Awesome jam, boss!!! The Rytm is my personal fav drum machine, I have an MK1 and I like the way Elektron update the firmware for both the MK1 and MK2. Elektron and maybe Novation, are very good at keeping their existing customers happy, it certainly garners brand loyalty. Having said that I'm not sure I would want to spend the extra at this point to get sampling (I use an OctaTrack for that, which I bought after my experience using the Rytm). I do feel that the black edition is possibly a swan song, and that something new and shiny is in the pipeline.

It’s nice to have a channel doing such a good content. I’m trying to figure out what is better for me. An Analog Rytm mkt 2 or the digitakt + the syntak. I need one or the other to create my own drum samples in the studio.. I work a lot with sound design and in the DAW I usually use synth and sample layers to make my own drum sounds. When I say digitakt + syntak it’s because I’m thinking about syncing the MIDI of the two devices and layering the synth (of syntak) with samples (of the digitakt). Example: in digitakt a clap sample and in the syntak a synth model clap. I’m trying to figure out which choice has more sound design power. In the Analog Rytm mkt 2 I can resample… but in the digitakt + syntak it looks like there is a bigger range of sounds for me to tweak and experiment with. What would be your suggestion? Thank you!

@stossbeats 3 года назад
I appreciate seeing you review this, though I think the Rytm is a tough instrument for you to cover in your typical format, mostly because of how deep it is. I’ve spent years with the Rytm and only recently decided to dedicate myself to mastering the analog drum circuits. They are extremely capable of reproducing many analog sounds, particularly when skillfully combined with the filter, overdrive and LFO for modulation. Given where I’m currently at I feel like you kind of glossed over this machines analog drum capabilities, which is a shame, because I actually think that is where it really shines. Its dual VCA synth capabilities are one of my least favorite aspects, yet they always seem highly attractive to new users.

So this is more than twice the price of an MPC One, has super limited RAM, very slow loading, a crap screen, mono sampling (??). Just looking at the device, disregarding everything I just said, I can see some appeal, pads probably nice, lots of buttons. But the One does all this and quite a lot more, has a drum synth and a regular synth ánd a bass synth etc. 2 GB RAM. It can load high quality fully sampled drum kits, grand piano's, etc. I really have a hard time understanding the consideration that leads to the purchase of the device specifically. Enlighten me though. I would like to have the dedicated sequencing buttons by the way. Scene/performance locks are cool too. Bit of a learning curve...

@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 3 года назад
Similar story here. I've had a Digitakt for years, but I find I almost never use most of its features. They're kind of neat to have, but typically aren't what I need. Most of what I want is to lay down a rhythm quickly, adjust the timbres to fit the song, and then record it and a few variations into my DAW. Elektron devices can certainly do those things, and a whole lot more... but I often get the feeling, while I'm scrolling through sounds or manually copying settings between patterns, that I could probably get the same things done faster and easier with a cheaper device. The extra features end up slowing me down. Like, I can't just sit down, create a new project, and start making beats. The workflow requires me to spend a bunch of time building a drum kit first, which is not what I want to be doing at the time. I can't just lay down some beats and then scroll through kits later to find one which fits. It doesn't even have a concept of kits. Then later, after making a bunch of patterns, if I want to adjust my kit... it has to be adjusted manually for each sound in each pattern. So I've been thinking about selling it and replacing it with a Drumbrute or something. I'd lose a bunch of features, but I mostly don't use those features anyway, and it would speed up my core workflow.

Love your videos! Any chance you would do the Access Virus TI2? It's an old synth, but you can still buy them new. It outperforms many new synths, but no one seems to talk about it anymore :(

i love the idea of having this machine. the sampling abilities are just enough to make it fun and interesting plus theres all the synth stuff it can do. however i keep thinking a new Octatrack will come out, or at least, Elektrons next new sampling powerhouse. just a feeling i got :P i do own the original OT so i'm not too fussed on the updated MK2. and i'm sure we all want an Octatrack like machine with full Overbridge support, that has to be the next step.

Loved my AR, but as usual, the raw audio from Elektron machines (AR, DT, OT) is quite lamentable.

@@danielpirone8028 Of the three Elektron boxes I have owned (those listed in my previous comment), then DT had the best audio fidelity, but the others pale in comparison as regards clarity when compared to, for example, an MPC One or other analogue synths I've had from various other manufacturers. FYI I'm referring to unfiltered sounds with the machines plugged directlly into the same audio interface on my PC recorded irectly in Audacity with no EQ or other alteration. That's why.

This is the first piece of gear that I've owned that has me totally stumped at times. Thanks for all the help with the sequencer functions. The manual for the machine is not very useful honestly when it comes to the little tricks of piecing together complex sequences. Your video is a huge help! Now I just have to watch it about 10 times...

Notice this inaccuracy at 1:00 trying to go back to 0 sounded fitting, I've read this many times in magazines by pros giving tips on mixing/producing how people are quick to correct these kind of mistakes when recording which can actually sound musical, it's something to think about. Great video btw.

Thank you for the video! Q: How is the latency when monitoring or recording into Ableton Live either thru USB Audio or Overbridge? I have a TR8s and with the latest Live 11 it has huge latency (+70ms). I am thinking of selling the TR8s and getting the ARmk2. I would assume Overbridge would remove that latency or at least minimize it significantly. Thanks!

Hmm, I always thought that the Digitakt does some things that the Rytm 2 can't but it seems like they're actually pretty similar/the same when it comes to sampling? Couple of q's for anyone who can answer -- are the individual outs pre-FX, pre compressor, pre master distortion? And I may have skipped this part of the vid, but the Rytm cannot really externally sequence in the way the Digitakt can, right?

I bought the MC 707 and used the TR8S a lot. My 2 cents: the TR8S is nice for live, but that’s all. And the MC707 while having a lot of good features and may have been an amazing flag ship, is in the end a failure (compared to AR4) : filters are sooo terrible, sound muddy as if you were mixing in a swamp; the 4 timbral synth (zen core engine) looked promising but ended up being a real pain to configure and the samples are totally outdated; the sampling is broken (eg: you can only load from your own project), etc. Most issues can be fixed with a firmware update, but sincerely, just considering the issue with the filters is enough to go for a machine with analog filters. Well, that’s my opinion 🙏
@jona_KardCiv1
@jona_KardCiv1 3 года назад
@@avetisk If it sounds muddy you just aren't doing enough high pass filtering.
@surf_machine

TR8s and 707 are imho a real alternative with even more possibilities or comparable to Rytm + A4 together (which are easily double the price but not double the features)

I like using the keys for previewing sounds over the pads, only because the pads always trigger the sound at a consistent velocity. Speaking of keys, I had read that some people were unhappy with the keys on the Rytm because they're not terribly tactile. Having one now, I'd say I love these keys. They aren't clicky, sure, but they are very satisfying.
