It really feels like this whole show started with Captain Bass. She's the only one who gets this kind of Life Story solo, most of the focal characters are from her flight, I wonder at what point in their research they realized that the show was transforming into more of an ensemble story.

This song gives me chills every time. The first time I saw come from away was on broadway with most of the original cast. I had never listened to the music before, just had a vague idea of what it was about. Was floored the entire time, this song was definitely one of the most memorable to me❤

I love this analysis! I’ve also always thought of the build up to the chorus as a plane taking off, and describing the chord on the word “bomb” as a gut-punch was EXACTLY my experience hearing it live for the first time in Ottawa.

When I was a kid I thought Eponine just forgot to sing the final “grow” in ‘A Little Fall of Rain’ and was gut-punched at the reality of the musical. There’s just something so incredibly visceral about leaving a song unfinished.

Mateo, not only are you extremely talented, but your analysis is brilliant! You make the material so fun and accessible! I’m glad I found your channel. Keep up the great work!

Great point about the last word. I saw it live and remember thinking that they cheated me out of my resolution, then immediately (because of the way everything in that show was done so thoughtfully) considered that maybe, just maybe, the unresolved feeling is the whole damn point.

I need a music analysis on every role I play seriously it changes everything. It’s why I’m minoring in music with my musical theatre major!! Great video, thank you!

Great analysis! I absolutely agree, the context makes the difference. I love hearing the complete song on the cast album. But it's a gut punch and great push off to the next scene to leave the song incomplete in the play.

you have a really good singing voice, by the way! If you made covers I’d certainly listen to them. Even though I’ve never heard this song before I think I’d prefer the trail-off as well… the way you described it was absolutely haunting, woah.

wonderful analysis ... saw it 2x and never realized the last word "sky" wasn't sung in the performance.

Wonderful analysis. You can play and analyze the chord structure and and sing so well And most importantly , provide insight on why the song is so effective.

I need to point out the significance of the change when she says “somehow I’m 51.” She uses the word somehow instead of suddenly like the rest of the song. The word “somehow” serves comedic effect, but it also serves as a break between the rest of the song and the upcoming verse about 9/11 (which goes back to using suddenly). The slight change makes all the difference. It keeps the flow, but signifies to the listener that the next verse is important. Also, the part about not getting a break is reenforced by the show not having an intermission.

Wow, that was a great analysis. I would agree with you on the breaking off on the stage production by not finishing the "Sky" and keeping it on the audio version. I love the play and appreciate the full version when listening to the play and found it more powerful when I saw it live to not have the end of her sentence.

Fantastic video! Recently, I was bawling my eyes out in my car listening to this song (but in a good way!) I was hoping I could find someone way smarter than me to explain what it was about the music that made me feel so much. I had some theories, but I am barely even an amateur music theory fan lol. After a quick search I found your video and it does not disappoint! You hit everything I was wondering and explained it so well. This was such a joy to watch and listen to. You are very talented, thank you for sharing!

You also forgot to mention that in the stage production, the audience does not even get an intermission. It was decided to not have one because those were living in that time and going through those emotions and actions did not get an intermission….

Thank you so much for a brilliant and very instructive video! I've only seen two Broadway shows so far. Dear Evan Hansen and Come from away. Loved both! ❤
