Thanks Rick for the insider view! I tried to practice as you said, but found it is very difficult to get the rhythm. Can you teach us how to practice and get this legs drive initiate the racquet in/drop? Greatly appreciated!

Roscoe Tanner was 6 ft and with the wooden raket served at 153 mph in the '70s ; it is not true he hit the ball on the way up but at the peak , the one hitting on the way up was Kevin Curren .

Being 6’ 4 doesn’t hurt. If he were 5’ 10 we wouldn’t even know who he was.

Patrick said in his video he hits the ball on the way up, Macci is saying he hits it at its peak…. Patrick seems very limited at the technical aspects.

Patrick said 'almost on the way up', not sure what he meant by that, maybe he implied it was near the peak. Kyrgios definitely does not contact the ball whilst the ball is going up in his serve, so Rick is definitely correct here. But the difference is milli-seconds. If more than anything from the slow motion video I've seen Kyrgios' contact on the serve is slightly after the peak, the ball drops a tiny bit.

Actually Mouratoglou is one of the best at the technical aspects…and Macci is great, too. The point of this video is that leg drive initiates the swing. When you hit the ball doesn’t matter so long as it suits your motion and was just an offhand comment by both coaches. The fact is that hitting after the ball drops a couple inches is easier for most people to time.

Macci’s advice is always gospel even if it takes a while to get it

Sorry, Rick. Love your work and you’re a god amongst tennis instructors. However, have to disagree that Kyrgios contacts the ball at the toss apex on serve. Slow-mo evidence is that Kyrgios (also Tanner and Curren) makes contact with the ball on its way down in the toss. Yes, they all hit the ball earlier in the drop than anyone else, but it’s still on the way down. Agree with everything else you’re saying especially that the leg drive initiates the racquet drop (pre-stretch lag) so important for racquet head speed.

Just saw a video from Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena’s Couch, and he just said what Maci is saying here. Patrick says that Nick hits the ball immediately. He doesn’t wait for the ball to drop.

@@NancyGonzalez-kv5mm No need to take anyone’s word for it, see with your own eyes ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z_LU2q1CROA.html at around 2:30 onwards in the slow motion high res video. PM even claims Kyrgios hits the ball on its way up in the toss on that video you’re referencing (same video that Macci is slyly slating a bit in this video! 😆)

@@jerome_morrow That’s not the one I was looking at but your are correct. It’s not exactly when it hits the top but right when it starts to go down.

Thanks Rick! To go along with this, it's as if the arm/racquet are completely passive at the moment of the leg drive. Like you like to say, the legs/hips are the car and the racquet/arm are the passengers.

he has the best serve technique in modern tennis, possibly best of all time, if a taller player emulated it to generate even more speed it wouldn't even be playable.

I disagree he is slapping the ball with tremendous velocity his arm hand and wrist are so free he is swinging at 100mph his wind up is at a blinding speed. Nobody on tour serves like him
