Analyzing The Diamond Designs || Steven Universe 

The diamond designs always reminded me of specific things, objects to be exact: - White is a star. - Yellow is a sword. - Blue is a teardrop. - And Pink is a flower.

I love that Pink Diamond is the one leading figure that was stripped of authority at every turn so the decision to end her existence as a jesting princess, reflected in her design, was deliberately genius.Aaaand her struggle to actually understand the organic life she felt some level of compassion to is the PINK in her hue.

The placement of the Gems also symbolises their status. White as the head of the Diamonds have her diamond, well on her head. Blue and Yellow are lower than White, but equal to each other hence both have it on their chest. Pink has the lowest status thus her gem placement is located lowest, on her stomach We can also see that White and Pink's diamonds ar opposite, White's pointing down and Pink's pointing up, perhaps symbolizing perspective, Pink looking up to her fellow Diamonds and aspiring to be like them, while White looks down on all others as imperfect

I thought white diamond shoes meant that she puts herself on a pedestal

I just love the use of shapes in their design! Blue and Pink having the most rounded out of all the diamonds signifies their friendliness. Yellow having a more rounded diamond shape/square shape signifies her authority (being the diamond with the most planets conquered only 2nd to white). And finally White, Her shape triangle body signifies danger and harm which is true when we actually we her menacing figure when she welcomes Steven.

Their gem placement also resembles their rank, pink at the bottom, yellow and blue at the middle, and white at the highest

The Diamonds remind me of symbols of monarchy: White is the crown, Yellow is the scepter, Blue is the orb, and Pink... doesn't really fit in with the imagery, which is allegorical for her defection. She's a misfit

Ever since Yellow Diamond was first introduced, I thought her design was partly inspired by the Gibson Girls from Charles Dana Gibson's illustrations due to their long necks, how their hairstyles kind of looked similar to Yellow's hair helmet, and how they were viewed as the pinnacles of perfection at the time

Similarly to what you said about Yellow and Blue having contrasting shape language (sharp vs. round), so do White and Pink

something I noticed (or maybe you talked about it in another video and I'm braindead) is that the diamonds also follow Sigmund Freud "Id, Ego, SuperEgo" complex. Pink is the ID, given her Impulsive nature and her weakness against her Desires. Blue and Yellow are the Ego, mediating pink and controlling her to be serious and act proper. and White is the SuperEgo mediating Blue and Yellow and believing she is completely perfect and absolute over all gems.

White also has three small diamonds on her lips which could be because she sees the other three diamonds as being part of her

I just realized the new powers of the diamonds like: White's power is mind control but the future the new power is someome can control her mind. Yellow's power is can destroy gems but in future is to help gems. Blue's power is to make gems cry but in future is to make people happy. Pink/steven/Rose is to heal/protect but in future is to destroy.

Another cool detail of white's design is the 1920's-esque vibe she gives off with her makeup, dress, and color palette which can symbolize her grandmotherly nature towards Pink and old-fashioned ways, and lines up with Rebecca Sugar's original inspiration for White.

I like blue diamond a lot. Being that she is charged with maintaining Homeworld’s culture, she has a lot of aristocratic gems in her court. I like how her design is heavily inspired off of Catholicism, being that of like a nun, bishop, or pope. It’s similar to medieval Europe where the church had an iron clasp on religion, culture, and government and many top religious figures had a lot of systematic powers similar to that of the aristocratic gems in her court.

I find it interesting you didn’t mention the fact tht Pink by virtue & especially in relation to White is “off color” which I think is v noteworthy. It amplifies the inherent conflict you did mention fasho tho.

I would day the naval gem placement also indicates the gem has a strong sense of intuition and will go with their gut when making decisions. They may also not be taken as serious due to their femenine and often passive personas. They all seem to be underdogs in that way.

In reference to pink diamonds hair I’m surprised you didn’t mention the hibiscus connection. While Rose Quartz is associated with roses, pink diamond was always associated with hibiscus flowers 🌺, reflected in the shape of her hair

Idk if youve read the Art Books, but End of an Era goes deep into the thought process behind their designs. White especially was intentionally designed based on a 1950s cartoon sponsored by Kotex (you can guess what the subject matter was), based on the narrator's reflection of antique social attitudes that women must exude an attitude of mental strength, total emotional control, being perfectly manicured and cultivated at all times. Other commenters have mentioned the Freudian hierarchy of their personalities, which was confirmed in the book as well. Their coloration was specifically chosen to reflect CYMK subtractive color, which Change Your Mind (CYM, get it? Hehe) describes as mineral flaws that subtract color qualities from White's "purity" (which can also be seen as her emptiness and a sort of absent identity) CYM itself was further designed so that White's expressiveness and detail was at a standard far above any other animated gem in the show, giving her a beyond-alien quality intended to reflect her frightening and powerful nature. You can contrast with how her posessed avatar Pink Pearl has the simplest facial design and animations, reflective of a standard gem.

I wish you added that white was a representation of a narcissistic abuser. Her toeless heels, dress, lashes, eye shadow, acrylic nails, microbladed eyebrows look like things women wear; many narcissistic women base their self-worth off their looks and I don't think many women would wear a cape regularly but a poncho would be a similar fashion choice that they'd pick. Also I thought that white diamond's hair was supposed to look like a crown rather than a star to represent her narcissism and, as I've just thought, her hierarchy in the gemworld.

The designs weren't inconsistent. It was a deliberate choice of the Creator to have different artists come in and do each character so everyone could feel included and contribute to the show. That's why some characters look different in certain episodes. This was deliberate.
