This stuff goes deep. Most meme lives start out innocent but the fascist media culture is so prevalent and skews art and cultural content to push public humiliation. Now that people are fighting back and using media to showcase these injustices is so important. Trouble is it hits so close to home because our culture is so zombified and uncaring for the people of their country.

You gotta understand. The online world is global. Every popular word or idea gets overused beyond it's meaning. Everything is racist or sexist or ___phobic. Everyone is a simp, cuck, incel, boomer, Karen, thot, soyboy, etc. And for non memes, everyone throws around the labels Nazi, white supremacist, nationalist, etc. Even the idea of trying to play victim, Karen's compared themselves to the n-word. Like boomers called it ageist. Really, it's just a fast dismissive way to win arguments or lazily attack.

In Thailand, the equivalent of Karen is "มนุษย์ป้า" or literally "auntiewoman," mocking Superwoman or other superheroines. These auntiewomen or unclemen (male equivalent) behave similarly to the original Karen, except being white as obviously most Thais are not white. Their senses of entitlement in this case emerge from "being elderly" or "being hierachically higher" due to our cultures of respecting the elders or people with higher social ranks.

I was a hairdresser for many years. Karen's hair looks like for a reason. She started out with a classy, elegant a-line bob & it looked beautiful, but she kept driving her hairdresser bonkers asking for it to be more & more stacked in the back until her hairdresser had to cut it so short that they finally suggested using clippers; at which point Karen emphatically objected by declaring that was "way too short" (lol). Karen "still wanted the length in the front, but she wanted it blended", so now it looks heavy in the front like 2 different haircuts. Also, Karen doesn't want to use product, or style her hair with a blow-dryer, so she managed to create this haircut that really could stand to be called 'The Karen', which works out okay because she also dictated to her stylist that she "didn't want a bob"... after she spent the entire consultation describing a bob. The chunky blond highlights were actually the easy part UNLESS the subject of bleach was broached, because Karen wants her hair as blond as possible, but she "doesn't want bleach". May the Lord bless and keep Karen... far away from me ;)

Been there, done that. =) Funny thing is, the one time I didn't so that, it got kinda messy with the server. My friends and I were out at a pub on a busy night when my food order got mixed up. I was about to go with it when my friends insisted I get it changed. They were all "That's not what you wanted. You shouldn't have to eat it" and got me to flag down the server to get my order fixed. Turned out the server was a 'Karen' (or at least maybe she was having a bad enough day that she was acting like a 'Karen'-- it was a busy night at the pub after all) and started arguing with me that *I* was wrong and the food she gave me was exactly what I ordered with this angry, indignant look on her face. Thankfully my friends were there to stand up for me and basically act as witnesses, so she backed down and got my proper order. Would've never happened without them. Thinking back, I still find her indignant anger really weird and off-putting. I mean, I wasn't being a 'Karen' myself (as far as I know). I think I only said one sentence before she started snapping back at me. If my friends hadn't been there I would have definitely backed down myself and just taken the food I had ended up with. Sometimes I wonder if the server actually did eventually realize she misheard me when I ordered (as I said the pub was busy that night so it was understandable), or if in true 'Karen' form, she was doing the mental gymnastics to convince herself *she* was right, probably rationalizing that all my friends were all just lying about what they had heard me order to get it changed, and had only backed down 'cuz my friends spoke up too and a 4v1 argument that would have ended up involving the manager would have ended badly for her.

When you said that the Karen archetype "weaponizes her privilege", I think you hit the nail on the head. A white woman has privilege in the US, and can't help that. I agree that the term "Karen" has somewhat lost its meaning and, in some contexts, has come to be used to describe pretty much any woman a person doesn't like. "Karen" is supposed to refer to a specific kind of rude, entitled white woman, but now I'm seeing it used to refer to women expressing legitimate concerns or just doing their jobs, which really doesn't sit well with me.

Agreed. I remember there was an incident on twitter regarding the she ra voice actress where she saw a joke about her on the guillotine and she, understandably thought it was a death threat and called it out. To be fair she could’ve handled it better but everyone was calling her a Karen for this. Edit: for context, the op was a minor however it was unclear. And it was meant as a joke and to say they loved her but I still understand why she was worried.

I feel exactly the same way... I think in some ways it has become a way to silence women who do speak up about things and in these situations, it often has a misogynistic undertone. This is so frustrating because I think it undermines the way the word was originally used. In most situations, I think that tiffany's right, that using the word is punching up, but there are definitely some situations where it is not. It seems like it has nestled into the vocab on the right to be a woman who you don't like or a woman with strong opinions, and I feel like that takes away from the meaning the word originally had.

yeah, and this is where it becomes mysogynistic, it just disregards that woman's opinion. Why would you bother thinking about what she has to say if you can just call her a karen and be done with it? Oh, you just don't wanna hear about what she has to say because you don't like it? that's mysogyny, folks! When the Karen meme appeared, I was sure it was only a matter of time before it turned into another "name for women we don't like" and wow, that never happened before but once again I was right. It's the same with slut, whore or bitch. I mean, it's always mysogynistic to call a woman any of those names, but nowadays you can be a slut or a bitch for simply saying no to whatever someone wants you to do. Don't want to leave your number? Slut. Complained to your boss about someone not doing their job, which impacted your own workload? Bitch. Same thing.

Just today I heard a middle aged Mexican woman openly speaking about her own fear of “morenitos” meaning black people and how she didn’t trust them, and how they are scary and blah blah I stopped listening. The point is I’ve grown up listening to similar remarks my whole life and I’m so sick of it because it can be just a meme but it definitely shows a more deep rooted racism not only within white people but also among other poc against black people and it needs to be talked about more imo.

Mexican Karens (I STAND BY MY POINT THAT MEXICAN KARENS ARE "CÑORAS", FITE ME) use it in a disrespectful manner. ...It's disrespectful anyway in the case of "morenitos", but there's also tone deaf Karens that think brown people are cute and go "aww, un morenito". I recently read a post in which someone said they did think there was some sexism to the use of the Karen meme, not in the sense that these women with this repulsive behaviour don't exist, but in the sense that it created a feeling that this is the worst type of customer that a worker can encounter. Several people with experience in service jobs replied saying they agreed and that as annoying as women like this are, the internet focused on them, and not on men, who in their experience were the ones who had actually scared them, threatened them with violence, sexually harassed workers, etc. personally, while bartending I've had a middle aged woman ask me to make a very uncommon drink that we didn't have the ingredients for, and after I told her, she insisted and behaved like I was being stupid and like her day was ruined. Which was very annoying. However, men have, well, harassed me. On the other hand, i get the Karen meme is a very USA culture thing and I'm not from the US so my opinion might not be relevant. TLDR: there is some sexism to calling out privileged women for being assholes if one doesn't dedicate the same effort to calling out privileged men who are just as much or even bigger assholes.

That's because managers are usually Karen's themselves, they hate younger employees out of jealously so enjoy when customers attack them. I genuinely started my own business so that I would NEVER have to deal with a Karen manager again. I dont have employees because I dont need them but I also dont want to be someone's boss. But if I did have employees I'd treat them well, like people, not livestock. One time I agreed with someone who posted that people with disabilities may need or use baby wipes too, & that the term “baby” on a wipe doesn’t mean it is solely for children. He said his mom was a nurse who worked in a retirement home and they used them. I agreed that they are for everyone and agreed that people shouldn’t hoard toilet products. He then yelled at me for thinking moms rule everything and called me a Karen. I was extremely confused, because he yelled at me for words I never said. It was kind of funny. What is the name for men who mansplain and then tell you your opinions for you and then shame you for those options they assigned to you.

Ever since chuds on 4chan and Incels (I know, lots of crossover) started using it I see it in literally any context where a man defends or sides with a woman for any reason. It's so irritating to see what started as an anti-sexist term (calling out losers who give women special treatment for their ulterior motives) being used as a sexist term (anyone who thinks women deserve anything ever).

Erm....the reason they say that is because you use someone's race as part of the attack. The black community invented the term to describe WHITE women. The other word was used by the white community to describe black people. Both are wrong. I've met "karens" of all generations, races and backgrounds. Until I saw this video I had no idea that it was invented to describe white women who embodied those characteristics. I've met far more Asian women who act this way than white. You think that being white means you can't get harassed by the police??? You know who gets harassed by the police more than anyone? People with mental health issues. Doesn't matter what colour their skin is, most cops are sadists and I've seen them try to wind people up who clearly have such health issues and when they react use that as a reason for arrest and then use "reasonable force" on them. The police are awful towards lots of people...a lot join the police force cause they can physically hurt people and not be subject to criminal investigation and prosecution. In the UK, someone can be injured in custody and as long as it hasn't resulted in death or a very serious impairment then it's investigated internally, I. E. The senior of the officer gets to deal with it. Any evidence is not available to the victim, and it often gets written off as reasonable force based on evidence only they get to see. If they were investigated for criminal assault then they wouldn't be doing this to people! I work for a mental health charity and have heard plenty of stories of this happening. There were no higher instances of such treatment occurring against people of colour, and I live in London.

@greenpenguin7877 4 года назад
@@dvb5670 I'm not saying that it doesn't happen...of course it does. But, in this day and age and where I live, you're actually seeing the opposite happening. If the police want to randomly arrest someone to meet their target for arrests, they are more likely to go for a white male because they won't get accused (quite rightly in many cases) of being racist for doing so. The more arrests they have the more productive they appear. The point is that if you're white you can still be targeted by the police for no reason and as a white person you have no comeback for it at all. The worry of being accused of racism has resulted in a lot of high profile cases actually being ignored by the police and there's plenty of research to back this up. And the comment I was responding to originally said "do you get shot at by the police"...Obviously I cannot comment in the context of the US as I do not live there. But in the context of British police brutality...it's wrong to suggest that white people don't get targeted. If you want to speak about police brutality, acknowledge that it does happen to everyone and being white gives us no protection. A shitty sadistic police officer won't care about someone's race, age or gender. And if you're saying it's ok to be targeted by the police due to a disability and that this isn't worse than skin colour....no, it's not worse or better it's still a misuse of power. But the majority of the population whatever their skin colour still think it's ok to have someone arrested due to their mental health. A few weeks back there was a woman wailing in the street where I live, her husband had passed away from the virus and she couldn't be with him. She was having a break down in the middle of the street. A woman called the police on her and said she was disturbing her and her children. The woman having the breakdown was arrested for breach of the peace (a civil offence but still). And guess what...the woman who was arrested was white, probably early 40s. The woman who called the police on her was a young black woman likely in her mid to late 20s. Is that not a "Karen" ? The woman's skin colour has bugger all to do with this, she would have done that if it had been someone of colour also. She was just not a nice person. I've seen her "clapping for carers" at 8pm every Thursday yet she insisted that the police arrest this poor bereaved woman. She was filming it and threatening to post it online and make a complaint if they didn't arrest the woman. There are good people of all races and bad people of all races, and that's the bottom line. And even if there are stats for the present day showing that more people of colour are randomly targeted, that doesn't demean the fact that white people are also targeted. We should be standing up for each other as human beings against corruption like that, not dependent on someone's skin colour.

I can't change my name now and I don't want to be bullied into changing my name. I think it's good that these awful people are being called out and all I can do is not act like the Karen we see in those memes. If your name is Karen and you're thinking, "I'm not like that! They're bullying me", don't BITE THE BAIT. Keep cool. This isn't about you!! The meme is about people who are really terrible and if we throw a huge fuss about it, we'll get lumped into that category. A couple of years later, maybe people will shit on "Taylor" or "Shayla" instead. it's so annoying and dumb that an entire group of people will be the butt of the joke because the internet happens to use their name in a meme. I do think it's unfortunate that this "Karen" meme originated with someone's name. Wish they'd have chosen a more neutral route instead. In Malaysia, Karens are called Mak Cik Bawang (aka Onion Ladies) and that at least doesn't target anyone's names specifically.

I def agree. This might be a volatile subject but I feel like lately I’ve been seeing more and more ppl using racism as an excuse not to change their behavior, like if you say anything about their nasty actions you’re automatically racist and your opinion means nothing. To each their own of course but at some point it becomes detrimental to ourselves and others to ignore constructive criticism about our behavior. Same thing with some overweight ppl or feminazis, they’re convinced ppl could only not like them strictly bc of their appearance when in reality it’s their incredibly sucky personality that pushes most ppl away. Like it has nothing to do with appearance, I just don’t like you or think you’re a nice/good person??? It’s crazy how people can’t wrap their head around that. If someone doesn’t like my personality it hurts quite a bit bc I’m a ppl pleaser at heart and kinda really want to be liked by everyone but I also know there’ll always be ppl that won’t like me no matter what and I have to let them have their own feelings & perspective. Maybe I’m the only one experiencing this but I feel like I’d like to hear more ppl talk about it:)

When I told her that she was in the handicap spot, hoping that it was an accident, the first thing she said was “Oh, I’m just gonna be in and out.” Yes, I do understand that there are invisible disabilities, but the way she acted did not indicate that and she did move her car out of the handicap spot shortly after I confronted her (which she did very hastily and nearly rear ending the car behind her). When I posted the story on Reddit, instead of being praised for standing up for the disabled, I was called a Karen for confronting someone committing an illegal act with only a few people siding with me. I’m autistic and I have never encountered a wild Karen before, so how was I supposed to know how to properly interact with one? I only wanted to do the right thing, and yet I was told by both my mother and random people on the internet that I should just mind my own business.

He admits he was one of those people who believed that “America is the best country”, mainly because of his education and I found that really interesting.

@An ais As a European I also saw lots of people absolutely idealizing the US bc of 'the freedom' over there which you can't find in most developed European countries. If you try to talk to these people about problems in the US they will be like "That's typical for Europeans. Always thinking you know all the answers, looking down on non-European nations, such an arrogant point of view." I see where this perspective is coming from and admit that I've noticed these things here, too. But now I feel like I am not allowed to criticise anything in the US anymore since I'm not "allowed to", because it isn't "my country"/all my arguments are invalid because I'm stuck in my European mindset, not willing to emphasize with the American perspective... But I find it hard to see where I cross the line between being critical and shutting my mind. Wouldn't it also be terrible of me to think Americans wouldn't be able to come to the same conclusions as I did after I've done lots of research (and vice versa ofc)? I mean, if someone thinks the US is sooo great and you tell them "The exploitation of illegal immigrants for underpaid jobs is a huge problem in the US" or that I think the health system is problematic, should I really just sugarcoat these (in my opinion) very serious issues to "Americanize myself"? Wouldn't that mean, that I as a European think something like: American mindset = ignorance, being superficial, self-reflection of 0. That would be far worse, wouldn't it? It's a complicated topic for me as you might be able to tell... :D

Star cherry, I believe that you do not understand. Karen is used as a broad term, not just towards white women. Black women can be Karens as well. However, Shaniqua is used specifixally towards Black women, which is what makes it racist. I'm sorry if there are any spelling mistakes here, as I'm using my kindle to write this, as it's hard to type on it.
@starcherry6814
@starcherry6814 3 года назад
@@castalia120 No I DO understand. "Shaniqua" was a very common Black name at the time. Along with "Shawanda." My point is nobody defended Black girls and women at the time, and these stereotypes were harmful for an entire generation of Black people. Nobody wants to name their kid that anymore because everyone thinks it's rachet/ghetto, and people that have that name STILL struggle to get jobs and be taken seriously. Now that White women are facing a similar taste of their own medicine with the name, "Karen" a common stereotypical name for a White woman. More people calling it problematic. Any time someone calls you a Karen you're being associated with a stereotypical entitled White woman. Just like how anybody named Shawanda was associated with being a stereotypical rude low class Black woman. Stereotypes are dumb we ALL know anybody with any type of name coming from any background, can be rude, entitled and low class. But our society is less willing to call out harmful stereotypes towards Black women than they are White women. Names like Shaniqua and Shawanda were used on comedy shows for YEARS for laughs, and faced not one minute of backlash. The name Karen is getting news coverage and video essays titled "is it problematic?"

it's not, a Karen CAN be a racist and often is, but does not have to be. Like in that video there where she calls the cops, what you don't see is that the black guy was also being a Karen before he started filming. Threatening her dog because he was not on a leash while he was birdwatching, He even bragged about it on his facebook.
@lari13s
@lari13s 4 года назад
@@h0ll0w0ne I agree with what you first said about the woman but I disagree with your analysis on the black man. He definitely was not threatening the dog. Yes, he admitted to trying to give the dog some treats to get him/her away from the bushes, but I wouldn't (and I don't think most people would) consider that as a threat to the dog. Secondly, I think he started filming when he realized that the situation was getting out of hand and he needed to protect himself. If he hadn't started recording I'm certain many people would have believed the woman, especially with the dramatic and insincere 911 call she made.
@user-sl7nq3cl3g
@user-sl7nq3cl3g 4 года назад
@@lari13s On his post he admitted that when the woman refused to put the dog on a leash he told her "If you're going to do what you want, I'm gonna do what I want and you won't like it." (To a woman alone in a park btw) He then got some food out to lure the dog towards him (note that she had no way of knowing what exactly he had in his hands and had just told her she wouldn't like it) and continued when she told him not to touch her dog. It wouldn't be unimaginable that after saying this, the woman would start to think he wanted to take her dog or do something to it. Then she freaked out and grabbed the dog away from him (hence the unintentional choking) and he began filming her, escalating the situation even more.
