The reaction to her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe has me utterly bewildered. Whatever choices the director and screenwriter may have made bringing Joyce Carol Oates’ Blonde to the screen, choosing her for the lead was not one of them. I thought she was absolutely brilliant: the best portrayal of Marilyn Monroe imaginable. Not only did she look eerily like her, in scenes like her Magda moment with Arthur Miller she was brilliant and heartbreaking. This was not just an impersonation. It was an embodiment, and it is a very great shame that the tumult over the depiction of her rape by Daryl Zanuck (which was not invented out of whole cloth) will prevent her portrayal from getting the recognition it deserves.
