He gained through the Ford chicanes as well, throwing the car into drifts like a boss. It wasn't the cleanest of laps, there were a couple of moments where he lost time. Both the 1st and 2nd sectors weren't purple (in both he was more than a 0.1s off) yet he made so much time up in the last sector! What a legend!
Kevin is proved several times that he's a proper animal behind the wheel, especially in the wet. His performance at the N24s earlier and this lap just further justifies why he's being put behind the wheel anytime there's 4 drops of water on the track. 5 laps old tires, damp track, with the clock running out... What a mad lad
@@syntheovaldy5173 swear to god! thought that lap was skectly af even by his standards then he goes on to the mic and says "the last lap the car really came alive, just how I like it". I couldn't help but burst into laugh lol
@@peterrrr I think that when it looks like the driver is all over the place with the wheel, it usually means the driver is on its limit :D just disappointed about the race tho. Those ferraris were mad quick 😭 Porsche still needs to catch up
This hyperpole qualifying session has to be the BEST session I’ve ever seen. Bourdais with an insane lap at the start. Then Lynn with an insane last lap and then Estre with an absolutely insane last second lap! This race is not going to be easy for anyone
I was just rewatching this incredible lap and thinking: “I’m shure that grooved slicks will make a video about that“ and suddenly your video has appeared, thank you man, you made me love this driver!
Same, estre at the ring and then not only i have discovered a great channel but also one of the best drivers i've ever seen in motorsport. @@adrianvander8663
The outrageous braking force that some of these modern marvels have is ALWAYS insane to me. Watching these and formula 1 cars literally brake from 300+kmh when they are only 100meters before curves is never not wild.
@@ldplays9431 Not only the confidence, but the FITNESS! I know they have safety devices that help with your head and stuff, but man still there is a reason drivers have treek trunks for necks LMFAO
Grooved Slick is doing more than just analysis videos - he is helping to make legends out of these awesome drivers. He is helping us to understand this sport and its drivers at a deeper level and how much hard work and talent goes into race results. Great work 🏁
This lap it is incredible mainly the 4 moments where it seemed that estre lost everything: the dunlop chicane, the second chicane, indianapolis and the ford chicane. And it also shows us that to be ahead in qualifying with the current level of drivers, you have to take full risks without going over the limit because if that happens you will be out and it can be a mistake that can be very costly as it happened to Kobayashi.
When I saw the lap live it was so interesting to me how he used to the oversteer to help rotate the car. I remember listen to the podcast he did with laurens and he was speaking about how he induces oversteer which was his driving style. seriously one of the best laps I've ever seen like laurens pole at the nbr in 2018
It's the same tehnique that verstappen uses. Oversteer. Look at how much neutral steer there is in the first corner. Probably a proper setup plus a good brake bias setting and surely an alien of a driver man handling it.
That overtake and entry into Indianapolis was only inches away from disaster. Could've easily ended up in the wall, like the BMW or even worse. Estre is a beast when it comes to driving on the limit.
Your storytelling ability is incredible. I think even a blank screen with this same commentary would be worth watching! I love your passion for the sport. Thanks for the great content
This was an insane qualifying session, would have watched a video analyzing the whole thing. Amazing how much he thrashes the car in the chicane, and the speed in the Porsche curves was unbelievable
Greetings from Colorado again, brother! Whoa. What can one say about Kevin. I've been watching him for a decade. Misha Charoudin Robert Michell at Nuremburgring, through their relationship to Manthey Racing and THEIR racing program, introduced Kevin and his young family to their followers. Having watched the Manthey GT2 in Kevin's hands at the 24 Hours of Nuremburg, we've ALL watched in awe at Kevin's wild and oh-so-very-fast and manic style. His now famous 'Pass-On-The-Grass' (plus his wins) have brought him to his current and fantasticly deserved place with at the pinnacle of endurance racing with (wow!) a factory/Penske seat! Your great editing and production work should bring much more deserved success. THANK you!
i watched the live onboard and the official stream. In the official stream nobody even talked about him or Porsche until the last few corners. Watching the time on the dash dropping and dropping was so intense to the point where you realise this lap is definetley is on for pole. Loved it!
Damn you were quick on this! Love the attention to details, I was watching the broadcast and when they cut away right before Indy I had to pull up the onboard to see what happened. Couldn't believe my eyes that he pulled that pass off. My only silly little nitpick is I wish you included the other LMP2 he passed just before starting this lap because he got so close it was crazy.
You can see that he's on the absolute limit. Look at the corrections in sector 3. Look at the rotation in the slow speed chicanes. So in other words he drove the wheels off that car. Also the setup looks rotation oriented. And the brake bias seems to be set a lot backwards.
Hey mate, awesome stuff and crazy skills by Kevin! Can you tell me where i can find this onboard and are there copyright problems with that? Thank you!
Thanks! They are streaming them on the FIA WEC TV website and youtube. They usually de-monetize any video with their footage in it but I know some people have gotten copyright strikes in the past
“Ah, not possible without the draft of the Oreca” “best conditions on track as the last driver” Let me make one thing clear: yes the Porsche was the best car in all tests before Le Mans. Were they able to carry it over to the actual thing? Not really. Kevin showed a lot of the times why he is one of the greatest sports car drivers and gt drivers in history. You need a lot to do a pass on the grass with over 250 on the green hell, several times! Kevin has all of it and more. In this situation with pressure he had it was world class, if not to say a Max Verstappen Masterclass. He even almost missed hyperpole, it went so bad in hyperpole with traffic, mistakes and not that muvh performance in the Porsche everyone thought it should have but what he did with all that circumstances, almost loosing it four times, doing the last sector in tokyo drift style, holy cow I have no words for it. With all that pressure to deliver and safe the so far not easy weekend, with a track getting colder and colder, he even had a fuel warning two or three times on the lap. One last sentence to finish this roman: EstieBestie is a damn legend and did what EstieBestie does best!
He switched from single seaters to sportscars early in his career and people rarely ever get back into single seaters after that switch. Probably also has something to do with money, as always with motorsports.
He’s been a GT driver for most of his career . Only drove in single seaters for 1 season (which he won) and then went to carrera cup. Got a McLaren GT drive and Lmp2 drive for Le mans before being signed by Porsche the next year. The rest is history. He only made the switch from GT’s to protos (in wec) last year after the death of GTE pro.
Some people just prefer other stuff. I don't know Kevin's opinions but I imagine the multi class and endurance races are part of the appeal. I'm sure someone's interviewed him and asked.
I don't think so. I believe the team elected not to run him because they were confident with his lap and didn't want to risk a crash. They could have put more fuel in during the red flag
@@GroovedSlick From what I read on some random comment, they where not alowed to refuel, parc-ferme rule I think, but don't know if you'r allowed during red flag, or maybe they just didn't try.
@@alexd5240 It was a last moment change of pole from a seemingly offpace car (finding a whole second is insane) that was decided in the last sector on worse track conditions.
Ferrari has more good drivers than Porsche! Ferrari has good drivers with Antonio Fuoco, Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado, Nicklas Nielsen, Miguel Molina, Antonio Giovinazzi, Robert Kubica, Robert Shwartzmann, Ye Yifei
