Thanks for the encouragement-yes, the Helios was already a favorite and now it is a bit wider in focal length with the anamorphic adapter! Yikes on the packaging. 😬 But happy for the adapter!!

I'm actually thinking about this simply because of the fact that I could keep the wildly accurate AF from the R6 Mark II and STILL get the anamorphic look (which is crazy to think about). Would love to know what it looks like attached to a native RF lens.
@JosephMcBrayer
@JosephMcBrayer Год назад
Hey there Francis-thanks for the comment here-the anamorphic adapter is all manual focus, so the canon r6 autofocus has to be disabled. The taking lens (the ef/rf glass) has to be set to infinity focus (hence why older lenses or lenses with distance markings are preferable to have with the adapter going on the end of the lens. There *is* a work around using a gimbal like the rs2 (or 3) with the LiDAR focus pulling system (3D focus with raven eye) to calibrate the anamorphic lens to be ‘auto focused’ using the rs2 3D focus. It does work surprising well. So, in short, the autofocus is not used with the anamorphic adapter. I hope that’s a helpful explanation. All the best to you.

A7siii + átomos ninja V - test please! 😅
@JosephMcBrayer
@JosephMcBrayer Год назад
Well, I’d like that but I don’t have an A7siii-sadly I’m only a canon & blackmagic camera user. There are some tests I’ve seen out there of folks using Sony A7sx’s with the atomos ninja. Sorry I can’t come through on this request.

Hi Joseph! great video! Would love to hear more in the future of your pratical impressions using the lens more like: do you think it needs a follow focus ? Do you think it can be balanced on Gimbal? Does it flares more because of the adapter? Do you think it would be necessary a mattebox? Maybe a sharpness test comparing the lens with and without the adapter, thinks like these would be great! (If i could do a feedback : sometimes the eletro song in the background is distracting )
@JosephMcBrayer
@JosephMcBrayer Год назад
Thanks. Glad it was helpful. Focusing is smooth and is a good throw distance. Felt a little longer at times so a follow focus could be helpful depending on your preference. Gimbal balancing feels possible on the rs2 and I’ll give it a try later one-it’ll be heavy but feels possible. The gold flare is nice and I suppose the matte box might cut out some of it which could be helpful at some times if you want less flare. It seems to accentuate the flares of the Helios lens perhaps a bit too much in bright light. (And thanks for the music feedback-appreciate it) I’m working on a Bmpcc 6k pro video with it using a sigma 35mm f/1.4 so I’ll Adam some of these thoughts there as well. Appreciate interacting with you here and on IG!

@@JosephMcBrayer Awesome to know that Joseph, thank you! and Yeah if you could give a try on the rs2 would be good to know since anamorphics don’t go well with IBIS right? did you turn off the ibis/active stabilization of the R6?
@JosephMcBrayer
@JosephMcBrayer Год назад
@@TheGuigotz I’ll try out this configuration on an rs2 and see. Should balance with some adjusting. I had the camera ibis on but not the digital IS and didn’t notice any issues. 🤷

Hi Joseph, have you tried using filters on the adapter? Thinking about if it vignettes with filters
@JosephMcBrayer
@JosephMcBrayer Год назад
I used a variable neutral density filter on the front - - the one from Polar Pro - - and had no issues with vignetting there. The Helios lens is a 58 mm which is not quite at the widest recommended 50 mm with the lens adapter.
@daniellove162
@daniellove162 Год назад
If you buy a step up ring and filters bigger than your lens you find vignetting not an issue 24mm or wider.
@JosephMcBrayer
@JosephMcBrayer Год назад
@@daniellove162 Thanks for this tip -- I think he is meaning that the 82mm front element of the lens adapter is already at the end of the 'taking' lens and so the question of adding additional filters/matte boxes/nd's is a real concern. I use step up rings for a lot of my filters (82mm on a 58mm lens) and so that could work to get something larger than an 82mm filter size, but that's going to get pricey very quickly as 82mm is a standard size on the larger end. I'm not yet tried matte box with the 4" x 5.5" nd's but that may be a work around (each 4"x5.5" nd filter is upwards of $200usd so that's expensive for sure). A polar pro matte box kit might work around that, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I hope that's helpful--thanks for watching and for the comment helps here.

Thanks for your feedback-I’m assuming you mean the sharpness at center frame? It is filmed on a vintage 1960’s Helios 44-2 with an anamorphic adapter so razor sharpness is not really the goal, but rather character and a specific kind of look. I’ll be doing some tests with the adapter on other lenses that will start from a ‘sharper’ perspective (sigma art series 35mm and others).
