where she teaches classes about the psychology of food choices, best practices in sustainability, ecopsychology, and positive psychology. Erica’s research on factors that influence food choices has been generously funded by the National Institutes of Health, and her work has been published in some of the leading peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as featured in Psychology Today and on the National Wildlife Federation website. She has been invited to speak about her research, sustainable agriculture, and best practices at conferences, to the California Neighborhood and City Council Coalitions, as well as in her community and at popular music festivals.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Trying to control nature rather than live as part of nature is destroying everything. For a year and a half I traveled on my bicycle with bicycle powered blender. Most of my meals came out of the blender and a good part of what went in was plants spotted as I rode. I camped out at night. I've taken a break from my travels to make some money. My work is my joy. I speed through Portland on my bicycle 7 hours a day delivering food. Fortunately Portland has lots of trees which I commune with as I pass by. In a few months I may take off again for parts unknown. There is no lack of time. I'm 72 and I've never felt better.

Your comment makes me really happy, you have no idea. I'm from Brazil and I've traveled on my bike before but I'm planning a bigger trip, but I also want to finish University, but it will take 4 years and I'll be 41, and I my mind I'll be too old to travel. Your comment gave me hope. I hope I meet people like you on the way. :)

SO important to connect kids early to nature and stir their curiosity. Teach them to use a field guide to get the name of a species. Because with the name we can now easily learn its story...every plant or animal has one, and it intertwines with many that of many others. That is when the AHA starts to set in.

"I wonder how long we can keep just taking (from nature)" This is such an important talk- it will become more and more crucial as we move on ignoring the need of Mother Earth. Thank you so much, Erica!

Foraging is one of the biggest pressure on native plants, on which our local ecology depends. Humans are notorious for consuming to extinction. Local extinction results in totally extinct. Check out the IUCN statistics on this. PLEASE determine native vs non-native and eat the introduced plants, especially invasive ones, as they disrupt the ecology in many, many ways. These plants ARE problems created by humans. They divert pollinators from native plants, preventing reproduction, and have many more impacts.

Just stumbled upon this talk, must have come up in my feed due to all the Arthur Haines videos I'm watching! Erica, check his offerings out if you haven't already. I'm taking a (lunar) month long course with him this summer in Maine. Can't wait! His books are outstanding. Are or will you be writing any yourself? If so, please include an audible version for those of us with more time for chores than reading ;-)

So many of us (usually the palefaces) spend far too much time not giving our own culture credit or running our own culture down and putting other more simple (seemingly) cultures on a pedestal. We don't stop for a minute to reflect on all the good things our own ancestors and our own culture have given us. It has been said (in the Good Book) that a house divided against itself cannot stand. Taking a look around us at the desperate search for meaning and the latching on to all sorts of cultish diets and fanatical ways to live (from minimalist to who-knows-what next) makes that statement so poignantly true!

2:30 'I believe we can change the course of our future'.. This video : 15000 views 'Money, Money, Money' video, Abba : 67000000 views. 15000 is about 0,02% of 67000000. Believe what you want, Cinderella. We're screwed.
